I canāt even picture it, actually- like how the flakes would even remotely resemble mashed potatoes at the end of the process. š I donāt feel like I am a snob about much but apparently my line is boxed mashed potatoes!

I checked other.....I buy premade Bob Evans mashed potatoes. I'll allow this. Those are real potatoes and I've brought them to a work potluck, they're actually really good.

This is what I use That's the one I have as well. My handle is wood, though...so I don't put it in the dishwasher.

+1. I have never had mashed potatoes from a box. If you follow the measurements on the box instead of "wing it", mix gently with a fork, don't whip them around just stir enough to not leave big noticeable lumps of dried flakes, then let them sit unstirred for a few minutes you get mashed potatoes! People get in trouble by trying to stir them with a lot of gusto so end up with gummy mashed potatoes... just like real ones! Or use too much milk/water. If you like to add cream or milk to your home mashed potatoes you have to account for that when measuring the flakes. You can't easily add it "after they are mashed"

Whichever method you choose, you just don't want to overwork them. They'll end up gummy. My favorite potato masher broke a few years back. It was circle shaped with a grid pattern. I loved it but couldn't find another to replace it, so I ended up with a wavy design. It doesn't work as well. I get lumps. I think it would be worth it to try the ricer. That is the kind I have, circle shape with a grid pattern. I better guard it if they are hard to find! I don't have a ricer or immersion blender or kitchen aid. So I mash them by hand. I have the Tupperware masher and it has a circle pattern, really fluffs up the potatoes. Same, it's such a disappointment. Like when our Thanksgiving potluck at work consists of someone signing up to bring mashed potatoes and gravy and it's instant mashed potatoes and a jar of gravy. No, just no. I've heard of mashed potatoes and powdered gravy but I have never heard of a jar of gravy I can't imagine what any of those things would taste like. Canada doesn't have many varieties of jars of gravy. More of an American thing. The Heinz jarred gravy isn't too bad. I use the powdered Swiss Chalet chicken gravy and will use a can of Franco American beef gravy. The Loblaws chain carries both of these. The Franco American chicken gravy is pasty yellow. Much cheaper than cream of chicken soup and will use as a substitute for the cream soup.

I'm old school---I use a masher. I also don't have an issue with some small lumps in mashed potatoes and I actually prefer that to them being blended to the point of not holding their shape on a plate any longer.

Same, it's such a disappointment. Like when our Thanksgiving potluck at work consists of someone signing up to bring mashed potatoes and gravy and it's instant mashed potatoes and a jar of gravy. No, just no. One year I went to my dad's house and his wife made everything I like only THE WRONG WAY and I had to pretend to be happy and it was so wrong. Lolol Ever since then I have done my own meal and never go to anyone else's house ever and will sign up extra for work to get out of any invitations š Creamed corn instead of frozen, instant mashed potatoes, lemon creme pie instead of lemon meringue, some pumpkin pie with a twist that was no bueno, a dish of cooked cranberries instead of jellied canned, plain old yams not mashed and topped with marshmallows, Hawaiian rolls instead of crescent, green bean casserole made with fresh green beans and actual onions instead of canned beans and french fried onions, the list of insults to my palate was long. The crowning awful touch was that disgusting Midwestern staple "7 layer salad" with like peas and cheese and mayonnaise, etc. I am very highly particular about my Thanksgiving meal, and I am unforgiving. This was at least 28 years ago and I've never gotten over it. š¤£ That would have been so incredibly disappointing. I'm not a big fan of most traditional Thanksgiving foods. Just give me turkey, real mashed potatoes and real gravy and I'm happy as can be.

My mom made all the traditional recipes in the traditional ways, just the way things ought to be. His sister is a vegetarian (just because she doesnāt like it, not for any animal lover reasonsāand her DH and kids are not). She would always insist on being the host but would not allow a turkey to be cooked in her house because she ādidnāt want to smell that cooked meat smell all night.ā So we would always end up having to cook it at our house and drive this boiling hot steaming 20 lb bird in the car for a 20-30 minute drive if we wanted to eat turkey on Thanksgiving. We finally pulled the plug on going to her house for any holiday years ago and couldnāt be happier to stay home and make our own food exactly the way we like it!

hand held potato masher, the wavy kind. I don't like my mashed potatoes too smooth, especially the whipped ones made with a mixer. And instant - ICK!!
I will admit to using powdered gravy packets though (just add water), but won't even try the kind from a jar

My first year for Thanksgiving away from my family my mom they sent me with a couple of shells of Coquille St Jacques because they knew it would be hard for me. They had no idea. Plain white rice instead of mashed potatoes. Add in no stuffing/dressing, dried turkey and plain green beans I thought the world had ended. Love my in-laws, but no. Just no.

I chose "other" because my preferred method of making mashed potatoes is to open the packet of dehydrated potatoes and mix them with boiling water. Instant potatoes are an abomination.

We like them whipped and fluffy so it is the Kitchen Aid mixer. Dh makes them. Traditional: just potatoes, salt, pepper, butter and milk.
