Ok, so i decided I'm not spending $28 for a box of WS peppermint bark, as good as it may be. I have found a knockoff recipe and will be making my own. But where do i buy "food grade peppermint oil"? My largest grocery store that has "everything under the sun" does not have it. Where can I buy it, or do i need to order online? Thanks in advance!

I found it at Michael's. You don't need much of the stuff to get the flavor.

Years ago, my mom bought it at the drugstore.

I made peppermint popcorn last year for my neighbors and found peppermint oil at both Michael's and Joann.

If you can't find it, is it possible to substitute peppermint extract?

If you can't find it, is it possible to substitute peppermint extract? This is what I use in my marshmallows.

We get it at hobby lobby. It is LorAnne brand. We use it to make hard candy every Christmas.

If you can't find it, is it possible to substitute peppermint extract? There were many reviews written up on the recipe I found, and they all said use Peppermint oil, not extract, that they came out much better.

What is the difference between the oil and the extract? Curious minds or at least my mind would like to know Peppermint oil is pure, concentrated oil and peppermint extract is a peppermint flavored alcohol. I've picked up peppermint oil in natural product grocery stores - never thought of checking Michaels.

LorAnn is the brand that many candy and cake shops sell and it is also available to Hobby Lobby (and probably Michaels/JoAnns). Peppermint is a popular flavor so it should be easy to find at one of those sources. Just make sure that any brand that you get is oil based with no water so that it is chocolate friendly.
Share the recipe if you get a chance!

Thanks for the explanation. I have several recipes and have never used anything, but the extract. I have always had good results and gotten complements. Extracts are fine in a lot of recipes but they won't work for chocolate because they have water as an ingedient. That's why the recipe calls for an oil. Same goes for food coloring. You have to be really careful not to use a colorant with water. Some "candy" colors still have water because they mean candy other than chocolate.
