I've never posted an NSBR thread, I don't think, here, so--hi!
We are a-ok following mask mandates, etc. My husband and I both work in schools, and have been out in this for over a year now, well before vaccines were available. I work with students who cannot mask or distance, and while I completely understand why people don't like wearing masks (I have asthma and anxiety disorder, and I frequently work with kids on speech and articulation goals), they have been my constant companion.
My kids have both had their vaccine, the 2nd shot will officially kick in for them on the 18th.
A judge in MO ruled mask mandates were unconstitutional--or something--I am not fully up on it because I just don't have the bandwidth right now, so I have been willfully ignoring it all, but now it's on our doorstep and I feel like I need to do something or have an opinion or something... The judge made his ruling in a county--I am sure it is being appealed--but then our state attorney general sent letters to the schools telling them their mandates were illegal and now anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers are pressuring schools to drop their mask mandates.
Can they not just WAIT?? Probably most of the districts, especially ours as it is pretty rural, are going to drop them after Christmas once kids have had a chance to be vaccinated if that is what their family wants to do.
So can they just CHILL??? No, instead, they have been sending their kids to school and telling them to refuse to wear a mask. And anti-masking parents had a near riot outside an elementary--ELEMENTARY--school in our district today and are riling everyone up to have a HUGE PROTEST at central office tomorrow.
We have one more week 'til break, people, come on. Please don't make even more problems for schools than they are currently already dealing with. Do you seriously not have anything better to do??? There were rants online about the protest that devolved into anti-maskers claiming our kids are being groomed to see porn in schools via the mask mandates.
Politely, but w.t.h.
So I'm venting, but if you can be rational, feel free to discuss. My husband wants to discuss keeping the kids home tomorrow. And FWIW, our kids want to wear their masks until their vaccine kicks in, and then my son is ready to stop (he is 10). My daughter (8) is not necessarily ready to stop. I have told them both that we expect them to a) as long as it is a rule at school and b) even if it's not until their vaccine kicks in at least, but they can continue wearing them as long as they want to.

I’m sorry. I’m just across the state line in Kansas. Our high school just dropped mask requirement.
I don’t get the MO attorney general. He’s awful imo. I took our KS attorney general is trying to be just like him. 🙄 Can they just leave public health to the experts- which he/they are not!

Ugh, we have some of those parents here too. Many of them don’t want anyone’s kids to wear masks. 🙄

My husband's former district began this school year without masks, but quickly reversed course when their numbers grew out of control. Honestly, I am not positive I am ready for my kids to be done with them. We are just kind of waiting and seeing at this point, but I feel like it's coming. If the vaccines are effective against omicron, if the deadliness of covid goes the way it did for influenza, then, sure.

I'm in Florida - there are NO mask mandates and schools are forbidden to have them. My teenager masks in school (and any other time she's not at home - she's fully vaccinated) and has been told by classmates that masks are useless, masks will make her sick, and she's a sheep for wearing one. She's also had classmates deliberately cough on her. I really don't see how someone wearing a mask is such a threat to those who aren't. Unsurprisingly - the classmate who has been the worst offender...was out with Covid recently.
Dh and I are fully vaccinated and I'm boostered - we're still wearing masks away from home. Unfortunately almost no one else is (and based on our vaccination rates here (40%) - and the signs requesting that unvaccinated customers wear masks - we should see a lot more masks than we do.)

Okay, I’m in MO and have been upset all day. Our Attorney General, Eric Schmidt, is running for a Senate seat but claims that he is fighting for Missouri’s 6 million people. No, he’s fighting for a Republican Senate seat but claims that it is all political is “inaccurate information”. It’s kind of obvious! He is suing everyone and their mother over masking. What a waste of money! Last night on the news they said that he sent a letter to parents asking them to snitch on the schools who are ignoring his mandate. He went so far as to ask for pictures in horizontal mode and make sure the lighting is good! He says there will be repercussions for the schools who defy this….like school administrators and teachers don’t have enough to deal with. Our Covid numbers are climbing and 1,000 a day are dying. I quite frankly don’t understand how he lives himself.
OP, my daughter is also a teacher. She teaches deaf kids who all have other health issues which makes masking hard but they all do it so I totally understand where you are coming from. Why this can’t wait is beyond me.

This. It is the parents, not the children by and large, that have a problem with masks. Our school district has a mask mandate that isn’t changing any time soon, even though we have some of those parents too. I have been subbing this year and been in a variety of schools and classrooms. The kids all treat wearing masks like a way of life and will quickly ask for a new one if their mask breaks. They honestly don’t have a problem with them.

I hear the same thing from my teacher friends. The kids are totally fine with their masks. Most of the elementary schools here are having lots of outdoor time where they can take their masks off for a break.

Welcome to the NSBR board! You are completely right in that they should not protest masks at all and certainly not with only 1 week left in this term. Better to see how things are going after the new year. Cases are rising across the country and it will likely get worse after Christmas. By then, we will know more about Omicron and we will also have had more time for people to get their boosters.
Sadly the boosters will only do so much because they are protecting those of us who were smart enough to get vaccinated early on. The latecomers will still be waiting on their 6 months to pass, children unfortunately aren't eligible for a booster - more reason to keep them wearing masks until we know more about Omicron and with Delta surging - and so many people still haven't had even their first dose. Our county is at 42% fully vaccinated so I sympathize with being in the company of brainwashed people.

I’m sorry. I’m just across the state line in Kansas. Our high school just dropped mask requirement. I was surprised when the School Board in our area (also KS) came back and said they'd let HS be optional right after Thanksgiving. Then I look at the CV Dashboard and the numbers are almost the highest they've been all year. I finally deleted FB because the SD updates were being swarmed with the anti-maskers / people pissed their SB nominee lost after ALL the votes were in. It seems to be the same people shouting about no masks / no vaxxes / burn books / no CRT and it's absolutely freaking ridiculous.

I work in an elementary school in a 3-5 year old classroom and the kids have no problems wearing masks. They are all so compliant and good natured about it, and there have only been 4 or 5 kids out this year (in the entire school) with covid and all were isolated cases. Masking is clearly working here
I am sorry for everyone dealing with protesting parents, it is just so frustrating that something as simple as wearing a mask is such a big deal to them.

Imagine if these parents put that time and energy into their children’s actual education.
At a district near me the protests are being organized by people who don’t even have kids.
People never cease to amaze me about this. It’s a health issue.

I have an elementary school bus stop right outside my door. The kids all wear their masks, from kindergarten up. They seem to be fine with it.
I know a 13 yr old who removes his mask all the time, but his mother also only wears her mask if mandated.
