I've been making my Christmas cards in double quick time this year - a bit slow to begin but I'd really got the bit between my teeth as I used a Pentel Dual Metallic pen in my Silhouette machine to "draw" a design on each card. I can't tell you how irritated I was then, when the pen "ran out" with half a barrel of ink still there visible in the case. I sulked a bit before going on FB and sending a message to Pentel expressing my frustration. Kudos to them, I got an almost instant reply with a few questions about the pen, in particular how long had I had it - "because they have a shelf life of 3 years", the first time I've ever heard such a thing expressed like that, though of course, we all know that our art materials don't last forever from our own experience.
I returned a couple of the pens to them (they sent a freepost address) and this morning had a bundle of four replacements - very generous. But it's got me thinking about how long some of these materials are in store before I buy them...and then how long it is before I use them. The old white pen saga springs to mind - I followed that thread a while back about getting white pens going again and went through the various methods with limited success. When I think about it though, we've had almost two years Covid time and it's at least as long as that since I last stepped inside a store to buy white pens - no wonder they're not all performing beautifully!
I think I'm going to start and write a date on some of my art materials - particularly those which have a habit of giving up on me. Whilst I'm at it though, I'm going to give a shout out to those little bottles of Stickles which came out in my Christmas box for the ?th year running and are still working beautifully!!
What are the heroes in your stash which keep going year on year - and what gives out before it's really finished?
