… you know the rest.
Dang, South Dakota. Making teachers scramble on the ice for $1 bills to use in their classrooms instead of properly funding them. Let’s see those commie CRT lovers out there on their knees fighting each other for money to teach OUR kids.
Texas is really embarrassed they didn’t think of this first.

Gross.
I'm not surprised though.

Yes, let's demean and infantilize the profession even more! Add it to the list, which includes required lesson plan turn-in, paying to wear jeans on Fridays, and working the drive thru at McDonalds for "Education Night" after teaching a full day.

It isn’t the state doing this, right? It’s something the hockey team is sponsoring? I think it would be very different if it was a government entity. Every year, the local mall holds a small competition for elementary school principals within the district. I think it’s something like a scavenger hunt through the mall, and the principals can partner with a couple of teachers. Kids were welcomed to go to the mall and cheer on their principal. I don’t think anyone saw this as demeaning.
ETA: I had no idea the teachers had to literally scramble for cash and stuff it in their clothing over an ice rink. I changed my mind. That is demeaning.

Thank you. It is demeaning. And while no, the state isn't sponsoring it, if the state was properly funding its schools, no one would consider having teachers do this.

That's really dehumanizing for one of our most important professions. Medical care and education should be at the forefront of our country and sadly they are both on the back burner.

I'd like to see the state legislators who chronically underfund our schools out there scrambling to get their salary. Because that's what those teachers are really doing - recouping some of the salary money they've already spent on their classrooms.

My town would have a saw dust pile fulled with change and kids could crawl around in it searching for change. I wouldn't let my kids do it because I thought it was demeaning and filthy. This is so much worse. I go to college hockey games and they always have games where you can win things between periods, but I've never seen anything like this. I had a principal that would pressure us to work at McDonalds for an evening during the school week. Hard pass.

This is sad. Teachers shouldn't have to risk injury to get money for their classrooms.

I think all those cheap legislators should try to teach a 1st grade class with kids who have challenges for a week, then teach a bunch of high school freshman for a week.. then see where the funding would be...

This is sad. Teachers shouldn't have to risk injury to get money for their classrooms. Teachers shouldn't have to do anything other than their jobs to get the money necessary for them to do their jobs. We shouldn't have to give up evenings and weekends to make appearances/work at PTO events to raise money for school. How about our state legislators, governor, and state board of ed show up at those things. Did anyone ever ask a general to sit in a dunking booth or have slime poured over her head to raise money for more guns and ammunition? My principal has had to do those things as part of PTO fundraisers. We're supposed to be good sports and it's "for the kids," but enough is enough. I'm done giving up my free time and some dignity so our state can brag about no state income tax, or continue giving big tax breaks to corporations and churches. Time for people to pay up.

This is sad. Teachers shouldn't have to risk injury to get money for their classrooms. Teachers shouldn't have to do anything other than their jobs to get the money necessary for them to do their jobs. Of course not. That goes without saying. I was simply commenting on the event in the op. Me not commenting further does not mean I object only to teachers being asked to engage in such foolish or injurious antics to earn funds for the benefit of their students. I am firmly opposed to the idea that teachers should have to contribute their own funds or time beyond the classroom. Teaching is one of the toughest, most under-appreciated, and under-paid careers. I know I wouldnʻt want to do it. I always do what I can to help my childrensʻ teachers, whether it be donating supplies, books, or time to chaperone on field trips. I have also served on the PTSO multiple times to help with school events. Teachers spend so much time with our children, and I think itʻs important that we provide them with any support we can. They should not ever have to be burdened with the financial responsibilities tied to supplying classrooms and teaching our children.

"The Sioux Falls Stampede, a local hockey team, hosted the inaugural “Dash for Cash,” and the money was donated by CU Mortgage Direct, a Sioux Falls lender. The event was billed as an opportunity for teachers to gather money for their classroom needs, KELO reported. Schools had to apply for the competition, and teachers had to explain how they would use the money they won, Stampede President Jim Olander told the station. “Every teacher has a different reason,” Olander said. For some teachers, “it’s iPads for the classroom,” while for others “it’s just new equipment.” As far as the competition: “Put it in their shirt, pants, wherever,” Olander told the news station. “They can take as much money as they can grab during the time that we have during the intermission.” The teachers’ schools also received $5 for every ticket they sold to the game. “ The teachers in this area, and any teacher, they deserve whatever the heck they get,” Ryan Knudson, the director of business development and marketing for CU Mortgage Direct, told the Argus Leader." www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/12/13/south-dakota-teachers-dash-for-cash-on-hockey-rink/rewrite: The teachers in this area, and any teacher, they DESERVE whatever the heck they crawl around on their hands and knees for while making a public spectacle of themselves for the enjoyment of the rubes - and clearly DESERVE not a penny more."

Yes, let me please see legislators on their knees trying to stuff enough money to pay for military munitions.
Or police officers wanting to fund their ammunition.
Maybe the president filling the tanks of Air Force one?
What? I went too far? Please explain to me how.

If teachers deserve/need more money and the hockey team wants to provide it, then why not just award it to them? Outright no groveling?

If teachers deserve/need more money and the hockey team wants to provide it, then why not just award it to them? Outright no groveling? Because they're not interested in helping public educators as much as they are the social media clicks they got from this. (I'm not blaming players; this is their management/PR team.)
