Things are so bad here in Minnesota with the Delta variant that I don't think people are worried about Omicron. This is the full page ad in our local papers, begging people to do the right thing to prevent further pressure on our healthcare system: link

gar The Omicron cases are doubling in the UK every 2.5 days, right? That is one heck of a quick exponential growth and it's clear Omicron will be dominant in the entire Western world in the next few weeks.

It’s hugely more transmissible thanDelta it seems. Someone (scientist?) said it’ll be hard to avoid getting this one 😕

Let's see! It's not a given but I'm interested in seeing the 4th booster shot vs Omicron data when they become available.

I hope you guys are ready for what’s coming - the infection numbers we are predicted to see in the coming days are set to be staggering. There is no certainty yet that the infection will be any milder and re-infection is happening.
We will be ‘breaking records’ in a way no one wants with numbers doubling in less than 48 hours in some areas. .
So, brace yourselves I’d say 😔

We are recording the highest numbers since the entire pandemic began. We're in the ridiculous situation where you can't go to work (you have to work from home if at all possible) but you can go to the work Christmas party. Boris won't ban parties or Christmas because of the government's stupidity last Christmas with office parties left, right and centre it seems, and because it won't be popular but they're asking us to consider very carefully who we socialise with, where we go and what we do. Frankly though, this was never going to be contained - it's way too transmissible - so I don't feel like we can do any more than limit our own interactions and hold our breathe at this point

I’m so sorry, that sounds completely bonkers. ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/confused.jpg.gif) That sounds stressful but also like the most practical approach. And, on the upside, you can still interact here. I’m still hoping against hope the early indications bear out and Omicron proves less severe.🤞

Ditto what gar said. The transmissibility of the Omicron is like no other of the variants to date. It's too soon to say for certain how it will affect hospitalization or deaths as there's always a time lag between infection > serious symptoms > hospitalizations >deaths and the data isn't complete yet because it hasn't been around long enough. But it's better to be prepared before it gets to that stage. Because of the number of test that we carry out in the UK both Lateral flow tests and PCR tests in addition to the high number of sequencing we do, we are in a position to monitor the numbers far more closely than other countries that may not test or sequence in such high numbers. What is true is that any country that has the variant there already had better be prepared for a rapid rise in the number of infections. What the scientist do already know, with the scientific data they do have, is that the booster will give us all another level of protection - no guarantee that someone, vaccinated with two doses or not, will not be infected but hopefully with less serious consequences if one does. So PLEASE, if you haven't received your boosters please do so as soon as possible and limit your interactions with people you don't know and avoid crowds, wash your hands and wear a face mask.

We're having Christmas next July. Are the Covid passports now showing boosters/3rd jabs? They weren't last time I looked, but that was a while ago. Not that I'm going anywhere to need it...

According to the Boston Globe, a new study from researchers in Hong Kong found that Omicron spreads around 70 times faster than Delta or the original COVID-19 strain. It looks like it's going to be another tough winter.

I have a relative in South Africa who had regular covid earlier in the year, and is now recovering from omicron. He has been much, much sicker this time (two vaccines but no booster, I think).
I never really stopped shielding, I suppose. No pubs, no parties, no shopping, no crowds. If I can see my mum and my sister for Christmas I’ll cope. I spent seven hours in chemo yesterday and I’m not allowed anyone with me. I’m so fed up with the whole thing.

DH had his much earlier than me as he's older, end of September. His showed up pretty quick so did my mum's and she had it very much at the beginning of them starting. I think it depends how quick the centres upload their data to wherever they upload it to. I screen shot mine if I'm going anywhere so I access it from my photo gallery as it's such a faff to get into the app, in our case, outside the theatre. I had no signal the first time we went but fortunately I did have my little card so they accepted that.

I'm sorry he was poorly and hope he's in the minority. It does seem that the booster is critical. It's horrible that people have to be in hospital alone, even if we understand the reason

Canada has put out a travel advisory for international travel. And some provinces are recommending no domestic travel between provinces. More restrictions could be put in place.

This variant must be extra-super contagious... it was first detected in the US on December 1st and is already in 30+ states in 16 days? I am kind of annoyed that my 8-year-old has only just recently been allowed to get the vaccine (he has had one dose, the second is next week) and it almost seems like there's no point... I need my booster but so far have not been able to find an appointment. I had one scheduled, but they canceled it and told me to reschedule...yay. Covid, the gift that never ends

I hope this updated information makes those that wanted large indoor Christmas gatherings with people traveling from around the country (US and elsewhere) change their plans.
Please—be smart.

The only 'social' events I've attended this year were the funeral of our brother in law, and a pub meal with DH in the empty garden room 2 weeks ago, when the motorway was closed by an accident and we couldn't get home. Chemo alone, necessary face-to-face appointments alone, all medical appointments by phone unless I needed to have stuff physically put into me or taken out of me. It's rubbish, isn't it? My BFF's brother and his family live in South Africa and they say there are no precautions, no restrictions, no pressure to vaccinate even if they are available, and people just catch it and either recover or don't.

We've just had our first Omicron case announced here in New Zealand - a traveller from Germany who is in a MIQ facility in Christchurch. All the passengers on the same plane and the aircrew are of course now close contacts. Just like with Delta it's only a matter of time until something gets into the community.
Unfortunately I can't have my booster til the end of February. We are rolling out vaccinations to 5-11 years old though, starting in January. And NZ just hit 90% of the eligible population (12+) fully vaccinated. In Auckland it's 94%.
