I know Covid is unfortunately political and a lot of factors play in to what state you live in. I live in TX and we basically never shut down. Our kids returned to school in the Fall of 2020 and we haven’t had any mask mandates. My family is from Florida so I also spend as much time there as I can. Aside from a few months in early 2020, Florida has been business as usual.
Most people I know are vaxxed. Very few wear masks and we are back to living our lives for the most part. I really don’t give Covid too much thought or worry about it until I am on here. So many are terrified and missing out on life. I know a lot of people are immuno compromised and have to watch out for other family members (and I get that) but for those of you that are fully vaxxed and can wear a mask, I guess I don’t understand why people are so hesitant to get back to normal. In my opinion, some form of Covid is here to stay and we can’t stay locked up forever.
I do understand that a lot of it depends on where you live and your local government. My elderly parents are in Florida and at first I was pissed that DeSantis wasn’t doing anything. But now I kind of get it and am also glad how our government in TX handled everything.
My husbands family is in CA and they have been terrified this whole time. Their kids never went back to school last year and many are still working from home. They think we are crazy for living our lives and not being terrified. I decided awhile back that my mental health was suffering and I needed to resume my normal activities (once I was fully vaxxed).
I am just wondering if I am in the minority or if others feel the same way. Ultimately, I feel like everyone has to do what’s best for them but I refuse to live in fear any longer.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from others who live in TX and FL.

I'm in rural Colorado. I've had both shots and the booster. I also teach in a district that had masks last year, but not this one.
I pretty much live my life as it was before while following local mask mandates.
For many it is a fear of reentry. Each new thing you try again chips a little away. Since I an around hundreds of students daily and I would guess most unvaccinated, there is little outside of work that would give me the same level of exposure

I read some of the posts on here and it is literally like I’m reading about an alien world or an alternate universe.
I don’t think about Covid. Most days I forget it’s even a thing. I don’t carry a mask with me. I haven’t needed to prove vax for anything and I go places all the time - restaurants, we saw Hamilton a few weeks ago, The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol, big concerts at arenas.
It doesn’t occur to me to think twice about gatherings. We have our big, extended family Christmas party tomorrow with 40+ people. I have no idea who’s vaxed and who’s not. We’d never ask each other that.

Before I was vaccinated, I was terrified. I did isolate as a fairly healthy (albeit overweight) person. After vaccination, I was less terrified. Although I still to this day mask up in public, I am not worried for myself. I’m boosted and I’ve already had Covid (a mild case, thanks to my vaccine). I teach every day. I go about my normal life (although still do not go to large indoor gatherings with unmasked strangers). I have been worried about passing it on to my immunocompromised brother.
Now we have Omicron. It is NOT milder, despite media reports. If you are unvaccinated or immunocompromised, you CAN get severely sick or die, just like with alpha and delta. And it is CRAZY contagious. I fully expect that most of us WILL get it. If you’re boosted, you’ll most likely just have a flu-like case. But our hospitals will be overwhelmed like never before, and I’m not interested in making their jobs harder by being careless and spreading it, even if I am asymptomatic or have a mild case.

I'm not in TX or FL but in GA with the same scenario. I haven't stayed home for any of this except when things were shut down initially. I go to work and deal with Covid every day so for me, it's not something terrifying.
I have seen many many people die from it but I've also seen many people die from heart disease, etc. To me personally it's no longer scary like it was in Nov/Dec 2019 and we knew it was in China and only a question of time.
I too hate that it's become so politicized but it is true that most people who are "terrified" are liberals, and this board is very liberal. They feel that it's because they're so much smarter and more educated than conservatives (again that is reflected here by some, and by many of my more liberal friends. While it may be true, it's also condescending and annoying and why some people dislike liberals).
I'm fairly liberal but I'm also realistic about it all. We can't just wait it out, it's mutating constantly. Get vaxed, wear an N95, whatever you need to do but it's not going away.

My in laws are in Florida a little more than half the year. I won’t visit. They come here.
I am vaccinated and boosted, as are my husband and adult child. My minor kids are now all vaxxed. Until they were, I was being cautious because they were not. I am also mindful that my parents (vaxxed and boosted) are 77 and 90, and that my husband has a heart condition.
I split my time right now between San Francisco and Seattle, where I live. Both cities require vaccination for indoor dining/bars/gyms/museums, and both require masks for indoor everything else (grocery shopping, retail stores). Our states also both require vaccinations for university students, staff, and professors (I am a professor). I have been living life pretty normally *because of those conditions* in many ways—I meet friends to eat or drink, I go to museums, I go to the gym.
If I lived in a place that did not have mask and vaccine requirements, I would behave much less “normally”. You could not pay me, no offense, to travel to Texas or Florida right now, as Omicron drives up numbers without an appreciable public health response.

Healthcare workers don’t have the luxury of not living in fear. We deal with the repercussions of everyone pretending a global pandemic is just the flu and here to stay. The things I’m missing out on-working a fully staffed shift (because there is always someone out sick with COVID), not having pressure ulcers on my ears (we ran out of the food N95s so the one that fits my face is weird on my ears and causes skin breakdown), getting all my work finished in my shift because there are so many extra COVID related tasks, including the time it takes to don and doff all the PPE. I miss the days when I could go a day without swabbing someone’s nose, I miss not worrying that my patients would have long term lung damage, I miss being able to discharge patients ready for dc to nursing homes that aren’t closed due to the pandemic. I’m missing out on sending patients to specialists because when we have any COVID positive patients, other facilities are cautious and won’t expose their staff. Lots of stuff I’m missing out on. And I really miss the days when I didn’t know how many of my fellow Americans are willfully ignorant so long as they aren’t inconvenienced and like to act like acknowledging a global fucking pandemic is somehow living in fear. And yeah I’m afraid. Afraid the healthcare system is about to be overwhelmed and people won’t be able to get the care they need.

I saw a study awhile back comparing FL and CA and how their response to Covid was completely different. Even though CA shut down, kept kids out of school and had mask mandates, Florida fared better in the end. I’ll try to find a link.

I'm in Florida and higher risk. I'm vaccinated and boosted. I've been masking since March 2020 and will continue to do for the foreseeable future. I homeschooled my youngest last year but sent her back to school this year - she's vaccinated and wears a mask despite the bullying from her classmates.
We're living our lives but we're doing so with an understanding that there is a global pandemic and only about 40% of my neighbours are vaccinated and even less are masking. I did my Christmas shopping online and in a neighbouring county where vaccination rates are MUCH higher and most people are still masking. We're not socialising with people in person exccept for outside, we're not eating IN restaurants (we did briefly and then delta came along), we're not doing any unneccessary travel. DS is coming to visit for Christmas - he's fully vaccinated and regularly tested for work.
I think it's possible to live our lives without needlessly risking lives and overburdening hospitals.

Well, my governor has called up 1000 National Guard to help with staffing shortage in the NE Ohio region-which is where I live. The highest incidences are in Cleveland’s and Akron-Canton, but my county has seen a big uptick in cases too.
The school system that I retired from had to go virtual until after Christmas because there were so many food service absences-and it’s a very high poverty district- that they had no way of feeding the kids. My friends who are still working were upset because they had activities and gifts for the kids. The kids were upset too. It’s just terrible.
So around here, Covid is bad. A lot of people are carrying on with life. But I’m 66, and not feeling especially lucky, so I am being very careful. Limited contact and yes, masking for me. My friends are doing the same. BUT I will be spending Christmas with my fully vaxed family.

Why the hell would anyone share that information?
No.
I have literally never asked anyone that (and never will) and have never been asked. I don’t publicly post anything about my feelings on the vaccine. I don’t publicly post my feelings on mandates. If someone did ask me, I would not answer.

Stop claiming it’s possible to do both.

I guess the disconnect for me is the assumption that you or someone you love is not going to be the one who gets really, really sick or even dies. And the things we need to do to prevent that are so minor to me (IMO) that I struggle to understand why and how it's all become so politicized. Like... just put the damn mask on your face when you are in a place where you're likely to breathe your droplets on someone else. Do you wear underwear? Do you wear socks? Grow up and wear the mask. Get the shot like you got umpteen other shots before and then go on with your freaking mundane life.
Anyway, I had a brief spell when I was boosted and there was no vaccine dodging variant where I went about life like Covid wasn't a thing. Traveled, socialized, dared to go maskless in crowded spaces. But I have elderly parents who I'd like to spend time with as much as possible. And I have kids who work with much younger children who still can't be vaccinated. And I have a husband whose illness or quarantine would end up inconveniencing hundreds of other people. So it seems to me that the socially responsible thing to do and the behavior that most benefits the people that I love is to continue to take seriously a disease that has killed 800,000 Americans (and 5.3 million people worldwide) in under 2 years. That's not meant to be sanctimonious or condescending. I just truly don't understand what is actually gained by NOT wearing a mask or not considering the best ways to mitigate risk.

It's being aware that we are living through a global pandemic and unless people vaccinate and test and quit spreading Covid around, we're going to continue to be in a pandemic and new variants are going to continue to evolve - and there's no guarantee that the next one won't be more deadly. During a bad flu season - I ALSO stay away from crowded places, avoid hugging/handshakes, and stay home if I'm unwell or someone in the household is. I don't see why doing the same plus a mask is living in fear

I’m in a very small town in KY. I am not vaxxed due to other health issues. I had Covid in Sept, fairly rough case, but not hospitalized.
Most people here are pretty much back to normal. Most have vacationed, traveled to see family. Very few wear masks. Right now we have around 50 cases in my county of close to 18,000 population.
I usually do not mask, but I distance myself from people and use sanitizer. I’m more concerned with my mental health. I cannot live in fear and stay at home all the time.

Well, I live in Michigan and Covid is rampant here. Our hospitals can’t keep up. We have new cases of Covid at the school I work at daily. I really can’t stand wearing a mask, but our county has mandated them at schools, and I think that our Covid numbers would be worse if we didn’t wear them. We rarely eat dinner in a restaurant still. It’s a shit show still.

The unvaxxed maybe even more than the vaxxed. And I'm close enough with the people with whom I choose to socialize that it's part of regular conversation/knowledge. I had dinner out tonight with a friend. I know she is vaccinated, still got Covid after traveling last month, will get her booster next month. I know her husband was boosted yesterday and her daughters will be tomorrow. And yet this sharing of vaccine related information was probably .000001 per cent of the conversation we engaged in during dinner. This is simply information that friends share with each other in the course of regular friendship, especially after a period of social isolation caused by the illness in question. In my husband's workspace, vaccine status information was required to return to the workplace and the unvaxxed are required to wear masks inside the building so it's very obvious.

The self centered me me me on this thread is downright disgusting. Only it’s not. A lot of people live in areas that have not been as affected by Covid as others. A lot of people live in highly vaxxed areas. A lot of people suffer from depression and mental health issues. YOU have to decide what’s right for YOUR situation. Living in fear for years is not the answer for everyone. Edit: I’m talking about people that are fully vaxxed and mask up.

I'm a nurse and have lost so much respect for people who are either so ignorant or callous that they continue to put others, including their family, at risk for Covid. People who test positive but remove their masks when we leave the room (in an urgent care setting) or ask if they can just run a few errands before they quarantine. Or think their kids can still go to school or sports if they don't test them, because then parents can say they didn't know. People in stores just coughing and coughing into the air, gross any day but especially now. I've worked since day one of shutdown and never stopped. I go and do what I want. I travel, take airplanes, and walk the best beaches and endure crowded Disney. But I do it vaccinated, with a mask to protect myself and others.
If what you did had zero effect on me, my work, my family or my friends then I wouldn't care at all what you did. Most rational people aren't asking others to stop living their best life. But is it so hard to ask that you get vaccinated, wear a flipping mask in public settings or stay home if you're sick. Take a rapid test before a family gathering - not foolproof but it can help. You want to live without fear but then have others pick up the pieces when you are sick. Stay away from the urgent care, doctor's offices, and hospitals if you, when you, get sick with Covid. Those of us in health care are sick of caring for you. Stay home and take your ivermectin with a chaser of chlorox.

I live in Tx and it sucks. People are so cavalier with other people’s safety that wearing a mask and getting vaccinated are treated as if you’re being asked to give up everything. I’m not “ living in fear”, I’m living in reality. I need hospitals for treatment to stay alive. If I get COVID I’m very, very likely to die. I get that a huge swath of the people in my state feel that I should just never leave the house because they are entitled to not be inconvenienced and it sucks to be me. It’s been a real eye opener and not in a good way. 800,000 feels like a big number to me but I guess I’m just sensitive.

We have indoor mask mandates here and have to show the vaccination "passport" to get into restaurants, sports venues, etc. etc. I can get my booster on wednesday and will go that day after work for it. I am still very cautious as I'm immuno compromised.

I am in Texas. I do NOT approve of the way our state has handled the virus. I cannot understand how a governor who says he cares about citizens would file suit against schools who mandated masks.
DH and I are both elderly. He has many heath problems and both of feel certain he would die if he caught covid. We are vaxxed and boosted. We wear a mask everywhere. I have 3 in my purse at all times. We are almost going out--but not completely. We attend church along with about 50 others. We have eaten at a restaurant a few times. We do limited shopping. I have returned to my 2 volunteer jobs. Both situations do not involve being around people. I have not gone "window shopping" or shopping for new clothes. No movies yet for us.
My friends and I happily announced to one another when we were able to get vaccinated, that is how I know. Since covid times I have been to Maui and to Canada. Both trips involved so much stress with the testing etc. that I do not want to take an international trip again until covid is over.
