Is it in tonight? My kids have still never seen it even though I joke about them being the Sound of Music kids all the time.

I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I can’t stand this movie.

DH has commandeered the tv tonight so I'm not watching. I own the DVD so all is good. Going to see it at the movie theater just after it was released was my 8th birthday present - and I've been a big fan ever since.

I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I can’t stand this movie. I’m upstairs and my DH is downstairs watching TV. I got a text from him awhile ago, and I quote, “How come ‘The Sound of Music’ has become a Christmas movie. Crazy.” Obviously he is not a fan. LOL. I don’t hate it, but I have zero interest in watching it ever again.

“How come ‘The Sound of Music’ has become a Christmas movie. Crazy.” I don't like when the Christmas music radio station plays "My Favorite Things". And I don't consider it a Christmas movie either. There's a football game on right now too, but I don't consider it a Christmas football game!

Captain Von Trapp, hubba hubba! This is the one role that Christopher Plummer absolutely hated doing. I much prefer him playing King Lear on the stage. I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I can’t stand this movie. I can't stand the movie either but love the scenic background. I have traveled to where the movie was filmed, was in the church where the wedding was filmed and it is all beautiful. I watched this movie when I was 7 years old for the first time. I am done with this one.

I love that my teens will pick to watch Sound of Music during long car rides (much to my DH's chagrin).

why the song “My Favorite Things” is on Christmas play lists Apparently Julie Andrews sang it on national tv on a Christmas show, and it became associated with Christmas ever since. And if you listen to the lyrics, the song does mention packages wrapped with string, sleigh bells, and snowflakes.

Didn’t know it’s on tonight, but now I do. Thank you, peas!
(of course I have my own copy … but it’s more fun watching it with the rest of the world)

I know the lyrics Brown paper packages tied up with strings is not a reference to Christmas presents Sleighs and snowflakes are winter, but not Christmas

There’s literally no connection in Sound of Music to Christmas whatsoever.

If you google why is it considered a Christmas movie, this is the answer you see the most:
"Before DVDs and streaming services became the norm, the general population had to gather around a TV set at a specific hour in order to watch their favorite movies. Because families traditionally spend more time together during the holidays, networks would air family-friendly films in the lead-up to Christmas."
Do with it what you want. And with that, I bow out of this conversation! I've got a movie to watch.

I’m singing along. I’ve known all the songs since before the movie came out. My parents had the Broadway cast recording. On vinyl. That we played on the hi-fi.

I am on the bitter bus about this at the moment - I absolutely love this movie & dh would rather scratch his eyeballs out than have to watch it. So I didn't get to see it, although I could catch it on demand another time I know. But not the same! And yes I could have watched it on my own on another tv, but we try to watch tv together in the evenings.

I like some of the songs and parts of the movie but in general it is not a movie I will rewatch for more than a half hour or so at a time.
I agree it’s not a Christmas movie, but isn’t the Wizard of Oz shown around Christmas each year, too? Years ago I read these epic movies were shown annually during times when people were generally together and off work so they could be watched as a family.

I am ambivalent about the movie. I think I have only seen it a few times.
The family that babysat me when I was a kid (over 50 years ago 😬) had a bunch of records that had musical soundtracks and then album cover had pages with the story. The sound of music was one of them so we sang the songs and played and acted our kid’s version of the story a lot.
The Trapp Family Lodge at Stowe has a Von Trapp family history talk on their schedule (paid event but you don’t have to be staying at the lodge to attend) that I think would be fun to attend but just haven’t got around to yet.
