although I'm not really sure how I manged to derail this into a purging discussion! personally I don't see it as de-railing - it's a good reminder to all of us that we don't need ALL the things

I should put these on my list too. I used to emboss a fair bit, but I can't remember the last time I did, maybe once in 2020? I'm pretty sure I could just keep a couple of very favourite colours if I felt I really needed to hang on to them and wouldn't notice the rest had gone. I gave mine away when I gave up stamping years ago and then I rebought them several years later when I started again - totally not a big deal though! They're not terribly expensive. I bought them as I needed them: white, clear, and gold cover 90% of my needs, even as a cardmaker. I could use silver and maybe rose gold but I can live without them. If you have colored inks you can usually clear emboss over the top of them more successfully then using colored powders anyway (esp. black!) Yes, this! I have white, clear, gold and silver. I do have black but hardly ever use it. I use VeraFine Onyx Black and emboss in clear. If I want a "color" I use colored inks and re-stamp in VersaMark then emboss. Oh, and I do have the Lawn Fawn Glow in the Dark, which I use from time to time. It makes me smile every time it glows.

white, clear, and gold cover 90% of my needs That's kind of what I was thinking would be all I need. I have a gold I absolutely love, and as you said, I can emboss over coloured inks for the rest of the colours. I think I'm going to end up pulling them out this weekend and saying goodbye to some of them, although I'm not really sure how I manged to derail this into a purging discussion! What is your favorite gold EP? My first purchase of embossing powder was SU's Gold Glory (now retired). I still have some left and love it. You have to be special to get that on your card! LOL! I'm now using Ranger's SuperFine Gold. I started only buying SuperFine EP's to cut down on product because I would always seem to use regular on a detailed image or sentiment.

Last weekend a service line was damaged and I had no tv (cable), no landline, and no internet. I scrapped 11 layouts in those days (and cooked several real meals, and did ALL the laundry). It's amazing what you can achieve without the internet to distract you

What is your favorite gold EP? It's an old one and I think they were an Aussie company - Alison Ellis Design. Their powders are just so fine and they emboss beautifully. They were my first embossing powder purchase so I hated the finish on the AC ones I bought at a later time for the colour. The closest match I have in my stash are the Ranger Super Fine.

I am trying to make my stash work harder for me. About 18 months ago I went through all my stamp sets and sold/donated the ones I knew I'd never use again. Then last year I typed up a list of all the sets I own and crossed them off as I used them. It's been really eye opening for me, as I only used roughly half my sets last year, and don't consider that I have a particularly large stash. Doing the list also made it clear to me where I didn't need to buy any more sets (reading), and where the gaps were. I've filled some of those gaps, and added some extra basics once I realised how often I reach for those stamp sets. I'm planning to carry on for this year and figure if there are sets I still haven't used by the end of this year, its definitely time to say goodbye to them. I've decided to do the same with my inks this year. I'm certain I have colours that I keep because they are pretty rather than because they are useful, and I'm hoping this will really help me see I don't need to buy any more soft ballerina pink or mint inks because I'm probably not using all the variations of those I already own. I started something similar last year - I put a little green sticker on a stamp set, die, or embossing folder once I've used it. I had typed up a massive spreadsheet with all of my stamps, dies, and embossing folders and somehow it got deleted - something happened with a sync with the cloud between my devices. So I use the green sticker now instead. I can flip through my stamps and see what I haven't used in the last year and decide if it's something I still want, or alternately, if I've used it a ton it may be time to get rid of it, too. I do keep an inventory list in Color My Life, too. I've started adding photos of projects I've made to the stamp set, die, etc. entry, too.

I needed a re-inker for my black ink and wouldn't you know it, the place I have a gift card for doesn't stock it. I had to shop somewhere else with lots of temptations. I was thinking I should make the shipping cost worth my while by throwing in one of their exclusive stamps that I've had on my wishlist for ages. But I let Honey find me a $5 coupon instead which almost paid for the shipping and only got the ink refill.
I was so tempted by a couple of sets! But I tried to think "what would I use (that I already own) if I didn't have this (new) thing?" and that helped a lot.

I've only found it at a couple of online stores here, both of which then offer up lots of temptation for other shipping, because without anything else in my cart, the shipping will be more than the reinker. I've bookmarked the sites for when I've finished my 50 layouts and can shop again, and until now hadn't thought about it!

What is your favorite gold EP? Chiming because I absolutely love the metallics from Altenew's Crisp Embossing Powders line. Antique Gold is so pretty and these powders are very fine, perfect for detail work. Here it is in action:

(Maybe ) I did put it on my list.

I opted to think of the $5 coupon as offsetting the $7 shipping on the $9 reinker instead of paying $7 to ship a $4 reinker... lol. I don't trust myself to remember to order the reinker later when I'm buying other things. I'm cursing scrapbook dot com for not carrying it though. I don't understand why they don't, they have the pads and other colors from that brand. It would be easy to add it to an upcoming order if they had it. And I have a gift card! Oh well. Can't stress about something I buy once every 5 years. (I'm still thinking about the stamp sets I didn't buy though! One's been on my wishlist since 2019)

That's exactly what I would have told myself too We don't tend to have shipping discounts here like you guys seem to so I know I'd just need to suck it up and pay the shipping, or add other things to my cart to make the shipping cost seem worthwhile. I'm also irrationally annoyed the sb.com don't carry the reinker I need, I can buy the same ink pad I need the reinker for from them.

In being on the chilly side of things with my pattern paper, I have realized that I have a huge problem overestimating how much paper I will actually use for a project, or want from a particular collection. I almost weakened and bought some new paper that would be perfect for a layout I want to do, but instead dove into the stash to find something that would work instead. I landed on some old Basic Grey and when I was going through it, I have over 60 sheets of their Sublime collection. 60?!?! What was I thinking?
Not to mention it has been sitting in my stash for at least 15 years, probably more. I haven’t used a single sheet because it was a favourite and I needed to find the perfect use for it.
Lesson learned, think twice before buying the second sheet of the same paper (or the third!!) and use the paper!

Lesson learned, think twice before buying the second sheet of the same paper (or the third!!) and use the paper! This is something I know I need to get better at. I used to only ever buy one sheet of anything, then I started doing double pages so I started buying two, then I discovered how hard it was to buy my favourite types of patterns when they weren't trendy any more so I started buying those patterns in bulk. It's definitely been handy having multiple sheets of the same pattern when I'm working on my travel albums, but I could probably find ways to work around it if I didn't have them.

I have realized that I have a huge problem overestimating how much paper I will actually use for a project a lesson I still need to learn - my 2021 DD is a case in point. I'm making an 8x8 album and I'm not a heavy PP user in general...so what did I buy? A 12 x12 paper pad with SIXTY sheets 15 designs)...I'm going to be using it FOREVER. My only saving grace is that many of the patterns are versatile and can be used year-round but geesh...way too much paper for that project.

I just went to the paper person site to see if there was anything I needed. Everything I liked I had to ask myself if I would survive. I’m happy to say that nothing jumped in my cart and I will survive. I’m having a really crappy week catching covid and now my pipes froze so I could use some retail therapy but I shall remain strong and just get off on the dopamine from not buying all these adorable things.

Oof, I'm in the same boat. Hard week here too, and some of the things are so tempting. Maybe if I wait long enough they will sell out and the decision will be made for me. I'm sorry you have Covid, I hope you are on the mend and get well soon! Also sorry about the pipes freezing

(and matching envelopes! You can get through a lot of paper if you use 12x12 papers to make envelopes.) Hopefully you can make good use of it for other projects during the year but if you still have a bunch leftover in October I'd chop it up and make lots of sheetload style cards. 12x12 paper pads are almost never a good idea for me - I get so sick of the patterns.

joblackford - I was already considering using the scraps for a sheetload (or more) of cards. Not entirely sure how to make envelopes...does it require a special tool or template?

I'm not Jo, but I have an answer for you. I have the WRMK Envelope Punch Board that I usually use. On the back of my Martha Stewart Score Board is an envelope scorer. Cut your paper to the size indicated, line it up and score. You can also find PDF envelope templates on Google you can download, print, trace and cut. I did this before I got the WRMK.

The cards and envelopes are a great idea joblackford. With cards being so expensive this is a great use of some that paper that has been taking up real estate in my scrap room forever. I’ll definitely be checking out the sheet load of cards!

I’ll definitely be checking out the sheet load of cards! I've seen some people on YT use a 12x12 sheet to make an envelope, card, and bookmark (and maybe even more things from the scraps). I used up some single sided unattractive papers by putting the patterned side inside the envelope when I folded it which has the bonus of making it easy to address.

Yup, I have the mini envelope board, which I use fairly often, and the MS scoreboard guide, which I never use. There are also lots of guides online for different methods and sizes. There's also the option of using pieces to make an envelope liner which takes less paper and works well if you already have lots of straight flap envelopes (easier than the ones with a pointed flap). If I spot a good YT video I'll add it into the thread. I know there are some I've watched before that use up lots of patterned paper with minimal waste. Here's one option that doesn't require any special tools: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLMugX1qzCk

I uploaded almost 100 photos from Persnickety with credits I bought years ago and I feel like I'm finally using my stash by buying them. Yeah, I need to do that! I have a ton of 12x12 print credits too, but haven’t digital scrapbooked in a long time.

I am about to unchill for some digitals from Paper Person. I was going to order yesterday but I'm going back and forth on what to get from the holiday digitals on sale. The struggle is real. I guess I'll make up my mind in the next couple of days?

Halfway through and I’m staying strong! Part of my chill, I was going to allow myself $25 for add ons at Elle’s Studio. I only bought one stamp - I might have waited, but it was 20% off for subbers. My philosophy on a good chill/freeze is not to simply load up all the things you want to buy and then buy them on Feb 1 (if you’re chilling in Jan). That’s just delayed gratification. 😉 So, if it’s something I know I would buy come Feb 1, better to get it now on sale than pay more later. I really wanted the new Jane Heart alpha stamps, but they are not a must-have right now, so I will wait for a sale and pick them up if they’re still in stock. The rest I resisted. Very pleased I only spent half of my allotment!
I also had accounted for spending $25ish at SG for their free kit weekend, but I wasn’t fond of the free kit, so the items I had picked will stay in my cart for now. I was expecting a winter kit, but instead it’s general with lots of flowers, and I’m not a fan of flowers on my pages. A bit disappointing, but my bursting stash will thank me.
I was really tempted by the AE story kit. I like the colors and the changes to the kit, but when I really looked at it and thought about how I might use the product, I realized that I don’t talk (or even “self talk”) the way Ali does, so the prompts and phrases wouldn’t be a good match for me. I can easily add “You Can Do It!” through stamps or the computer to create my own embellishments. Another resistance win!
