But for basics like adhesive I remember the answer one lady gave to "where do you keep your extra stock of this?" "At the store!" Ah, the privileged American position! Decent, acid-free adhesive is hard to find here so I order mine from SB.com. As an international, it can be just weeks and weeks of waiting to do another project if you don't plan ahead and order a few rolls at a time. Been there, done that. I'm running low again and panicking about having to place another order if I don't want to find myself without adhesive come late February. But I have to order something else to make it worth the shipping + tax duties. So annoying. I don't want to order too much adhesive either as some has semi-melted during a heatwave once (no A/C in my place). Pfff...

Anybody here doing an extra saving plan for the year? I'm setting aside an extra 20€/week to get a bonus 1000€ in my savings by the end of the year if all goes well. It's a really fun way to save more than initially planned and to keep your extra spending in check.
I'm also donating some luggage that I no longer want to store. In exchange, I'll be getting the Patagonia mini MLC from the Black Hole range. It's not the perfect one bag carry-on but it's nearly so I'll be saving on top of my extra savings to buy one later in the year. With the hopes of getting to travel again in the not-too-distant future, that is... Having a bigger spendy goal in mind to save for is another great way to curb treat-yo-self shopping impulses.

So far, I haven't purchased anything this year! I organized my 2021 SBTM kits into a 9x12 album I picked up during the AE BF sale. Laying them out in the page protectors made it abundantly clear how the colors and motifs in each kit are not well aligned! I also put aside the wood veneer pieces to get rid of and I punched out the chipboard I know I'll never use. The stuff I am keeping is in one of the SBTM zippered pouches, and the stamps are filed away with my other stamps. I'd like to use the 2021 kits to document 2022, especially since I cancelled my subscription.
I'm thinking about selling my AE cast offs. I have a ton of unused packs of wood veneer, cork, and rubber embellishments, the SK acrylic words, and miscellaneous chipboard pieces and stickers. Since she went to single sided on everything, I keep the cards I don't want, as I can use the reverse sides for journaling and stamping.

(I grew up at the bottom of the world, I remember not being able to get anything good). I was also thinking about Inked and their habit of not having basics that you'd think they should never run out of, like page protectors, for months on end (before the pandemic gave them an excuse). And obvs the pandemic has thrown our sense of "just in time" into disarray. It sucks. Especially factoring in shipping costs

And obvs the pandemic has thrown our sense of "just in time" into disarray. It sucks. Especially factoring in shipping costs Aww, don't worry about. We all have our blind spots and that's why there is no one-method in minimalism. I live in the city and the first eight weeks of the pandemic was the first time ever I struggled to get access to food and essentials. Otherwise, I've never needed to stock up (and haven't stocked up since either). But for people living more remotely or in more unpredictable environments like the mountains, having some extra food on hand can be vital. That's my blind spot. Same for the 20-dollars-under-20-minutes rule. I love that you shouldn't keep extras of anything (or hang onto stuff you haven't used in a while) you can get in under 20 minutes for under 20 dollars but for some people, 20 dollars is a significant amount of money and keeping an extra couple of things to avoid having to repurchase them in the future can thus make sense. Like you said in your earlier message, it's such a fine line sometimes. My favourite thing in the past few years has been relying on others to help me out instead of buying a tool or a product I will likely only need once (at least right now). It's a much better trade for me to ask someone whether they have a small amount of some product I only need this one time than to buy a full bottle myself and have it sitting mostly full on a shelf for years. I will happily come over to grab the amount I need and leave you with packet of buttery biscuits in exchange. Sure, it may cost me the same to buy the whole bottle but again, I don't need all of that. I'd rather gift you those buttery biscuits instead.

If I ever want to talk myself out of ordering something, I just need to start organizing my current supplies I went through a small crafty "junk" drawer and got overwhelmed very quickly. So many random items that need to be used up!

I am so grateful for this thread. I quickly went back to my old, spendy habits. I got so much last year and did very little scrapbooking, so I'm chilly now. I was impressed with myself when I decided not to place a big order with Elle's Studio for Project Life yesterday...seriously...I need nothing...it just looked good. BUT when I got an email about some stamps back in stock from Studio Calico this morning, I loaded up my cart. It's just stamps, I said, I will reuse them, and they ship FREE!!! Holy cow. And then I read this thread, and deleted the items from my cart. I seriously need nothing. Thank you all for your inspiration!!!

I just went and unsubscribed from promotional emails. It wasn't too many, but I don't need the temptation. There isn't a fear of missing out if you don't know about it in the first place right?!?!

I'm trying to summon the strength to do that. I think that is an excellent idea. If you're worried about missing coupon codes you might really need you can (in gmail at least) set up a rule that all emails from xyz@youknowwhere get archived straight away and skip your inbox. Then if you do go shopping at youknowwhere you can dig into those messages for a code. Or just use hotmail and everything will probably go to junk whether you want it to or not, lol. I did this with SSS and MFT and I've never thought about it again. I could totally just unsubscribe because I'm not sure I would actually remember to go looking for a code at this point. I still see their stuff on IG and YT regardless... but I've gotten really ruthless with emails. I don't know who told certain companies that they should send a daily update/message. Even weekly is too much for me.

There isn't a fear of missing out if you don't know about it in the first place right?!?! Correct! I unsubscribed to a whole lot of emails last year and it really helped me. I read here so frequently that I usually know what's being released anyway, and that's more than enough temptation for me.

Although the pandemic has taught me that for common items, have one backup in stock, and replace it when you open the backup. My problem with adhesive is I have way too many random kinds that I need to use and not restock, because they aren’t my go-to.

I'm planning on working through all my adhesive that is still good (I went through my enormous stash and ended up throwing out a bunch of liquid adhesives because they were all dried up or the bottles cracked!) and when that's all gone I will only buy what I really liked and that worked well for me instead of buying random one offs that I probably won't use.

I am trying to make my stash work harder for me. About 18 months ago I went through all my stamp sets and sold/donated the ones I knew I'd never use again. Then last year I typed up a list of all the sets I own and crossed them off as I used them. It's been really eye opening for me, as I only used roughly half my sets last year, and don't consider that I have a particularly large stash. Doing the list also made it clear to me where I didn't need to buy any more sets (reading), and where the gaps were. I've filled some of those gaps, and added some extra basics once I realised how often I reach for those stamp sets. I'm planning to carry on for this year and figure if there are sets I still haven't used by the end of this year, its definitely time to say goodbye to them.
I've decided to do the same with my inks this year. I'm certain I have colours that I keep because they are pretty rather than because they are useful, and I'm hoping this will really help me see I don't need to buy any more soft ballerina pink or mint inks because I'm probably not using all the variations of those I already own.

I spent half of a SU gift voucher yesterday, but don't consider that as "spending". I'm super hopeful to get through at last the first half of this year Only using what' I own. Very grateful this thread is here to remind/inspire me!

Bumping this thread back to page 1 and...
I started un-subscribing to store emails today and JM's crafty sales email. I decided to keep subscribed to blogs because I can use those ideas with items I already own.
Stay Strong!

This post makes me realize that I can get rid of all my stamps except maybe the roller date one. I don't remember the last time I stamped something. While I'm at it, I can get rid of the embossing powders too. I should check my inks too. I mostly use them for inking edges and I mostly use brown, black or pink.

The winter sales period has officially opened where I live and I didn't buy a thing. I didn't even bother looking at the online scrap stores this morning despite getting a couple -80% emails. I wish I could say it was a feat of will and resistance but it was mostly a very passive "meh, pass" attitude.

While I'm at it, I can get rid of the embossing powders too. I should put these on my list too. I used to emboss a fair bit, but I can't remember the last time I did, maybe once in 2020? I'm pretty sure I could just keep a couple of very favourite colours if I felt I really needed to hang on to them and wouldn't notice the rest had gone.

Count me in for chillin'! I immensely overspent last year and still have so much product to use and get through. "oh this is a good deal" doesn't really work unless you use that good deal. I think the only things I'll really be okay purchasing is adhesive and selphy paper/ink. If I'm buying those I know I'm using other products. I signed up for the Valentine card swap and did purchase a few things.. however it was with a prepaid visa I'd received from a settlement so that's practically free money

There have been a couple of things that have tempted me but fortunately they're out of stock so maybe by the time they're in stock I'll have forgotten about them. I uploaded almost 100 photos from Persnickety with credits I bought years ago and I feel like I'm finally using my stash by buying them.

I gave mine away when I gave up stamping years ago and then I rebought them several years later when I started again - totally not a big deal though! They're not terribly expensive. I bought them as I needed them: white, clear, and gold cover 90% of my needs, even as a cardmaker. I could use silver and maybe rose gold but I can live without them. If you have colored inks you can usually clear emboss over the top of them more successfully then using colored powders anyway (esp. black!)

white, clear, and gold cover 90% of my needs That's kind of what I was thinking would be all I need. I have a gold I absolutely love, and as you said, I can emboss over coloured inks for the rest of the colours. I think I'm going to end up pulling them out this weekend and saying goodbye to some of them, although I'm not really sure how I manged to derail this into a purging discussion!

I haven't bought anything scrappy this year, besides photos (which don't count towards my no buy list).
Last weekend a service line was damaged and I had no tv (cable), no landline, and no internet. I scrapped 11 layouts in those days (and cooked several real meals, and did ALL the laundry).
I nearly used up a 6x6" Halloween pad, used several Halloween sticker packs, and exclusively shopped from stash.
So far this year, I don't even feel tempted to shop. I'll continue ordering photos, and will buy adhesive as needed.
