I did not buy one single Christmas gift for my family. Or stocking stuffer. This morning, for the first time in my life, I am not giving or opening up a single gift. Or cooking. I didn’t make any Christmas cookies. And I am OK with it all!
Instead, we are on a family trip to California. And we are having so much fun. We don’t even know what we are doing today, and we’re good with that! We are just going with the flow…

I did not go over board with anything really. One gift each kid then I gave them a check for the rest of what I would have spent. Stocking were mostly stuffed with food, chocolate etc.
I did not really cook. Not from scratch anyway. I warmed some stuff up that’s all.

-only half as much decorating -only half as much baking -no make up or dressing up on Christmas day. It feels so good to just wear lounge pants and a sweater

Using wrapping paper for DH's presents. This year I went all furoshiki and bought gorgeous Christmas fabric that was tied around the presents, and will be washed, ironed and re-used year after year. It was all so very pretty and quick to wrap, easy to unwrap and no waste. I absolutely loved it and will do it again.

I didn't do much cooking. Bread pudding for breakfast, then we ate the last couple pieces of leftover pizza, and for dinner just lunchmeat sandwiches. I woke up at 5 am and realized I hadn't put the frozen rolls in the fridge to thaw overnight, but we ended up not being hungry until much later than usual so it didn't matter.

No cookies for Santa. My 10 and 5 year old weren’t interested and I didn’t push it.
I did very few gifts for the kids from us.
Santa sacks wrapped the gifts from Santa and I dumped pretty much everything in them that dd didn’t know I bought for DS.
Good call too because I ended up sick with a respiratory bug and 102 fever last night and today. I’ve been sleeping all day and still feel like butt. Covid test Tuesday which is as soon as I could get/find one.

2018-2020: Only the living room tree was put up and decorated. Gifts were minimal. More thought put into them as a result.
This year, we bought a fake tree for the family room and decorated as had been our tradition. Honestly, we are all struggling terribly with this being our first Christmas without Mom and Girlie, who was our Christmas dog. She loved Opening gifts and destroying the paper. Her excitement was always infectious. The whole thing was an attempt to help with the spirit of the season. Did not help.
Dad asked to go out for dinner too late to get reservations. DH decided to make a ham instead of the traditional turkey dinner. Mom and Dad always made the Christmas turkey. Dad has done his best to keep busy around the house with extra projects. DH has baked and cooked for two days straight. It’s easier than facing reality. If I could have, I would have slept through Christmas Eve until it was time to get up for work on Monday morning. The Boy did his best to help everyone.
One thing I need to do for next Christmas is to buy a stocking for Dad. Of lesser importance is finding lights for the trees.
Also, I really need to find a hiding place that I will easily remember. Never did find the elusive gift. Wondering if it is holed up with my 2022 planner, as it is also missing.
The oldest cat seems to have taken Girlie’s place in the Christmas Joy. It’s the first year she has shown any interest in the tree. She loved the boxes and wrapping paper. I wonder if she is just feeling better after the procedure or if she is more comfortable now that the only dog in residence is smaller than she. She would share Girlie’s bed and love seat, so I don’t know.

True confessions -- the tree is up, it is pre-lit, DD put two types of pretty garland on it, and we put on two new ornaments that we got as gifts. And THAT is the extent of our tree decorating this year. I did take extra time decorating my hearth and mantle, which I haven't done in many years. It was fun to buy some new items and change up my theme a little bit. So, that's my story as to why I didn't decorate the tree. And I'm stickin' to it!

I didn't bake cookies for neighbors and friends. I just don't have the energy this year. It is disappointing, because I look fwd to baking these cookies all year. That's OK. I'm saving energy for tmw. I love to bake. The problem is, who’s going to eat this stuff now that my kids are grown and it’s just DH and me… so I cut way back on baking. And I bagged instead of wrapping, an activity I despise. So freeing to give up the dreaded wrapping of the gifts.

The biggest gift I ever gave myself, was not to make things for presents. I think every crafty person likes to make things for others, but I find it so stressful making things to a deadline. So, no handmade presents. People can have things randomly through the year.
(All the presents I chose and bought were well received. Everyone is happy).

Well for 2022 I ill no longer put up with emotional manipulation and blackmail from my mother. When she said she would leave and never come back, I should have let her....but honesty I didn't want to create a bigger scene. But I will NEVER have her back.

Our son and his family just got here yesterday, due to a canceled flight. I told my BFF we were not have an Instagram worthy dinner, we were having a good enough dinner. That is what I did. One veggie, no salads, and put out a bowl of grapes instead of a fruit platter. No one cared.

One veggie, no salads, and put out a bowl of grapes instead of a fruit platter. No one cared. The pressure is high for everything to be instagram worthy. Can't we go back to the 80's? People didn't care what was in the background of family pics back then lol

Most were not appreciated. I did always make chocolate chip cookies for my FIL as he appreciated them but no one else. I still enjoy crafting snd if someone appreciated them I would but it’s nice not having the stress of crafting things for gifts.

I know I'm late to the party but my list of things I didn't do was sizeable this year so I thought I'd share.
Didn't fully decorate the tree and only used non-breakable ornaments because of our new kitty.
Didn't send cards
Didn't make the quilt for new grand nephew
Didn't go crazy meal planning or cooking. I enlisted help for meals -- dh and I cooked the Christmas Eve meal of empanadas (me) and tamales from scratch (dh). His recipe took all day but was delicious. These foods aren't part of our heritage or family traditions but they are dishes we all love and we've been saying for at least three years that we wanted to do this on Christmas Eve. So, maybe a new tradition is born.
Told the kids they were in charge of Christmas day dinner. They planned and executed a Cobb salad which was refreshing and welcome after the meal of the night before and all the cookies I ate all week.
Didn't go crazy with gifts. Got each kid three or four gifts plus $$.

We moved the week before Christmas, then left for a week. It was a crazy time. We barely managed to set up the huge lit reindeer off the moving van and got it plugged in. So that's all we did as far as decorating. Makes for easy take-down at least.
