I have some M's gc's to spend and someone mentioned a hot foil system. I have a Minc for foiling from reactive gel or laser printed materials.
Does anyone have the system that heats up and then goes through a Big Shot or a Vagabond machine with special stamps?

I have the Gemini Jr hot foil press system. I really love it. It took me a long time to decide to get it because at first I thought it seemed silly, but now it's my favourite technique. I have Yana Smakula to thank for that - her foiling projects are incredible. Here's a do's and don'ts video from her (she uses the Spellbinders system): youtu.be/tCg-aII5qo0The hot foiling adds dimension, like an engraved look - I have the Minc and the Foil Quill, as well, and they all do slightly different things, each has their own use. I used the Foil Quill to write invitations for my niece's wedding shower this past summer and it was perfect, for instance. I couldn't do that with the hot foil plate. The only systems that I know are the Spellbinder's Glimmer system, and the Gemini Jr system. I don't think you can use the hot foil systems with just any die cutting machine, like the Big Shot, although if you search YouTube there must be hacks by this point.

I have the Spellbinders Glimmer and use it with my Big Shot, no hacks needed. The Gemini Foil Press needs to be used with the Gemini Jr. and you can't use the Glimmer with the Gemini. Not an expert, but I watch a lot of foiling videos on youtube by Nancy Stamps - and she is one I believe the Gemini system has temperature settings and timer settings that you can customize; the Glimmer doesn't. But I didn't want to have to buy a new diecutting machine along with my foiling machine, so the Glimmer was the one. I love the look of the foiled images - like marg said, they press the design into the card and just look really cool. With the foil plates, you can get some really detailed designs and for me, it needs less tweaking than when I'm doing toner foiling (although I do love that, too!) You can use the foiling plates in either machine - Gemini plates work fine in the Glimmer; Spellbinders plates work in the Gemini. The plates are pretty pricey compared to foiling with a Minc, but you can bring the price down by watching for sales. PinkFresh designs has some foil plates that coordinate with dies and stencils and stamps - those get to be quite expensive, but they're just gorgeous. Yana Smakula also has some really nice dies with Spellbinders. You can also foil with regular cutting dies. I confess, I have purchased some foil plates from sellers on Ali Express. I've been able to get them to work ok, but they are definitely not as thick or as heavy as the brand name ones I've gotten. Also, there is a seller on Facebook (bluebonnet foil rgb, I think) that sells both hot foil for using with your foil press/glimmer setup and toner foils for the Minc. She has some really pretty foils and she's very reasonably priced. You have to go to her facebook page and message her with what you want, and she'll message back. Seriously, I am really happy with mine and I'm glad I bought it. I just need to use it more to complete actual cards instead of just playing with it and going "oooh - shiny!!"

I think there may be a hot foil pen that you can use with brass stencils, and possibly with the Silhouette, but I’m not sure about the latter. I picked it up on sale at TM awhile back, but haven’t gotten around to trying it. I have a ton of brass stencils, though, which is why I got it. It’s also for freehand use.

Thanks for the comparison, cbet . Does the glimmer foil system require special foils? Or would any heat transfer foils work?

Thanks for the comparison, cbet . Does the glimmer foil system require special foils? Or would any heat transfer foils work? As long as they are heat transfer foils and not Minc/Deco Foil/Toner Reactive foils, they'll work. The Minc-type foils need something to stick to - adhesive, deco gel, toner. The Glimmer/Gemini heat transfer foils have some sort of adhesive built in and only need heat and pressure to stick. If you use Minc foils in your Glimmer, they won't stick. If you use heat transfer foils in your Minc, it will stick to the whole piece of cardstock and not just the image. Both kinds will work if you want to foil stripes with double-sided tape and no heat. I haven't tried it, but I would bet that both types would work with the Duo-Gel where you don't use the Minc/Laminator and just put it thru your Big Shot.

I'm planning to get a Glimmer system from Spellbinders. Waiting for an other $30 off of $100 and while I'm waiting I collect points. If you review already purchased items you get points.

Thank you for reminding me to review my items - I collect the points, too. I think Spellbinders has the best foil plates in the industry, with PinkFresh quickly catching up! The Stamp Market and The Greetery have come out with a few, too, that are quite gorgeous. It's great to see the options opening up. Hot Foiling is just one of those wow things that you have to see in person to really appreciate fully. Every time I hot foil I impress (no pun intended) myself lol. FYI, Hammermill Premium Color Cover Copy 100 lb cardstock (the one with the chameleon on the packaging) works amazingly well for hot foiling - your results really do depend on the paper you use - the smoother the better. It sold out on Amazon shortly after one of the online events recommended it - I think it was Crop n Create last October. It was readily available and then suddenly it was just all sold out after Crop n Create. I think it's finally back in stock.

My Spellbinders Glimmer System--and the extra dies I ordered on sale early January--arrived today. I got as far as taking everything out of the box, and finding a place for the machine and dies to live, but have not attempted to use it yet. Will need to watch a few videos first.
If I set it on my Slice glass mat on top of my scrap desk, that should be safe enough as far as heat goes, won't it?

If I set it on my Slice glass mat on top of my scrap desk, that should be safe enough as far as heat goes, won't it? I think setting it on glass should be ok. But if anyone knows any better please chime in! I’m a newbie too grammadee! For the last few weeks my creativity has gotten its mojo back. I’ve been a consistent crafter but not with a whole lot of new techniques. I started playing around with Paper Glaze and while I was watching a video a foiling video popped up. I didn’t get it at first so I did some searching and found a video by Cathy Zielske. I have always loved her work but haven’t watched her much of late. Her foiling video was so thorough I had to order one. I also watched SO many others and the work I saw was absolutely stunning. I almost feel like I need to spend a whole day watching videos. I went on Scrapbook.com (a serious blast from the past for me!) and they had a Spellbinders bundle with the Glimmer and the Platinum die cutter for $170, which I thought was a great deal. I have a Big Shot but it takes up a lot of space on my craft table. I leave it out because I use it all the time. I think a new folding die cutter will be worth the investment since I’ll get some space back. I also ordered a sentiments plate by Spellbinders, along with some foil (all the blue I could find because it’s blue and I have no project in mind) and one floral plate. I really wanted the Pinkfresh butterfly bundle but it was sold out. Bottom line is I’m so glad I found this thread. Such useful information that has made me even more excited about my purchase.
