I am seriously thinking of making the switch. I already scrap some in 8.5 x 11 just because I feel the size fits the photos better. I am just thinking, especially for my kids' school albums, which I am considering starting finally as this is my son's last year in elementary...I think they would look through them more if they were easier to handle. I watch a very old school scrapper on YouTube that does 8.5 x 11 exclusively, and...it's just very tempting. She has a go-to design for accommodating 3-4 photos depending on the orientation, and it just all seems to make sense in my head.
I have truly run out of room for my 12 x 12 D ring albums and will be switching to post bound on those just to save room. But horizontal storage is the problem, and that would be the same for 12 x 12 or 8.5 x 11. Thoughts?

I’d love to know who your inspiration is. I’m currently trying 12x9, but that doesn’t give me much more room other than depth. I’m quickly running out of room also.

She is chatty and watching her create totally relaxes me. Her style is not my style, but I admire that she knows what she likes, and has a solid system in place for everything.

I’m quickly running out of room also. 9x12 is actually quite a bit bigger, square inch wise, then 8.5 x 11, but also quite a bit smaller then 12x12. I prefer the rectangular layout rather then square, so that has always been my preference. I only ever did 12x12 for Disney vacations because I needed the space, but those layouts were so hard for me. I did 8.5 x11 until SC (now scrapbook.com) came out with 9x12. It is perfect for me. Easier to trim the paper and so much easier to scrap on. Neither size gives me anymore shelf space over 12x12 though. Once they are on the shelf the spines are the same size.. Op, I would try a few layouts in 8.5 or 9x12 and see how they go. And the albums are much easier to handle! Especially for kids.

I don't do a lot of traditional type pages anymore, but I love 8.5x11 when I do decide to go with one. I like to find regular binders with a pretty design to hold my 8.5x11 layouts which last me a long time because I only do a few pages a year at this point. I do like that they are easier to flip through as well.

I've always been an 8.5x11 scrapper although I do a few 8x8s for specific albums (Scouting) - I prefer the rectangular size and that I can buy bulk page protectors and white/black cardstock

Skellinton I just reread what I wrote and it was clear as mud! I meant 12x12 and 9x12 albums are basically taking up the same amount of real estate in my shelves. Not sure with everything sized for 12x12 if 8.5x11 is going to give me more room.

I did 8.5x11 for several years. The last few years my family album is 12x12 with divided sheet protectors. I only did separate albums until my kids were about five. My reasons; I don't take many photos now, I'm typically the only one who looks at albums and I'm okay with the bigger size, and there are rarely any big events where I feel like it deserves it's own page. If I do want a full page, it's easy to throw one in there. I also have LOTS of page protectors. Once I am able to use those up, I think I may switch to 6x8 or even the mini binder sizes they have for offices. Easier and cheaper to purchase.
That being said, I still like to have fun with embellishing more and having fun with pages on occasion. I have separate albums I put out with the decorations for things like birthdays, Christmas, and Halloween. Those are 8.5x11. Doing a full sized 12x12 page was always too intimidating for me. I have since made a few, but much prefer this size.

I have always loved 8.5x11. I wish it was still the default size. I hate the 12x12 albums. They are just so huge. I like that my 8.5x11 albums can fit nicely in most bookcases. I will be fine if I have a full wall of bookcases full of smaller albums vs the huge kallax units since that's all I can find to hold the 12x12 albums. The 9x12 albums are nice as an in between, but they don't fit as nicely on most bookcases and they get pretty heavy too.

I prefer 8.5x11 size too. When I need inspiration I will go to my Pinterest board, but I usually go to refugeepea's because it is so nicely organized. I get more ideas there than in my pins. Thanks for sharing! It has been my favorite place to hang out for many years! When I made 12x12 books, my grands couldn't hold them on their laps. That's when I went back to the smaller size. I did our trip to Japan to see our daughter in 12x12 because I had so many fun embellishments, but I'm sticking with the 8.5x11 now.

I have been an 8.5 x 11 scrapbooker, since the first day I started (25 years ago). I would never switch sizes, because I like and must have >> continuity and matching. A different size would bother me and my "must match" sensories and idiosyncrasies, etc... I am a crazy like that, and very okay with how I am. Must match!

I use 8.5x11 for most of my albums. 12x12 for only a few.
The smaller size is so much easier to accommodate. Shelf space-wise, buying page protectors in bulk at Office Depot, buying b&w and kraft cardstock, etc.
I've made my kids' school albums in 8.5x11 until high school. Then I go 12x12 because they tend to be involved more and have more trips & competitions to show off.

I think I’ll make a switch down to 8.5x11 eventually. 12x12 just holds more, so as my kids were young and I had more to show, I liked that size. But I’ve always loved 8x8 as well, making MANY special albums of that size.
Maybe 2022 is the year I make the switch?! But I have several 12x12 albums I haven’t filled…but I also have stacks of layouts made this year from kits that need a home still… I made a BUNCH of kits this fall at crops that I need to print pictures for, and that’s goal #1 this year to get them put away.

I have quite a few 12x12 albums and have some storage for them, but most all of my albums are 8.5x11 D ring. I love that size. I cannot go back to 12x12 unless it was a very specific album. I wish I had never done 12x12 they are so unwieldy.
Personally if I could start over I would do digital and have flat photo books made. But that is water under the bridge and I have bookshelves all over my house to hold my 8.5x11 albums. They are so much easier to accommodate on a shelf.

I think 8.5x11" would be so much easier to look through and store but I need lots of room to work with and after 20 years I pretty much think in squares.
