for the "viral" blizzard experts say may happen in January? Omicron blizzard may disrupt societyDH and I expected a supply chain disruption a couple weeks before the first shutdown so we were well prepared for that one. I don't think there will be any kind of forced shutdown like that again but I have read a couple stories and posts predicting it may be difficult to keep stores open due to staffing shortages, trucks not delivering, etc. I guess I learned my lesson in 2020 because I did a mental calculation of food and other supplies and I think we'll be okay with everything other than toilet paper and coffee. But I'm feeling the same cognitive dissonance I did in March 2020 when there started to be dire predictions but life was going on normally all around us. My friend left on a cruise this morning, our favorite local restaurant sent out a tweet that they are all booked up today and tomorrow. I'm taking my DD to an art museum later this morning, we had a big shopping excursion in the city yesterday. Are these warnings much ado about nothing or are things really going to start shutting down?

I predict small. localized rolling shutdowns, like the Wal Mart we have seen this week. Temporary, till workers are back up and facilities have been cleaned. Maybe some supply delays on a small scale as individual facilities deal. I don't expect to see whole areas all shut down at once. Maybe pollyanna-ish. IDK.

I think that most of us are going to Covid at some point but I don’t think that we’re at risk to starve and there’s no need to panic .

I'm very stocked up on things still. But, in general I prefer to stock up. I always buy 2 or 3 of all our toiletries, for example. Plus, I did a huge grocery shop before DS and his family came. They were delayed 2 days, so I really have extra food in the freezer.
If I wasn't so stocked up, I'd definitely buy a few extra things right now.

OTOH, my experiences in 2020 and 2021 with random things suddenly being in short supply or changing hours without notice has turned me in to a small scale prepper with my favorite foods and necessities.

I think the best thing to plan for is if my family has to quarantine for a week or two from a positive diagnosis. I don’t think there will be major food shortages. But I wasn’t in the US the last time the shelves were cleared out so I may be naive.

This is exactly why the CDC changed quarantine rules.
I have maintained a 2 month supply of TP and paper toweling since the both got back in stock.
My freezer is stocked with regular rotation and I am good on canned items.
I do need to restock on GF flours though. Used my stock for the holidays. That was the plan though.
I don't see big shut downs just small ones here and there.
I do need to look at our medicine cabinet though and stock up there and check dates.

Well I still have all the bags of beans I bought at the beginning of this because it turns out none of us like beans.

I agree that we may see spotty, temporary closures. I'm not concerned about any large scale disturbances except possibly in air travel.

I’m always well stocked so I don’t see the need to do anything else to prepare.

We just had a cow processed so we are good on beef and I bought chicken the other day so we are good there. Probably should pick up some laundry stuff as I opened the last Tide the other day.
I do plan on ordering a case of our favorite red wine, though. #priorities

No I’m not, and I live in Nj where we already have hospitals on red alert and diverting patients to other locations. I see no reason to stock up on anything and I hope people don’t go overboard like they did when this started.

I think we're ok for now. We'll adjust our meal plans around any shortages we come across.
We're not super brand loyal or picky so subs can be made.

Epeanymous…was it the beans themselves that they didn’t like or the way you prepared them.
When we have pinto beans we make sure they have a thicker sauce around them and I serve them with toppings to select and it makes it more ‘fun’. Toppings such as fresh avocado, fresh tomatoes, chopped onion, fresh salsa (red or green) etc…oh and with a tortilla or a good cornbread. Game changer.
Or maybe beans just aren’t their thing…it happens. 😃

We bought a modest amount of dried beans/lentils, a decent amount of canned beans, and 20 pounds of rice. I did make lentil soup enough times to use up both yellow & green lentils. The rice is nearly gone. We eat a lot of rice. The canned beans have been used & replenished multiple times. The dried beans, not so much. Turns out canned beans are much easier/ faster to prepare.

I don't think there will be mass closures again. The store closings that happen now are not because the corporation cares about health & safety. It is because the management has ignored all safety concerns for so long and so often that too many employees are calling out sick/dead, and they don't have enough human capital to physically run the store that day.

I make sure that I have extra paper towels, Kleenex and tp. I do have extra coffee just in case. But I don’t foresee an extended disruption. There might be temporary shortages of a few things, but I would be surprised if it amounted to more than that.

As for our household, we always have enough food on hand to carry us through awhile. It may not be quick food or fun food, but ylu won't starve here.

I live an hour from the city so certain things are always stocked up on, that we can't get here in town. Especially in the winter. Even things I can buy in town are stocked up on. We are in deep freeze weather now so I don't feel like running off to the city for shopping if I dont have to in -40C or -50 windchill. If I have to go I'll go but I stay stocked up so I don't HAVE to go out in the cold or if the roads are terrible. When I do go into the city again it will be for regular buying. I'm always stocked on things like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, personal care, all pantry items. A deep freeze of stuff. It would be the fresh produce I wouldn't get, which is sad looking and so expensive anyway that would be missing if there was a lacking of workers somewhere along the supply delivery. We shared a 4H steer with my parents this year so we have lots of beef if nothing else. I think there could be closures due to outbreaks in certain stores, it's happened before. Trucking could slow down, it's happened before.

We’ve been more focused on preparing for another freeze event like we had last winter, we were without power for 4 days. So water, firewood, propane have been at the top of our list. In January we will stock some canned and dry goods.

Are these warnings much ado about nothing or are things really going to start shutting down? I suppose it depends on where you (general) live. The orthopedic office I’ve visited twice this month emailed yesterday that patients can no longer bring a guest (except in certain circumstances). And three of their offices have closed until January 6 or 7 - which has to be covid/staffing related. A veterinary referral/emergency animal hospital also emailed yesterday they’re returning to curbside pick-up/drop-off. Some physical therapy groups I’ve been looking into since I need 12 weeks of PT have bolded on their websites that they can do telehealth appointments in some cases. (Some have done that since the beginning of the pandemic but some of the websites have made it more prominent than it was a week or two ago.) A friend’s three relatives who had been very careful until they “had” to attend a wedding all got covid. Our vet’s three kids, one six years old, got covid, though very mild. I think it’s going to get much worse due to the holidays and unmasked and poorly masked people (fit and mask type), and hope that by February the worst will be over.

Two weeks ago I assessed the freezer and bought quite a bit of meat to be sure we were covered through January if we bought nothing else. The pantry is in decent shape but not as stocked up as I got in early 2020. I have several things I want to add to the next pickup order so I have meals planned through most of the month. We don't dine out much anyway and I doubt we will in January.
I don't think the wave has really gotten here yet but then our health department was only open Tues-Thurs this week with one day of testing so who knows? The state doubled its cases yesterday to an all time high. I fully expect January to be rough and then hopefully the surge will pass. We have seen though that it can take some time for supply chain issues to completely straighten out and this doesn't factor in winter weather. Right now, we are having an exceptionally mild winter in our area.

Breaking news! TWO grocery stores in my area do not have arugula. WTF. I declare an arugula shortage! Thanks, Joe Biden! Also, I cleaned out/organized my pantry yesterday, and no one's going to starve here. Even if we have to make meals out of chickpeas and artichoke hearts, we'll be OK.

Here in the UK, hospitals now have special hubs to accommodate those who can not find hospital beds. Councils in some areas are unable to empty bins. People in need are unable to have access to carers. Some foods/drinks are now rationed when we do our online grocery shopping and restrictions limit some quantities of items to two or three.
So these are not just potential future worries but problems that are happening here and now . They are real.
We have stocked up as much as possible.
