I decided to buy new canisters for my baking supplies like flour, sugar, etc. that are a little more space saving. I worked on that cabinet this morning along with my spice pull out cabinet and the 2 bottom corner lazy Susan's. Ended up with things for college DS's apartment, a few things that didn't need to take up kitchen space and could be stored in the basement and things to toss.

Nothing provides a restart for the decluttering/ cleaning process better than a plumbing issue and the need for multiple contractors to be in your home. We had worked hard in the spring and then stalled out. The plumber and entourage got us back on track, especially in our living room and dining room. We're getting there!

I finally started hanging things on my walls. I have a large moving box sitting in the LR that needs to be gone. I'm tired of looking at it.
Updated: I hung my big clock and a bunch of framed pieces. The box is gone!

Today I did a lot around the house, probably to make up for being kinda lazy the past few days.
This morning I cooked and baked a bunch of stuff from the freezer & pantry, as a way to use it up before it gets too old.
My kids & I worked on their room. Took A LOT down to the basement to store for now. They are at that in between age where they still play with toys, but also play videogames. The board games & toys are easily accessible & labeled if they feel like grabbing them, but aren't taking up room in their shared bedroom.
The Legos are all still upstairs, because they are played with daily.
I did a deep vacuum all over.
I was very proud of my youngest while we were going through piles of toys. I ask, "Keep upstairs, take downstairs, toss?" And we zipped though quick, and he tossed a bunch of random Kinder eggs toys, dentist treasure box toys, bits of paper , etc.
We didn't dig everything out of under the bed (to do another day), but the room looks much better.
And I fully admit to myself, and all you peas, that my kids have far, FAR, too many toys.

my week home alone is almost over (DH and DD return tomorrow) - I haven't accomplished as much as I would have liked (rained almost all week so none of the outdoor chores happened).
BUT I swept and organised the utility room off the garage - and put the clamshell cat carrier in the donation pile. I HATE that style carrier and even without it, we have more carriers than cats.
I swept and re-organised the garage - threw out a big bag of trash and broke down the cardboard boxes
I went through my file box - shredded old tax stuff and HSA receipts (older than 7 years) and tossed some manuals for stuff we no longer have. Made enough space that I could move the manuals that came with this house and for the appliances we've replaced here into the file box which emptied another box - YAY
Found the missing two (of three) mini pewter castle pieces - they were my mum's and I have them on my desk. Dusty (our cat) loves them and somehow I've been missing 2 of them for months. One was in the house files, the other behind my CPU.
Alphabetised the fiction books in our library/guest room - found a few duplicates which will either go to my older kids or to donation.

Not much has happened around here lately but bagged up some yarn for a project I know I will never finish and pulled some boxes of foam stamps out to purge. Two office boxes full. Nice and organized and even labeled but I know I will never use them again and want the space. I had to have DS move a bunch of boxes to get them down and now want to go through the other boxes and see if there is anything else that I can purge to. I part of me would like to do a major purge on my craft supplies but it is hard to just donate as all I can see for a lot of it is $$ but at the same time I know I won't use it all and would be happier with less stuff. I did toss some glitter ornaments that I started years ago. I glittered them maybe 7 years ago - they were the cube ones that were going to become Minecraft ornaments. Its not going to happen and I just tossed the bag along with the photos of what they were to look like.
I tossed some other directions for crafts I knew I would never make earlier this week. I have some notebooks in the garage I need to go through as well. I would feel much better with about half the craft supplies I have now but lack the energy to purge them all. I need to the same with books. I mostly read ebooks so no clutter and borrow from the library and get recipes on-line but still have a lot of books and cookbooks.

DH went to the shoe store today and bought a new pair of walking shoes. He came in from the store, put them up and immediately came in my office with the old pair, asking where the donation box was! By jove, I think he is finally trained! . Usually it takes him a while to get around to donating - and not too many years ago he just couldn't be bothered. So those of you with family members who don't want to declutter, there is hope!

I used to feel that way. Now the feeling of being weighed down & my mojo being zapped by these supplies is worse than the guilt for the money spent. Once you get to that point, it will be easy to purge it all.

I tackled my DD's school papers from grades 4-12 this week. I had "organized" them by putting them into (really more like tossing them in the direction of) some magazine holder boxes from the Container Store. This week I sorted them into sets of official papers like gradecards and IEP related materials, writing samples, newspaper clippings, honors and awards, 4-H materials, etc., and then put them back into the magazine boxes. Now to figure out where to store them. I wish we had an actual home office. Oh, and just to be clear, I also left a sizeable pile of junk papers for the recycling man. Woo hoo!

You could try selling - there is a For Sale or Trade board on the GS side or on Facebook Marketplace etc... But I'll agree with **GypsyGirl** - the space - both in your house and in your head - is well worth the effort I think he is finally trained That's awesome!!!

Legacy Girl - well done - do you know if IEP paperwork has a specific "keep until" timeline? I was wondering that as I shredded tax papers today and put the IEP papers back in teh folder for now

I have a child who is 32 and getting state benefits for being a disabled adult. I kept all iep paperwork (not notes) but ieps, work examples, etc. and it was super helpful when I had to get her re evaluated at 27.. no pediatrician notes were available because they destroy records on a time table.. like 5 yrs and I failed to have those notes transferred to an adult doctor.
I had to proved extent of disability before age 18. and I got the state benefits (very hard to get) and ssi for her. and I got her qualified for disability help at college.
so unless there are other circumstances, I would keep at least some of the documentation forever.

Thanks ntsf - I'm glad that having all that paperwork was helpful for you and your child. I'll definitely scan everything if I do decide to get rid of some of it - my child is unlikely to need services as an adult however.

I was wondering that as I shredded tax papers today and put the IEP papers back in teh folder for now Thank you, Linda. DD is dyslexic and she does receive services at her university. I will always keep the paperwork related to her initial diagnosis with a private pediatric neuropsych. But I suspect once she enters the workforce in a few years that I will probably pitch all of the IEPs except for the last/most recent one. For now, all the documentation fit into the space I had available for it (whose organizing philosophy is that -- Peter someone, maybe???), so it can stay.

I added another box of craft supplies. I have a few more to go through but looking at some stuff I know I won’t use and feel ok purging it. I have a long way to go but purging more than I thought originally. Some card kits along with some project life kits I have more but they aren’t in boxes so will be harder to donate. Baby steps … hoping to add more to the boxes in the coming week.

I've been trying to use up consumables this week. My family has a habit of opening a new product right before the old product is finished. And the leaving both in the cabinet/in the shower.
Luckily, I have no brand loyalty. I've knocked out several "one use left" shampoos, conditioners, body washes this week.
And I've been making a point to eat leftovers from the fridge, and meals I've frozen into individual servings.

I purged my clothes today. I was brutally honest with myself about what I wear, and why I don't wear the things I don't.
I tossed/donate-boxed (depending on condition):
Jammy tops with buttons. I'm too big busted for them to lay right.
Anything that doesn't feel right or good. Pilled pj pants. Rough shirt fabric. Things that cling where I don't like.
Any pants or shorts that squeezed. Or were baggy in strange places. Or were too short for my age.
I decluttered about twenty items in total, and now everything I have, I know I like to wear.
I also put all my winter sweatshirts away.
I also found a bag of stashed toiletries (why did I stash them, idk).
Some things are stuff like razors, etc, that I put on the shelf and will be used as needed)
Some are things like one use paper face masks. I put them in the basket right outside the bathroom, and have given myself until the end of summer to use them or lose them.

depends on your child.. but I had high hopes my child would work when she was 18/20... her iq is 140.. as she got older, it became more apparent that she can't work.. right now she takes 1 college class every semester.. working towards degree, but also has nothing else to do and there are no programs for persons like her. her college class is the program. some structure to her life, some purpose.

I don't have a solid list of what I have tossed this week, because it seems to be a thousand small miscellaneous things that belonged to nothing and were only in a drawer or a cabinet because they've lived there forever and blend in after awhile.

I don't have a solid list of what I have tossed this week, because it seems to be a thousand small miscellaneous things that belonged to nothing and were only in a drawer or a cabinet because they've lived there forever and blend in after awhile. Sometimes getting rid of those little things makes a huge difference though! The difference between finding something else easily or not, or closing the drawer easily. Never downplay clearing out those small miscellaneous things! I have reached the point in certain rooms/areas where that is mostly what needs to be done.

This thread made me go want to declutter more.
I went through the kitchen cupboard that houses dishware, glasses, mugs, etc.
It's one of those spaces that has a lot of inaccessible space, that you'd have to move everything that you can see when you open the doors, just to be able to dig it out.
Well, I dug it out.
Tossed six plastic reusable water bottles that haven't been used for years. Tossed four huge plastic glasses.
Moved three items to a donate bag.
I only put things back so that they are visible when you open the doors. The dead space in empty.

I need to get rid of SO MUCH STUFF in the next few days. I've already been trying for a couple of weeks. We are having a houseful of guests next week, and my craft room needs to be a guest room. I HATE throwing stuff out, but I don't have time to try to sell it. I'm giving a lot away in our local Buy Nothing group. As time goes on it is getting easier and easier to let stuff go, though! Maybe when I'm done I'll be brave enough to do a before and after. Probably not, though.

I ordered a larger lateral file.. my file cabinet is stuffed, and I have more I wish to file. it was on sale..so I did it. I got rid of an old bookcase to my son, and he moved another one for me. I went through my dad's printed photos, got rid of a bunch, and pulled all the ones of my sister.. and making an album for her.. so those will leave my house. went out and ordered new shade for old lamp.. so it is not just sitting there not useable.

I got rid of some candy--unfortunately I ate it!! Sorry, I couldn't help myself!! I actually unpacked from a trip and organized a few of my drawers that somehow shrunk while I was gone! I dusted--very much needed--and put my blankets away for the summer.

Hope that your trip was loads of fun and you'll pop in a bit more often! Thank you for this thread. It motivated me to go through two cupboards in the kitchen and then re-arrange them. It is motivating to see what others are accomplishing isn't it! It doesn't have to be a whole room or house to make a difference.
