I’ve been storing my 12x12 papers and card stock horizontally in cubes that I bought from HL 3 or 4 years ago. Each cube has a tray style shelf, which is very helpful. Unfortunately, when stacked, the cube frames expand, and the trays can come out on one side or the other, which is really frustrating and causes issues getting the affected sections of paper out. I usually have to empty the entire cube, carefully reinsert the tray, then put the paper back.
The cubes have more issues the higher they are stacked, but I have no room to expand other than vertically. I currently have them stacked 4 cubes high, but another row higher is needed. HL no longer sells them, and the tray issue would become even worse if I were to add another row, unless I turned them sideways to be vertical.
I want the cube storage from Ikea, but they have no shelves/trays, so I’d either have to store paper vertically and probably put them in 12x12 envelopes for storing, and it would be a lot harder to thumb through the papers horizontally. I worry that vertical storage would bend or warp the papers.
I have a LOT of paper. Yes, I could downsize my collection. No, I don’t want to.
So how do you store your 12x12 papers? Vertically? If so, do they warp enough to be a concern? Is it easy to get out what you want? Storing horizontally definitely seems at a disadvantage when it comes to finding the paper I want, and I would still need one more row higher, regardless. Since the Ikea 5x5 cube storage is a lot sturdier, it seems an advantage, but I’ve never stored paper vertically before.
I see both pros and cons to vertical vs. horizontal storage. What works for you and please explain why?

I store mine vertically and the paper doesn't seem to warp. I like vertical because it's easier to look through, when I tried horizontal I had to pull all the paper out and flip through it but vertically I don't have to pull the paper completely out. I'll post a photo in a few minutes if you'd like.

I store mine vertically and haven’t had issues and I’ve always done it that way. I use storage file bins from the container store and they hold quite a bit depending on the size. I organize them by color and can easily flip through to find what I’m looking for and then for page kits I make I got some pockets made specifically for those from Hobby lobby. Those and random collections I like to keep together in large ziplock bags are also vertical without issue and I “file” them in my cube (kallax)
For me it’s easier to see visually and use. I also feel it store more but that may just because it’s all I’ve done since I haven’t done the other.

What works for you and please explain why? We R Memory Keepers have stacked paper trays that fit in the IKEA Kallax cubes. I have a previous AC version of them that I've been using consistently packed with paper for 5+ years without issue. ETA: They also have a 12-pack set. |

i store vertically in bins where i can stand and leaf through them. i have them sorted by manufacturer.
do they warp? no, there is enough of them standing in a bin that they remain upright.
is it easy to get to? yes, very easy. it's on top of a cabinet at the end of my u-shaped work space. i have more paper stored vertically in various containers inside of a closet and cupboards. i have way too much paper to stack horizontally even in paper trays.

I store vertically and use the Cropper Hopper paper holders to keep manufacturers/themes/colors together. Cropper Hopper changed names I think, I believe a simile product is still made. I like being able to grab a chunk of paper at a time to flip through and the rest stays nice and neat.

I store vertically in cropper hopper paper bins. I believe Totally Tiffany sells these now. They don't warp because the bin is mostly full. I pull out a chunk of paper so I can flip through it to avoid dog-eared corners.
The only paper I store horizontally is when I have a complete line (or almost complete) with the embellishments to match. In that instance I keep them together in an Iris case until it is ready to get mixed in with the rest of the paper.

All of my paper is stored vertically in those Cropper Hopper vertical paper holders inside my IKEA Kallax. Four of the paper holders fit nicely inside each cube.

Mine is stored vertically in deep drawers under my counter. When I had less paper in a drawer I put a heavy square of foam board at the end and braced it with a couple of paper towel rollsto prevent papers from sliding down or.bending.

I believe Totally Tiffany sells these now. They do, and the ones I got fit inside the Kallax, where the cropper hopper ones had to be trimmed ever so slightly. I keep the majority of my paper horizontally in either the 12x13 Sterilite cubes, (with drawers) or Iris containers, but I do have some in the Cropper hopper/Totally Tiffany holders vertically and it hasn't bent because they are full. When they were not full, I put other stuff in them to keep the paper upright. |

Go to your local pizza joint.
My order from Club Scrap came in a heavy duty pizza style box. I broke it down, applied 2 coats of mod podge, 2 coats of paint, and another coat of mod podge. it is now a project box, but could easily become paper storage.

I store my paper in Iris containers that fit 12x12 paper and lay them flat, and stacked on each other. I have one for Christmas/Winter, one for Autumn/Halloween, one for DD and one for DS. Being flat, I dont have to worry about warping. On the top of the paper piles in the containers are embellishments and then the photo Iris containers for smaller embellishments. ETA the are stacked in a cube system that is open. Below is a cube with drawers.

I also use the Cropper Hopper storage files and use them vertically. I have my paper sorted by color and theme. I like that I can just pull out one file and easily page through it. I’ve used this system for at least 12 years and it’s held up very well, through 4-5 moves (including overseas) and the files (and paper!) still look like new. Each folder is full and that keeps the corners from bending.
If you choose this system, each 1/2” file holds about 50 sheets of CS and each 2” file holds about 200 sheets. I have a mix of 1/2” and 2” files and about 12’ of paper.

I store 12x12 paper both ways. Patterned paper in plastic envelopes by manufacturer (vertically). I haven't noticed any bending. I store my paper in the michaels knockoff cubes. Cardstock is horizontal in a rolling storage cart with drawers. Not sure if this will work in the Kallax and hold paper horizontally. I have some paper in Iris containers so that’s horizontal. All the rest of it is vertical. I store it in paper storage envelopes. I organize by collection or brand and I also will make up sort of DIY kits with paper left over from various kits. I don’t have a problem with storing paper vertical. The envelopes keep it in good condition.

I have the Michaels cubes, and store my paper vertically in these, inside the cropper hopper (now Advantus) 2" paper holders. I love this system. I sort by theme, and the 12x15 bags fit nicely inside the cropper hopper/Advantus holders. I built my cube collection over several years and love them, but they don't make the same cubes anymore (I don't think).
Actually, the holders I started with were Advantus, purchased on Amazon and Scrapbook.com. They fit in the 14.25x14.5 cubes without any trimming.
A friend sent me several of her 2" Cropper Hopper paper holders, and those I DID need to trim with some heavy duty scissors, but they fit just fine now.
I have had a few pieces of cardstock bend, that is due to the fact it was the old construction paper type, so it was bending outwards, and got more bent when I slid the neighboring paper holder in and out. I fixed it by taking a spare piece of chipboard (like what you get in a paper order, or the back piece from a paper stack) and putting it in the back to support that paper.
Another more economical vertical paper storage solution is the multi purpose bins from The Container Store, the medium and small (they would be verrrrry heavy if you used the large size and packed it full I think).
A lot of people love these. I didn't like them for my cubes because they flare out slightly at the top, so I couldn't store as much as if I used the Advantus paper holders (since they don't fit snugly side by side). But I think the kallax cubes might have bigger dimensions, so it isn't as big of a deal as it was with my Michaels cubes.

I have the Ikea Kallax and a few of those shelves that msupea posted. You can place them either vertically or horizontally. Each shelf measures 12.5" x 2.25". So you can stack over 2" of paper horizontally and have 5 shelves. Or you can place them in there vertically. I think Ikea's shelving products by far exceed those of Michael's or Hobby Lobby's. Definitely worth the investment if you want something that will last for many years. |

My paper is vertical in the cropper hopper paper holders. Stacked on shelves repurposed from the shop that fit perfectly in the corner of my room. Good luck in figuring out a system that will work for your space!

Vertical in plastic envelopes from Totally Tiffany that are held in cardboard magazine holders, one for patterned papers, one for cardstock. But my paper stash is tiny so I don't know that my experience is very relevant.

I have a lot of cardstock and paper - it would be over six feet if stacked up. All of it is stored vertically in either Cropper Hopper storage or boxes from the post office (I save the ones supplies are delivered in). I believe Cropper Hopper is now known as Storage Studios.

I store all of my paper vertically and definitely prefer it that way for ease of flipping through and retrieving what I need. I store them all in cubes (from Hobby Lobby, so very similar to Michaels) in four different ways:
1. I have a few file folder cubes, so I store paper in hanging file folders (specifically made for those cubes) - I like this the least mostly because those cubes aren’t very well made for the “drawer”.
2. My cubes with dividers (that could be vertical or horizontal) are oriented vertical, with paper in Cropper Hopper magazine style storage - very easy to pull out and get to. The paper I keep here is mostly by manufacturer and collections.
3. Fabric/canvas storage bins (13x13) in an open cube (I didn’t add the inserts)). I can pull out the bin easily to flip through, and the contents are a bit more protected from dust and pet hair. Love this method. I mostly have my themed (seasonal, holiday, everyday) in these bins.
4. Stacked vertically in the open cube - it’s full so no worry of bending. I mostly did this because I didn’t have another fabric bin, then just left it that way. It’s all my “boy” themed stuff, by collection, so not a lot of loose papers (but there are some).
I do keep specific project in Iris bins and Super Satchels, but that’s mainly for taking to crops and not permanent storage.

I’m going to buck the trend here - I store in the plastic stackable trays they have at my local scrapbook shop horizontally in ikea units, and again horizontally in my scrap box rotating tower, where i use the scrap box shallow clear trays on the smallest shelf setting for scraps and then I added more of the stackable trays in the space underneath for my themed papers (Christmas, school etc.) I used the vertical storage on the tower for my different types of page protectors and everything is stored in rainbow order 😁 I don’t get kits, I just get random pieces of collections and scrap by colour so am not as concerned about keeping collections together etc

I store mine vertically and have always stored it that way. I will agree with everyone above. I store it in a cube type container. I put a stack of about 5 or 6 rectangles of foam core glued together, about the size of a 2x4, behind the paper to form a barrier so the paper doesn't push all the way to the back of the cube. I store printed paper by designer and cardstock by color.

I prefer vertical but most of it is horizontal right now. Hoping to change that when I get my craft room figured out. I’m stuck on overall configuration to maximize the space, so I’m asking my husband to help me finally.

I have paper stored both ways, horizontal and vertical. I find the paper that is stored vertically is much easier to get to, and easier to look through. For horizontal storage I have a stacking plastic tray system that I bought from an LSS and numerous IRIS containers stacked on top of my Kallax. For vertical storage I have some Cropper Hopper storage boxes, some cardboard ones from Totally Tiffany, and other paper in these wider Fold n' File containers. The wider file containers fit two side by side in each cube of my Kallax, and I find that they are tall enough my paper does not flop over. I do have enough stash to keep them quite full, though. |

Thank you, I appreciate everyone’s comments. For the short term, I think I will turn my Hobby Lobby cubes so that the trays are vertical, and will store my papers vertical, with some chipboard here and there. I was hoping to get the Ikea cube shelves sooner than later, but we have a plumbing/sewer issue that just happened, and it is probably going to be an expensive repair. New shelves will have to wait, but I can at least adapt what I have for now. I’ll reorganize and go vertical. And maybe, just maybe, as I go through my papers, I’ll even pare them down a bit. No promises on that score, though.

I do both. I prefer to store them vertically. I don't care about bent edges since I rarely do full size 12x12 pages. It's easier for me to pull out a container of them and look through. However, the ones that I like have doubled in cost.
There was a store in my area getting rid of stacks of display dynamic trays for $1.00 each, so that's how the rest are stored. As much as I dream of a perfectly organized room with everything streamlined, I'd rather buy fun scrappy things instead. 
Oh, and I forgot about Iris Cases. Some are stored in there too. It's not a bad system because all papers are in the same area.

I love being able to pull whichever ones have the stuff I want to use out and flip through it on my desk rather than going back to the cupboards. I have one that I use for large scraps, and one that I’ll tuck in-progress stuff into so it’s easy to keep stuff tidy/organized. Have never had any problems with warping and find with the layout of my cabinets (not Kallax ones), I can actually store more if I keep the paper vertically rather than horizontally. Keep my chipboard and sticker sheets in one and thickers will fit two across in them too. |
