I have always stored vertically too…no issues. I use the Advantus/Cropper Hopper paper storage things.
IKEA does make dividers for the Kallax now. My store has been out of stock. There are two different inserts. One divides a cube in half and the other into four (I believe) slots. I’ve seen reports on an organization fb group that some stores are finally getting them back in stock.

I also store them both ways, PP vertical and card stock horizontal. No real reason. I just didn't have enough space to store them all one way, so it seemed like a good way to split it up. I used to have everything stored in Sterilite 12x12 drawers, but switched the PP to vertical when I saw an opportunity to do so (which freed up some drawers for me too! )

Paper is my favorite, most abundant, & most used supply. I've stored paper vertically in the original Cropper Hopper Paper Holders/Pouches for almost two decades! This system allows quick & easy access to peruse, insert, & remove individual sheets. HTH & you find a storage solution that works well for you.

Another vertical stacker - PP in Cropper Hopper pockets I light at least 15 years ago, and CS in wider Target Itso bins (discontinued). Both have pretty much filled 2 cubes in a 2x2 Kallax, so no worries about floppy paper.

Vertically, for a couple reasons. Biggest reason is that with the wheelchair, stacking stuff is problematic. I can't necessarily reach as high as most adults. The bigger issue, though, is that my space is better suited to vertical.
I have a bureau that's meant for clothes, and I have my Crop Hopper paper holders in it. Well, the thing has drawers, and the drawers have clothes. But the cupboard portion as paper. I'll take a picture one day soon.
I also have 3 cubes from Thirty-One that I use. One is for Stampin' Up, one is for 'Paper I Hoard Because the Companies are Gone' (i.e. An Ode to Basic Grey & Scenic Route') and one for theme paper.
I may do a layout about the 3 cubes.

I store horizontal in my Scrap 'n Cube paper cubes. LOVE them but they closed during COVID I believe. I have many, many pieces of theirs. Anyway, StampnStorage sells something similar. I will link it. Here is a picture of mine: StampnStorage Units

I store mine in bins, in a 4 cube tall bookcase on its side that hubby added wheels to.
I keep each color/theme in a thick plastic record sleeve and then have dividers. I've used this for a few years now and it works well for me. I can grab the pack I want and have everything I need at once.

I wish they would make them again.

Those kids are now 12 and 15 so I morphed the cubes and bins for clothing and linen closet storage years ago, and the bins have slowly shifted from closets into my craft area
