So I go to the doctor today for regular check up.
I’m of course wearing a mask.
Reception says I have to wear one of their blue paper surgical ones.
I said that I also have a K95 one in my pocket that I could wear. (Non-argumentative)
She said nope it had to be one of theirs.
So I put it on, it had a weird smell, and I was in the office for about 1-1/2 hrs waiting, my appointment, getting labs done.
I take off their mask as I’m getting into my car, and my face feels weird, tingly, itchy…
I look in my mirror and my face is red and itching in the shape of the mask!!!
So here I am, almost 19 hours later looking like I had Botox injections—my lips are swollen, itchy and my face still red and bumps!!!
I have a call into dr’s office, they won’t respond until tomorrow.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this from wearing a surgical mask??
I’ve been diligent wearing a mask, have had both cloth and K95 marks, but this is the first time I’ve had a reaction!!!

I have not but my dd has! Her work-issued masks (hospital) are doing the same thing!
Yours sounds worse, though. She’s got the itchy bumps and her eyes are itching too. No lip swelling, though.

While my mil was in the hospital, I forgot my mask in the car one day and grabbed one of the hospital masks. It smelled horrible, and I opted to go back out to my car to get my own mask. I could feel tingling creeping on me, but I didn't have it on long, like 4 minutes tops.

You know they are going cheap for the give aways..
When I went to after hospitalization outpatient PT, they gave us nice masks each and every time. But that was summer of 2020.

Some of them do have a smell when you open the package. The smell disappates after a time

Sure hope you have taken pictures to document it!! Sorry you are suffering. Definitely document so that you don’t have to wear one next time. I’m wondering if Benadryl cream would help. A pharmacist could suggest something if you don’t want to wait.

Take pictures!
I remember picking one up in the summer somewhere as a free one, and it stunk. It was brand new, wrapped, and just horrible smelling. I ripped that off quick, not knowing what it was. I bet it would have done the same thing you’re describing.
I hope it heals fast for you. I would call them and let them know that there is potentially a problem with these masks. I bet others have had the same problem

Oooh yea. All surgical masks are not created equal. We’ve had quite the selections. Some smell, some itch, some don’t even fit.

Some we get are awful. We are required to wear surgical masks, no fabric, but the quality is so spotty I buy my own black masks on Amazon.

Gahhh!!! Still itching and swelling!
I’m laying here with ice packs on my lips and face!
I did email the doctors office photos of my mouth and face.
I cannot believe they wouldn’t let me wear my k95 one.

When I went with my mom to the hospital I had KN95 masks for both of us. Upon arrival they asked us to wear theirs. I said I thought my mask was more effective and they said I could wear theirs over mine which is what we ended up doing.
I’m sorry you had such a severe reaction!

I have a co-worker who says she reacts to certain masks because of her latex allergy. Could this be your case aswell?

I’ve had a few places that insist that it wear their masks—mostly in medical settings. I just put it on over my cloth mask. I’m really sensitive to chemicals and I’m wearing FFP masks 100% of the time now, so I think they are more effective than the cheap blue masks.

I work in a hospital, and it is the same mask for ALL employees, visitors and patients. The flip side of this is that masks like everything these days are effected by supply chain issues....Our masks have changed multiple times during the pandemic, all related to what is available.

Ugh, I hope your face is feeling better today. Have you taken an antihistamine? When I am having a reaction I take an antihistamine and an H2 blocker (like Pepsid) to control the reaction better. I had chronic autoimmune hives for 8 long years. I have done this too. One hospital tried to argue with me, but I have a ton of allergies and know I don’t reactt to the KN95s I buy. I stood my ground and they eventually let me wear both.

I hope you’re feeling better.
I’ve been constantly in/out of the hospital since Thanksgiving and they make you wear their mask. They don’t care if I have a N95/KN95 mask or not. I always put ‘their’ mask over whatever I’m wearing. I never put their mask on first, made that mistake once and I won’t do it again, it smelled funky and I had a rash after. As someone said, they’re going thru a ton of masks, I’ve gotta believe their cheap ones.

Hope your doing better. Did your doctors office answer you? Just to try a hydrocortisone cream! I cannot believe it’s still bugging me around my lip line, corners of my mouth. I’ve been loading on cream and coconut oils and it dries out and feels crackly with an hour!

I haven't worn one that long to know. I do know that once when I got to work, I couldn't find my mask in my purse as I stood outside in the cold. So I grabbed one of the disposable surgical masks at the entry and put it on. I wore it and it was so itchy. I wore it for maybe an hour and then decided to dig through my purse again and thankfully found one of my cloth masks.
I hope the doctor's office listens to you and doesn't force others to wear that (especially when they have a K95, wth?).

They want to be sure you are wearing a clean mask. DH wears a mask into the dialysis clinic, then they hand him a new one.
Next time wear the new one over your KN95.

they said I could wear theirs over mine What was their reasoning for this? Part of their reasoning may be to avoid people wearing a 'fake' mask. The ones that have holes but look like they're actual masks. Definitely put their crappy mask over your own. 💙
