This is a spinoff of recent threads linking to upcoming product releases. When new papercrafting products are posted on a manufacturer's website or social media, at your favorite online store, in a thread here, included in your LSS's emailed newsletter, or wherever/however your view them, what is your approach to peruse, assess, & determine which papers/embellishments/tools/etc. make your wish list?

It's definite yes, maybe or a definite no.
Yes and maybe, gets put in the online cart or booked marked. I have both online stores (cherry on top and scrapbook, com) that I order from book marked, and things I want to order go there. That way when I am ready to order, I can just click the link to that item and add it.
When I am ready to place an order I look at the bookmarks and at the cart, and sometimes the "maybe" items get deleted or not added. Sometimes, when I take another look at something it's not as cute or I don't like it as much as I did on first glance. Sometimes a maybe becomes a yes. Sometimes the price is a deciding factor.
I know what styles, colors, and type of products, etc... that I love in regards to scrapbook products and I know what I don't like so it's usually fairly easy for me to purchase products.

If I really love a collection I decide if it would actually be useful to me. For example, all the recent farmhouse collections. I want to buy them because they’re so cute but I’m not scrapping anything farmhouse related. Then I think about whether or not I already have something very similar to it in my stash or if it would work with something in my stash. Then I decide how much of the collection I’ll buy - a collection kit with extra embellishments and extra papers or just a few papers and one pack of die cuts.
But sometimes I go straight from A to Z. Don’t care if it’s useful or if I have something that looks just like it. I don’t feel like being reasonable. I just buy it because I like it. It just depends on my mood.

I also decide pretty quickly if something is a yes, no, or maybe. I look firstly at the colour combo and overall aesthetic, if the collection appeals at a glance then I'm more likely to open all the thumbnails and really look at the product. When the collections are first discussed here I'll often say I like things I know I have no intention of buying.
When the lines are actually released and in stock at sb.com I'll look at them again. In theory I already know which parts of the collection I was most interested in so I'll often just look for those bits, but occasionally I'll open all the thumbnails for a closer look. At this stage I'm looking to see what fills gaps in my stash, how much of an embellishment pack I will realistically use, or what pieces I just absolutely adore and really, really want. I add everything that passes these benchmarks into my cart. I then treat this as my wish list as I only place a small number of orders each year, so I revisit it regularly, deleting the things that no longer excite me.

I get emails of new products from my favorite companies. I look through them, and I consider first, how much I like it, second, do I already have something similar, and finally, I decide whether or not I really need it, and/or how likely am I to really use it.
I don’t buy much these days, because my stash is large enough that not many items make it through the criteria above.

I make a quick judgement when I first see a collection previewed. If it fits the themes and patterns and icons I usually use, I message my LSS to see if they will be ordering it in. Colour is another factor. And usability (some neutrals or B side patterns that don't overwhelm my photos). If yes, I will either wait to see it IRL or ask them to set it aside for me to pick up when it comes in. If no, I will keep an eye out for that collection if I happen to visit a different LSS and may pick up some or all of it there.
Sometimes I am unimpressed by a line until I have seen it used, either on line or in person. When my Pinterest feed was filled with SU! Cards, I contacted my rep and ordered the supplies I “needed” so I could make my own. Or I will search for it and sometimes order from SB dot com.

first off - do I like it? could be colours, theme, images...
and if so - the collection kit? something else? or just one or two papers?
Would I reasonably use it? are the colours/themes ones I scrap with?
And do I have similar already in sufficient quantity? This one is usually the one that switches me to a no or a not now.
The only collection recently that really was a yes all the way through was Photo PLay Notting Hill - I love the theme and the colours. We're a family of bookworms and I have nothing similar (book related) in my stash. So that one is sitting in my cart waiting...

I have in the past been a total impulse buyer. I rarely buy whole collections but just what ‘speaks’ to me. 🙄 that results in lots of paper because let’s face it’s lot of it is pretty and appealing - that’s what it’s made to be.
So then I started inserting a question in the process after I see it, like it & decide it appeals to me I now try to think what am I using that for in the next month. It’s sort of working. As in I have used ( at least some ) of the paper I’ve bought in the last year. ( I still have an issue with reuseable tools & sales ) but some of that paper has been pads & I may never use the whole pad despite using the part I wanted immediately.
Right now, I’m trying to convince myself that I don’t need anything. So far successfully. So my current question is do I need right now & do I want to mice it when I move? Apparently I don’t like moving so that questions puts me off nearly everything

If I like it, I buy it. I tend to buy lines- not every paper or embellishment, but a lot of it. A line speaks to me or it doesn't. My only exception is Reminisce. I'll buy an odd paper from them now and then. I also look at do I have a line in my stash that is similar or do I already have that theme covered. I don't need any Valentine paper and I don't need anymore July 4th or St. Patrick Day Paper. I'm pretty well covered on some other themes at the moment. I have way too much Autumn themed stuff but for some reason it keeps calling me.

I love this thread, PaperAngel ! It's very timely given everything new coming out and I love hearing everyone's thought process on how they shop. I used to buy whole collections almost without exception, and two sheets of each paper at that! Needless to say after over 20 years of scrapbooking I have SO MUCH STUFF! Most of it is paper. I am currently "chilly" on pattern paper, so I am being very careful about what I buy. As I look at these new collections I am focusing on the embellishments and am asking myself if the purchase will help me to use some of my existing (especially older) stash. I like to layer embellishments and make clusters, so I feel a bit of a creative block when the only thing I have to work with is patterned paper. I'm actively looking for coordinating embellishments that will work with several older collections of paper. As I buy new stash (especially paper) I am trying very hard not to buy whole collections (with some rare exceptions) and am really evaluating whether I have a plan for the paper or not. As much as I like to buy paper to scrapbook things that might happen, I am trying very hard not to do that anymore.

I too used to be a major impulse buyer, if I liked it I bought it with little regret. After a few major purges over the years and seeing things I just "had to have" get purged because they no longer brought me joy, I have become a lot more conscious of what I buy. I no longer buy entire lines of things unless the entire line is something I will for sure use (I have not bought an entire line of any paper for probably 5 years now). I also haven't bought much 12x12 paper because I was not using it. I've changed over to pocket scrapbooking and smaller albums mainly for space reasons. If a line or parts of a line speak to me, I will add them to my scrapbook . com cart and if I'm feeling in the scrappy purchasing mood I'll go check the cart. I will then look at my saved items and if they're in stock I may buy them or most of the time I just keep them there (for example, I've had Pink Fresh Keepin' It Real stickers and chipboard stickers and Simple Stories Quarantine collections in my cart since last year and still haven't bought them.) I mainly keep them in my cart hoping they'll go on clearance at some point, and if they don't and they are out of stock oh well.

I tend to be an impulse buyer. If I like it, I buy it without much thought as to what I will use it for. I only have a couple of big "projects" (childhood/travel). Most of my scrapbooking is whatever interests me in the moment so buying things for specific projects doesn't work with how I create. I like having lots of choices to pick from when I create, so buying things I like without a specific purpose gives me those choices. In the past I typically bought full collections - 1 of all the papers (or 2 if I really love a couple of them) and most of the embellishment offerings. I typically don't buy the stamps/dies if offered and I stopped buying the chipboard stickers as I prefer the other types of dimensional stickers (puffy, foam).
I'm very slow to use the products I buy. For example, I have collections from the 2019 Christmas releases that I haven't used yet, and it's not because I haven't done any Christmas crafting.
All that to say, I'm trying to change my buying habits. I joined in with the peas that are chilly/frozen this year in an effort to use up some stuff without buying more. I did do a final SB.com order at the end of December. Instead of buying ALL the things from the two collections I purchased (VB Fernwood & SS Happy Hearts) I was intentional in the papers I selected (I don't need 3 light aqua colors - I picked the one; I don't love orange - I bought none). So instead of having 24 Fernwood papers, I have 15.
I use the ColorMyLife app to keep track of collections I own, and I use the different types of wishlists at SB.com to keep track of things I'm interested in buying.

Most of the time I’ll decide whether it’s aesthetically appealing to me and my style. Then I think if I have an actual use for it, especially with themed collections since I tend to be liters with my paper and embellishment use.
Sometimes I’ll look specifically for a topic like basketball since I have current events to scrap and will at times settle (mainly on color scheme) if there’s one I can use most of what I’d buy.
I do buy less now than in the past. I’m more picky about how much of a collection since I tend to overbuy and underuse.
When I can I try to see how others are using it which also gives me a better look at the colors since they tend to be off (or I feel they are) in manufacturers pictures. I’ll sometimes buy something I wouldn’t normally based on how someone else used it and scraplift it.

I don't think I've ever purchased a whole collection before. I only buy what I think I might use, and that's primarily paper rather than embellishments.
I don't think I'm looking for anything in particular, but I rule out what won't work for me pretty quickly.
If I'm buying online, I don't want anything I can get at JoAnn's for a fraction of the price, so that's most AC lines and anything I'd be buying for a tone on tone B side. Don't get me wrong, I'll buy a lot, but I won't spend.
I usually don't want papers with a large object illustrated (like Shimelle's treehouse or Vicki's sunset). I tend to use a lot of photos, so it makes it difficult to design a layout around. I also usually don't want papers with a too small repeating design. I prefer a larger pattern that can be understood in the outer 2 inches of the page.
I try not to buy themed papers, I don't like orange, and I don't need any more pink.
Surprisingly, that still leaves a lot. If I like it, it goes in my ACOT cart, and then I'll place my pre-order (save 20%) for as much as I can before the shipping jumps above $3.99. I always have too little or much in there, so I'll have to make some decisions about what to cut or whether I love certain papers enough to place the order. I guess that's it.

I just found Club Scrap. I was captured by the Dec issue, got 2 sets and a bunch of extras. I also bought Jan set. I pay extra because after looking at the past 3 years I saw only one set I might have bought. It's still available but I'm not that wild about it. I have not committed to buying a bunch of them.

I've been scrapping so long, I rarely buy new releases unless there is something very unique about them. I enjoy browsing, but actual purchasing rarely happens. When I do decide to add to my stash I typically buy from sites like scrapbooking for less or peachy cheap. I'm not picky.

There are so many new releases in the world of digital scrapbooking, and I have such a huge stash, that I have become a bit more discerning with what I buy.
The first thing to catch my eye is the colours. If I absolutely love the colour scheme it goes straight into my cart.
Next I will look at the papers. If there are some unique patterns, especially mixed media, that I don't already have dozens of, AND I like the colours, then I will probably buy it.
If the colours are nice and the patterns are similar to what I already have in my stash, but there are some new and unique elements (embellishments) that I love, then I will probably buy it.
Most of what I buy are kits, so co-ordinating papers and elements. Every now and then I will buy a bundle which also includes journal cards and alpha, sometimes PS styles, brushes, mixed media etc.

In skimming the thread, I'm not sure I do evaluate. Basically, if I like it, and I have enough space for it, I buy it. I don't worry about whether I have something similar, or how I'll use it. If I like it, I'll figure that out. That all said, I'm getting a lot more picky as I've been scrapbooking longer. I haven't bought Bella Blvd or Echo Park in ages, because it's not my style anymore, and it's starting to look the sane to me. I do love Carta Bella (which I know is part of Echo Park, but I think of it separately).
I guess the one criteria would be I don't buy individual papers anymore. If I don't like it enough to buy a collection pack, I don't buy it.
I also have to like it enough that I'm willing to put it to the 'two in, one out' test. As in, say I love a Simple Stories collection. If there are 8 double sided papers I like (I'm not counting cut aparts for the purposes of this) I need to find 8 other papers to add to my garage sale bin. The don't have to be the same company, unless that company's paper holder is full. If I hate the cut aparts & don't think I'll use them, that can be a deciding factor when choosing between two collections.
And I now limit how many Christmas collections I let myself get. I think I stick to two; one more serious/preferably faith based, and more 'kid friendly.
Editted to add: I am generally no longer a 'theme'y scrapper. So those types of collections generally don't appeal to me. Even if I'd take a photo/scrap something from Canada Day, I don't particularly want Canada themed paper for it.
I'm lucky in that most of the time, the collections I won't use don't tend to appeal to me. A good example would be the farmhouse stuff. It's almost like my subconscious can think ahead & realize I won't end up using it, and so that translates to 'I don't like that.' I think that's how the 'check the cut aparts first' thing came to be.

Over the years, I have a couple of habits - good and bad - for buying. I typically buy collections for very specific projects because that helps me with impulse buying. However, I can easily over buy a collection or if I discover something new I like - like I went crazy on sequins and misc shaker pocket items last year and distress oxides over the past 2 months. I like buying collections and complementary cardstock because it helps me get a project done. I will one off buy for specific needs - like I need paper in yellows/blacks, or paper with kites, etc., but I have learned over time that I do better with a collection for a specific project.
There are definitely brands I like and am loyal to for all around products- Ali Edwards, Crate Paper, Carta Bella. Then other brands for certain purposes and things - Heidi Swapp Stamps, Doodlebug, Simple Stories, Paper Person, Elle's Studio, Felicity Jane, Distress Oxides. I do love a good textured patterned paper. But I am working on a Wedding Shower and scrapbook for the shower and the best set of collections to work with were Echo Park, so I bought 2 patterned paper packs + matching cardstock and I'll make it all based on those. It is just more efficient for me that way. I don't love the texture, but it suites my project.
I definitely lean towards cleaner lines and simpler pages these days.

I don't have a particular process, lol. I am on a budget so I basically buy things if it is cheap and I like it. That's it.

I rarely buy when something first comes out. Admittedly, I might miss out on lots of stuff that could have been cool to have, but there is always such a glut of options, that I always know there will be something, somewhere, to fit the bill.
When I do see a product or line that I must have, I write it on a Post It and tape it to the wall above my scrap desk. Then buy it when it becomes available.

I don't evaluate.. which is the problem 🙃
Is it cute? Do I like it? Onto window shopping/putting into carts/seeing prices and shipping.
Sometimes I think about it for a day or two.. then inevitably shrug and say YOLOOOOOOOOO and hit buy.

Well, first, I do like to look at new products and collections. Even if they are not something I will buy or use. I can like stuff, even if it's not my style. That being said, when it comes to buying stuff, I'm pretty impulsive. If I like it, I buy it. Sometimes full collection, sometimes just an item or two. It's kind of whatever speaks to me. Occasionally I will buy themed stuff with a specific project in mind, but usually I just get what I like. Seeing other people use things-especially things like dies, stencils, inks, etc, makes me buy stuff I may not have otherwise. I don't know what to do with a lot of stuff until I see others use it!
