Well darned if I can't find any freezers that are NOT frost free around here. Any site I've gone to (our usual appliance place, lowes, home depot etc) don't have any listed that are not frost free. A few offer a "quick freeze" option - a button you can press after you load it to quickly freeze things. But most are frost free. Sigh
We’ve never had an issue with things in it getting freezer burn if they are packaged correctly. Back in 2014 we celebrated our 25th anniversary and had leftover cupcakes and a whole sheet cake that we never cut into. I froze them all, then once frozen solid I wrapped the cupcakes individually with Press N Seal then popped them back into the plastic clamshells from Costco. I did the same thing with the cake, froze it solid, wrapped it tightly with plastic wrap and put the plastic lid back on the tray it came in. Six months later, I thawed out that cake and we ate it for my birthday and it was just as fresh and delicious as the day we bought it the previous summer! It was totally fine, not dried out or anything. The cupcakes we would pull out one or two at a time, thaw them out and eat them when we wanted a treat. I think I ate the last one FOURTEEN MONTHS LATER, and it was still perfectly fine with no loss of quality or funky taste, no freezer burn or anything. All were kept toward the middle bottom of that big upright freezer and we had no issues whatsoever.
When we get our meat from the butcher, it all comes tightly wrapped in plastic then wrapped in plastic coated butcher paper and it’s frozen rock solid. Some of the roasts and cuts that we use less frequently would be the last things cooked maybe as much as two years later, and again, no issues with freezer burn because it was all properly wrapped first.
