I get my spices from them almost exclusively, but I unsubscribed from their emails a while ago. It was just too much at one point and I needed less noise in my life.

I try to avoid extreme political views. I read some of them, but others, I stop reading if it is too adversarial.

I started buying from Penzeys years ago because I loved their spices, but I’ve stayed for their politics. If a business can advertise that they’re Christian-run, then Penzeys can advertise that they’re a bunch of radical leftist hippies. Everyone has a target audience.

They've never hid their politics and quest for social justice so it's no surprise to me. Plus I agree with much of what they stands up for so no, it doesn't bother me.
Their spices are so much better than most regular store bought spices that it's crazy. Who knew that a tsp of "this" vs a tsp of "that" makes so much of a difference. Good stuff.

His political diatribes are way too wordy. Heaping tablespoons, when pinches would work better.

I felt like that email was a bit much, had that been a republican sending an email saying something as derogatory about democrats it would have made the nightly news. What does everyone say about kindness and putting everyone in the same basket? I just feel like it was a little to far over the edge. I try to not deal with the far left or the far right and engage in the behavior of either of those sides. As long as there is that type of anger on EITHER side I don't think we will ever find a common ground of being nice to each other.

He is definitely on the Keith Olbermann side of the spectrum. That store is one of my happy places. I restocked over $200 of spices right before they switched back to curbside only a couple weeks ago.
At this point he has long ago lost the consumers who won't buy from him because of his political views so he can say the quiet things as loudly as he wants.

I try to avoid extreme political views. I read some of them, but others, I stop reading if it is too adversarial. So you consider equality in voting rights an extreme political view? Are you saying you're happy with the status quo? How is change to happen if people just sit in their wingback, pinky raised, holding a teacup, stammering ironically It's too adversarial, people just need to be nice and care about each other? Remove the scales from your eyes, people. As has been said ad nauseam on these pages, there is no moral equivalency here.

For those who don't receive Penzeys emails, the first part of this one is a promotion where some spices are discounted and proceeds from their sales will be donated to BLM. Then, the closing paragraphs:
I'm not sure what in that could be construed as "far left." Racial equality and voting rights really shouldn't be partisan issues. Perhaps what people are really offended by is that it doesn't mince words in calling people out for their choices.
Anyway, Bill from Penzeys has clearly made a calculated choice to attract some customers and repel others, as is his right. It hasn't seemed to hurt his business so far. There was recently a minor kerfuffle here in Houston about a restaurant in a very blue part of town (not far from our Penzey's store, BTW) that chose to advertise on its sign that masks aren't required "unless you look like Nancy Pelosi." Clearly the business owners have the right to post that on their sign; whether it was smart given the neighborhood their business is in remains to be seen.

Good for them! I buy on line but a couple stores (NoVA and MD) aren’t far and I love smelling the spices - like differences in cinnamons. (The spices available to smell aren’t for sale.) When I go into stores again (covid) they’re on my list. The NoVA one may have curbside only right now.
I like knowing where business owners stand. Then I know who not to buy from (Hobby Lobby.)

I try to avoid extreme political views. I read some of them, but others, I stop reading if it is too adversarial. That’s the thing, though. Voting should be easily accessible to everyone who is eligible. That’s the opposite of extreme. Making voting more difficult or impossible is what should be adversarial.

I haven’t purchased from them for awhile, so that’s probably why I’m not receiving their emails.
Are used to love to go to the one in Indianapolis when my sister lived there. It was in the same shopping center with Trader Joe’s. We’d also make a Costco run at the same time. The perfect trifecta. We now have our own Costco and Trader Joe’s, plus my sister moved here closer to me. I really need to go check my spice drawer and see if I need anything.
People love to buy from Chick-fil-A and hobby lobby because they are Christian. I see shopping at Penzeys no differently. They support what I believe. So I’m happy to support them.
If it weren’t for the fact that I mostly stay out of the political posts, I would happily share the Trump loving emails that are so full of crap that I get on a daily basis. But I won’t do that. To each his own.

They’re not extreme views, if we are simply decent people, who care about fairness and equality and having a viable, functioning democracy.

Love Penzeys and everything they stand for! The spices are outstanding and I won't use any others in my cooking. The fact that he is bold and pushes for social justice makes the spices even better!

I buy from Penzy’s and Hobby Lobby. I don’t feel my boycotting would impact anyone but me. I don’t see it as boycotting, since I agree with you - my puddly purchases don’t mean anything. It’s more about aligning with my beliefs, regardless of outcome. And saying it. Reading an article about the hostages in the Texas synagogue led to searching on Elie Wiesel. This quote popped up: “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must—at that moment—become the center of the universe.” [Elie Wiesel in Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech 12/10/86.] Of course that’s different than not buying a pen. It just fits into the same broad category [for me], ranging from the tiniest, even inconsequential behaviors to the big stuff.

It’s more about aligning with my beliefs, regardless of outcome. And saying it. Agree with this completely. It's not about my craft money doing Hobby Lobby any harm if I spend it at Michaels or Joanns instead. It's about ME feeling better about not spending money with people who are openly bigoted and hypocritical.
