The other day while running errands dh and I ran into one of our son's former lacrosse coaches. He had a huge black eye (looked like someone had hit him in the eye with a lacrosse ball). We asked him what happened and he said he was traveling for work and in Houston. He was attacked by two guys playing this game. One distracted him while the other punched him in the eye trying to knock him out. Coach is a big guy and wasn't completely knocked out, but knocked to the ground and pretty dazed. The police told him this was a common thing. They are supposed to film it and post it online.
Is it common in your area? Know anyone who's been attacked?

I've heard about it but don't know anyone who has been a victim. It's so disgusting.

I heard about this last year on the old peas board, I think? Then it was everywhere on FB, and it's been awhile since I've heard anything about it. I haven't known anyone personally who has been attacked, though. I can't believe there are people who think this is fun, or okay???

It's been around for a while. Actually, it went around in the 80s (I remember one kid getting hit and he went completely out, pissed his pants and everything, it was awful and the kid who did it hadn't thought about this happening and he felt terrible), but we didn't have any way to film it undercover or post it online, obviously! Which is probably why it thankfully didn't really turn into the malicious thing it is now, back then it was just boys (friends) being stupid punching each other.
This go around got lots of press and airtime last year, and I remember pea threads about it, too. Nothing new under the sun. Just new ways to record it and share it,I guess.

Yes, it is an assault and has been going on for quite some time. I believe I read it some time ago, that Jews living in New York, maybe Brooklyn area were targeted so it wasn't random but a hate crime. It is not a game by any means.
We've had many cases in Philadelphia which were caught on surveillance video.

Yes, I've heard of it. Really restores your faith in humanity...not. Yet another thing I just do not understand.

I remember reading about it on the old Pea site. Since I haven't heard much about it lately I had hoped/thought it was over, I guess not

It was popular and talked about a lot a year or so ago.
Now it seems passé in most areas.

While I don't know anyone personally that this happened to, an incident did happen at the shopping center where the Walgreens I frequent is. (And consequently, my scrapbook store just moved to.) But that was about a year ago.

I haven't been made aware that it has happened around here, thank goodness.
