We have a powerful hood fan and the amount of grease that thing collects is amazing. It's a bi$ch to clean, but I do have to say my kitchen cabinets never feel grimy. How often, if ever, do you clean your hood fan?

When we were choosing our hood/fan dh wanted one that looked much “cooler” with baffles. It was super powerful. The sales person explained it did look really nice but was harder to clean. I told dh if we got that one he had to clean it and he agreed. 😂 I would remind him and he did it about 2x a year or more if I noticed it needed it.

I haven't, I rarely cook anymore and rarely anything fried. How do you clean it? What do you use, I mean? DS just moved back in and he's already fried up a few pork chops and got grease everywhere.
I remember trying to clean that thing in my last house when I cooked every day. It was never clean enough to my liking.

Our stove doesn’t have a range hood over it.

I don’t make it a secret that I hate kitchening and spend as little time in there as possible. Googling, it looks like it’s something that pops up on your stove when you cook? If that’s so, I definitely don’t have one.

DH has these wipes to remove grease so he cleans the exposed parts of the hood with that. With the removable blower shield and housings, I usually wipe out whatever grease has collected and scrub it clean with dish soap. This time around I used the Dawn spray and it worked wonderfully.

Now my house cleaner cleans it every week (or whenever they come).

I do have a ceiling fan in the kitchen. Does that count, lol? My stove isn’t against a wall, it’s on a bar that comes out perpendicular to the wall. My kitchen is a U shape. Along the actual wall is the sink and a counter. So I guess I don’t know how a vent at the stove would vent to outside, if that makes sense.

I never used the hood in my previous home and I didn't want anything over the island and didn't see any sense in having a down draft vent. I cook almost every day.

I don't think I have ever cleaned the fan--the blades of the fan iteself. I do clean the metal air filters that keep that exhaust fan invisible.

I clean mine once a month. I bought a Bissell hot shot steamer and it’s the best purchase I have ever made (next to my vacuum sealer)

Mine does not have the fan visible - and no parts that I can see that can be taken apart. I only clean the exterior.

Do I have to clean it if I don’t use it?
I cook every day, but very rarely use the range hood fan - most of what I cook on the stove top is in water or is stirfried (or scrambled eggs sometimes). We almost never have shallow fried food and never have deep fried.

And we cook every day, multiple times a day.

That’s one of their biggest pros… they’re way easier to clean than a mesh filter. I throw mine in the dishwasher a couple of times a year. This house didn’t have a vent hood in the kitchen, and the ceiling above the island was *nasty.* (The rest of the house was immaculate… like, my home inspector actually commented on how clean it was.) We remodeled, of course, and I would never not have one.

Now I’m standing here shining a flashlight at the ceiling over the stove. It’s not dirty. But, we have high ceilings and, like I said, a ceiling fan, so maybe that’s enough?

I don't even have a ceiling fan. Nor do the other people I know without a hood. We do all have old houses, though, and they are built specifically meant to breathe. And in each case they've been left to do that, so perhaps that helps?

I don’t have a vent hood either. It must not be code here. I wish I had one though.

But, we have high ceilings and, like I said, a ceiling fan, so maybe that’s enough? How does your ceiling fan look? Mine runs all summer on low. When I shut it off for winter - - it is scary! LOL. The blades are a bit furry on the edges. I don't have a 'real' hood so to speak. I have an exhaust fan that has filters, but it does not have duct work that takes it anywhere. I try to turn on the fan when I am cooking, just to start the draft up into the filters. They are stainless steel mesh filters that I can take out and wash easily. I pop them in the dishwasher every so often, when I have room. My house is almost 100 years old, so there is no ductwork to have a real hood. I had nothing at all when we moved in, but I had the filter type one put in when I got new cabinets about 20 years ago. It does help, but I still get kitchen grease type film - especially on that ceiling fan, since it is spinning all the time and pulling stuff towards it. Loads of fun cleaning that fan - yuck. I have to use de-greaser (LA Awesome!) and get it wiped down. But ick. It's nasty! I cook a lot. A LOT! I do make loads of burgers and browned hamburger. I do try to use a spatter screen and turn that exhaust fan on - but it's in the air. I cook bacon every week, for the week. But I do that in the oven.

I can’t imagine where all that grease would go if it wasn’t collected in my fan, but it probably has a lot to do with how often and what types of foods you cook. Are any of your walls or cabinets tacky to the touch? If you take a wipe and clean the top of the cabinet door edge, any sticky grime?

I mean, we do regularly clean the countertops and cabinets, but I assume I would do that whether I have a hood or not. I never fry anything, so I never really think about “grease” coming off my stove. More just steam from boiling water or steaming veggies.
