First of all, if you giggled at all you’re my kind of person 😂
I’m trying to buy some paper online and I’m looking a paper weight (gsm) but based on what arrived it seems that gsm has more to do with thickness and doesn’t necessarily mean the paper is more stiff… I’m sure there’s a relationship between thickness and stiffness, but what numbers do I have to pay attention to if I’m looking more for how stiff the paper will be?
I ordered paper over a year ago and they sent me the wrong stuff but I liked it better so I kept it - but the mistake was because it was mislabeled so there’s no way to find out what I received… It’s strong like a chipboard but it’s not chipboard - very fine, smooth surface, stamps well, etc, and cuts easy with one pass on my plain old paper trimmer…
I’m not sure what adjectives are useful when describing how stiff it is but I cut it to fit those Avery-Elle stamp pocket envelope things and I can attached metal dies to it and it doesn’t flop or sag at all… I’ve tried with the thickest cardstock I have and it’s sturdy enough that it doesn’t crumple or anything, but you have to hold the whole thing/support it when you’re taking it out or putting it into the pockets - with the other paper you could grab it just at the top and it doesn’t even flex…

I'd say you are looking for density (of ??, the fibers?), but no idea what numbers that would be or how it would be labeled.

Because what showed up was the wrong colour and texture. That chart is specific to that company’s paper. They gsms they show corresponding to lbs is their paper and not an industry standard - you can have different gsms for the same lb weight.

They are different because Grams per square Meter is different than pounds per square foot. A meter is 3.28 feet, and a pound is 453.59 grams. Also there is not a standard folio size.

penny. Here is a good video from Jennifer McGuire that talks about paper weight and the thickness.

Was the paper you ordered from a store that only carries their brand or from a general paper shop that carries multiple brands? If the first, I wonder if we could figure out what it is with more info. Pea detectives to the rescue! I will say that for thick paper that's almost like chipboard, I like the Papertrey Ink 160lb Tag Stock. It's not quite as smooth as Neenah but it's pretty nice. Simon 120lb is quite smooth but not as thick. And I like the Accent 120lb from Amazon because it's cheap, but it's not as smooth. I would be happy to cut some small pieces of each of those papers and mail them to you, if it would help. Just PM me your address if you want. These are all white options, because usually with colored cardstock, it seems that 100lb is that heaviest that cardmaking companies make.

Lbs paper weight is utterly unreliable and useless, because it's not one scale but half a dozen depending if it's paper weight, coverstock, index, cardstock, etc. GSM is standardized and is comparable across paper sizes and brands, though it does not account for stiffness. That has to do with how the paper is actually manufactured, as does the finish.

have you tried Neenah Solar White 110 lb 297 g/m2? it is thick, sturdy and cuts with one pass on a trimmer
I would also suggest going to a local print shop and see/feel/test what they carry that fits your needs.
