I LOVE Target’s drive-up service. I mean, really really love it! Tonight I saw some people on my neighborhood Facebook page talking about tipping the employees when they bring out your order. I’ve never noticed anyone giving a tip. Nor have I ever seen an employee looking awkward like they were expecting a tip. In fact, they don’t even come to the driver window - they just drop the order in the back, say “have a nice day”, and move on to the next order. Have I just been completely oblivious? Do most people tip for this?

I have only used it twice but never thought to tip. I thought it was like Walmart or Sam’s club where they can’t get tips. I know grocery stores can get tips.

Oh thank goodness! I was feeling mortified at the idea that I’d been stiffing them all this whole time

I think when they just drop it in the back the whole idea is for there to be no close interaction, so no, I wouldn't tip (I've never used the service, just seen it at my Target.)

No and didn’t even think to do that! I know at frys they aren’t allowed to accept tips. I tried years ago when the curbside just started.

I have never done it, but I wouldn't think of tipping. I don't tip a store employee that spends time helping me find an item in the backroom or searching around the store to help. I don't know why one group would get tipped and not the other. When an employee is especially friendly and helpful, I often compliment them to the manager.

Around here Target employees starting wage is about $15-16 an hour, so I wouldn’t expect to have to tip. It’s not like a restaurant server who is making a minimal hourly wage and is relying on tips to bring it up.

I've only used the service once or twice and unless it was an option when I ordered online, I didn't tip. If there is an option to tip online when doing a curbside pickup I do. If not, I assume they can't accept tips and I rarely carry cash these days anyway.

I have been using Target pick up before it became popular during the pandemic. I have never tipped but I have seen several people tip while I've been waiting for my pickup.

They are not supposed to accept tips and can be written up if caught.

I have thought about that. Because when I get it, it's usually -20F below. But they basically just get my code, with the window down, not even near my car, and throw stuff in the back and run back in. So it would be hard to do!. but I've wanted to!

It wouldn't even occur to me to tip.
Tipping needs to go away.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I’m glad it’s not common (and it sounds like tipping may not even be allowed). I’ll go back to not even thinking about it 😀

My most recent curbside guy at HEB told me they can get fired for accepting tips. I'm not sure about other grocers. I didn’t know about the getting fired thing. At the very beginning of the pandemic when we first started using their service I called customer service to ask about tipping, because I wanted to be able to tip the person who did our actual shopping. They putting their health at risk so we could stay safe, things were a real mess and substitutions were needed for most things and I left notes about subs on so many of our items I knew our order was a PITA. I just really wanted to acknowledge that and show appreciation. They said not to tip, I’m not 100% certain if they indicated they weren’t allowed to accept but I think so, and that the person bringing out the groceries wasn’t the same person who shopped for them or necessarily even a shopper. I was bothered by it at the time because of what was happening in the world, but these days things are different so I wouldn’t think to tip the person who delivers the groceries.

When I was contemplating this early on I thought we could put it in the back with an obvious note addressed to HEB, big black sharpie on white paper, right where the groceries would go.

Haha, yes, I saw it over the weekend and mentioned it to my husband! I figured people always complain about things, it would be nice to compliment for a change. I thought that was a nice thing to do, but I guess not anymore? It will be so hard to not thank people and compliment them. But if people don't like that, I don't want to do the wrong thing.

Oh gosh, I guess I'm in the minority here. I LOVE Target drive-up and I tip 90% of the time. The only time I don't is if I just don't happen to have cash on me.
