When I call a doctors office and get to speak to a live person I will usually start with what I need (appointment or refill) and then give name and DOB.
When I have to leave a message/voice mail, which happens more and more frequently I begin with my name/DOB followed by what I need then followed by my name and DOB again and then phone number.

It depends who I'm calling but anywhere that the person answering potentially knows me and I have to make an appointment I will say my name. If I'm calling a business and I want information etc, then I just give the reason for the call, because no doubt I'm going to have to give my details formally anyway, so then I wait until they ask for them.

It depends. At our dr's office they always answer with "Thank you for calling Generic Named Heath Care Center. This is Happy Medical Receptionist. How can I help you?" And so I will say that I'd like to make an appt. or leave a message for a doctor or whatnot. And then they ask my name. But if I'm calling someone who is working with me/us on something---a contractor, a travel agent, a financial advisor, etc., then I start my call with "Hi, this is Melanell Pea. blah, blah, blah"

It drives me crazy at work when coworkers call me and expect me to know them by their voice. Our first names do show up if we are calling from our own extension but we shift around the building enough that I don’t take it at face value. How hard is it to say hi it’s Michelle…

Locally I would say "Hi this is Jane Doe, I wanted to make an appointment/was calling about" because I'd probably know the person answering the phone. If I'm calling the city "Hi there, I'd like to make an appointment" When they get to needing my name they'll ask. Work things I say "Hi I'm calling from XYZ Company" if they need my name they can ask for it, if anything they will need to ask the company name again.

In theory a work call yes but calling a dentist or doctor office? No that seems odd to me I would wait for them to ask for my info. I only saw my name if the person who answers the phone says their name and I know that they know me. This applies for dentist office kid's school, etc. Otherwise, I wait for them to ask my name. 😉

It depends on what I am calling about. I know at work, when I take calls, and people begin with their name by the time they get through their reason for calling I have forgotten their name and have to ask "I'm sorry, what was your name again?"
