I have always had some strange dreams, particularly the week before my period, but the last few months has been horrible. Several times a week I wake with bad dreams that are really unsettling. I always wake up at least a few times a night (not always because of the dreams) and I also take magnesium before bed (have done this for years). Is there anything that you have found helpful (or what to avoid) to reducing bad dreams? I never seem to wake up and think, "wow, that was a good dream." It is always the strange ones.

Following cause I have very vivid dreams and am often tired the next morning cause I was so busy during my dreams.

BFF gets vivid dreams every night and it’s awful. They may have slowed down after the iud. I think they are better.

My mom would always tell me not to eat pickles too close to bedtime because it would give you bad dreams. In college I was in a psychology class and we were learning about dreams. I mentioned what my mom had always told me about eating pickles and he said that yes, anything that causes your stomach to work overtime too close to bedtime can cause bad/vivid dreams.

I've had vivid/weird dreams all my life. DH is always amazed at how much I remember them when I wake up. I usually just remember bits and pieces and they have always been very strange and like an action movie. I would wake up and wonder how my brain thought of those things, and if the way my sleeping brain was actually accurate in how some things work. It's hard to explain. But now I have more emotional dreams where bad things are happening to people or I am trying to get away from people, etc. Could be related to anxiety but I am not sure. I could definitely see that eating before bed could make a difference. I usually don't eat after dinner but will try to be more aware of that and see if there is a connection.

I often have strange vivid dreams. I’ve tried to track them and haven’t found a consistent trigger, other than cold medicine. Last night was especially bad. Mine aren’t always as action packed as yours, they usually revolve around being chased or attacked or don’t make any sense at all like being able to fly on the wings of a plane. A therapist once told me it’s just my brain’s way of working through scenarios so I would be prepared if whatever was worrying me actually happened, but I’m not sure how true that is.

I've had vivid/weird dreams all my life. DH is always amazed at how much I remember them when I wake up. Me, too. I always have very detailed and vivid weird dreams. But they are very rarely unsettling. Mostly just funny because they are so off the wall. My Dad says he’s the same way. So I don’t think it’s related to environment or diet for me.

Some of my more vivid and strange dreams come when I have more than one drink and have it too close to bedtime.
There's a nighttime cold medicine that screws up my sleep and dreams. I have to be feeling really bad to take it now.

I noticed that I rarely remembered dreams after going through menopause (12 years now). However, in the last 6-12 months, I fall back asleep after my alarm goes off at 6am and when I naturally wake up around 7:15a I have at least one really vivid dream a week. Sometimes they are very unsettling, other times just vaguely off. They are never dreams that feel positive. They are usually related to something happening in my life. I've also noticed myself feeling more nostalgic and it can tip into melancholy. It's not something that I've really dealt with in my life. I've always been someone who is positive, glass half-full nothing can't be handled. COVID/Pandemic seems to have really triggered this change.

I had to stop reading horror novels because I would have the worst dreams. I do find that it matters what I do right before I fall asleep so I tend to limit myself to watching only certain types of shows while in bed.

Any chance you're taking melatonin? I have the worst dreams when I take it. Same here. I’m a really light sleeper and I wake up frequently anyway, so I thought maybe melatonin would help. But instead it gave me the *worst* dreams several nights in a row and that was the only thing I was doing differently so I was done. I gave it to my brother who takes it every night. The only way I can guarantee getting a deep sleep is on the rare occasions when I take cold medicine like NyQuil or Benadryl. Then it’s total lights out and I don’t remember a thing.

If I eat red meat later (like after 7:30 pm), I dream vividly!
So if I dream wild, I tend to track what I’m eating in the evening.
I had an Rx that led to not so pleasant dreams. Thank god that’s over !!!

I have read horror novels and watched horror movies/tv shows since I was a kid. Didn't seem to impact my dreams at all. In the last 2 years I watched a few episodes of Mindunter, had really scary dreams and quit. Then I watched a few episodes of Evil, had scary dreams and quit. It's got to be something about getting old or hormones (lack of?) or something.

My triggers for weird mad, angry, dreams are stress and anxiety followed by the night after a session with my therapist. I find self talk is the most helpful to me. Dreams for me are my subconscious in action telling me about my what is causing anxiety but using symbols that seem non sensical doing non sensical things. So I take notes of what I can remember about the dream (who, where, what was weird, and details that seemed to stand out) Then the next evening I ask my sub conscious to make those memories and thoughts clearer to me. Sometimes during the day I will dawn on the that x stands for y. Often words that sound alike but otherwise aren't alike such as jeans/genes if I have been stewing about passing down some genetic anomalies I might suddenly start dreaming about jeans doing weird things. Try asking yourself if they mean anything, especially the dreams that seem to repeat.

I don't think mine are food induced as I don't eat anything after 6PM. A recurring theme is trying to find a bathroom and often it's in a public place. I also often have dreams with my family members (mom, dad & sister) who are deceased. I love those dreams. Very often when I wake up, I think *thank goodness that was a dream!*

I’m speaking quantum here but here’s some ideas that help me:,
Shield your energy when you sleep. Set an intent that you only connect with those of the highest and greatest good in your dreams. Google ways to clear your energy field before bed to not take the day to bed with you. Limit your exposure to any heavy energy on tv, music, people, foods...etc Keep a dream journal by your bed to write down insights in your dreams (after you have done all the above)
Hope this helps and you start having lighter dreams.

I learned from my sleep doctor that there are over 80 different types of sleep disorders. You might want to check with your internist about this, maybe see a specialist and have a sleep study done.

Very often when I wake up, I think *thank goodness that was a dream!* I used to have that public toilet dream frequently! It was so embarrassing! Don't know why because I wasn't the one putting toilets in public places lol. Oddly after my divorce I had one last dream where I visited several of the toilets and they were gone. Haven't had another one since.

Are they the same repetitive dreams? If so, analyzing and trying to figure out what they mean helped me. After I figured out what it was trying to tell me, or what was bothering me in real life, those particular dreams would stop.
Kind of like, oh, I got got the message and the dream was no longer necessary.
If they are random weird dreams not linked to your life, I got nothing.

My dad told me cucumbers would cause bad dreams. I do find certain foods make for a more restless night. I think it is trial and error though on what affects you. It doesn't have to be right before bed. I can eat those chocolate cookies from Aldi at 7 pm and then have bad dreams well after midnight.

I have crazy dreams all the damn time. I always just assumed that it's because of my bipolar. That I'm working so hard during the day to curb the thoughts in my brain that they all coming rushing out crazy when I sleep. I rarely have bad dreams, but I do believe that with bad dreams, they are trying to tell me something. Warn me. Or that there's something I need to work out. Or related to the stress I'm having going on in my life. And crazy, crazy dreams about peas sometimes. I had a dream last week that I was performing scrapmaven surgery. I have dreams about camping with lucy and elaine where we are drinking beers (I don't drink beer) wearing Biden t-shirts. Haha. I had a dream I finally wrote my book and desertgirl was my editor and she was promoting the heck out of my book, making me go on all sorts of book signing tours with her. Last night I dreamed I was running a marathon and my high school boyfriend was the person handing out water at all the stations, cheering me on. (He posted on Facebook yesterday and he doesn't post much, he was a very supportive guy when my grandfather was dying, and I have finally healed the nerve damage in my foot and need to get back out running so I'm sure all that is where that dream came from.) I have regularly occurring dreams about Jeremy quitting his job (he complains a lot about his job) and doing other things that are weird, like being a clown for kids parties. I can see how all of my dreams are triggered by something going on or something I have heard in the daytime that my brain just takes over when I sleep. So I would suggest that something is triggering your dreams, Kristin. I just started taking magnesium about 6 months ago for weakness in my legs caused by one of my psychiatric medicines and I haven't noticed any difference. However, I have always, always, dreamed quite a bit. And at least good news for me is, I don't feel it impacts my quality of sleep either.

And if the dreams aren't repeating, look for themes that are. I had some rough dreams as a kid and I saw a Dr about it. He showed me the themes, and from there all but three of the dreams stopped and they were on repeat. He helped me see what I could do to change the course of those dreams, and I was able to do so. There are things that still trigger these dreams, and I still deal with them in the same way. They don't bother me at all, and I even find comfort in their familiarity, but they do trigger me to take care of various kinds of business that are causing me stress of making me anxious.

I don't usually remember the dream for very long, and they are so disjointed and strange that it is hard to make sense of them, but maybe writing it down right when I wake up would help to see a theme. I just know that I wake up feeling very emotional and sometimes have a hard time getting out of the dream and fully waking up. I know something bad was happening, but can't remember what. When I was in college I was a waitress at Applebee's in a very busy college town. I didn't have the dreams while working there, that I remember, but for several years afterwards I would dream about it. The theme was always that I was swamped at work--maybe I was the only server for the whole restaurant, or I wasn't able to get into the computer to place orders. The main theme was that I had a lot to do and couldn't do it. I could definitely see the theme there. I have had similar dreams over the years (like being in a situation where my son was drowning but I couldn't move to save him). I don't think the magnesium is the issue, either, but I could see if I had changes in sleep patterns that might make a difference. The other night I had one of those dreams and when I look at my sleep app, I more REM sleep than normal that night. That might make sense of why I remember dreams or wake up during them, but probably not necessarily the themes fo the dreams. Those are probably two different issues.

Usually it looks like a "gang bathroom" with several toilets just all against the walls with no doors or just half doors/walls. The toilets are usually really disgusting and overflowing. So in my dream I start looking for somewhere else to pee. Usually I wake up needing to pee!
