It seems Russia’s expulsion from the Swift financial system creeps closer - Italy have given the ok, Germany are thought to be about to say the same. I believe the US is not giving it the ok yet - I hope they can reach the same decision. US is waiting for Germany, apparently. I’m gathering, from people who understand this more than I do, that it’s not an easy call for Germany, cause it will hurt them the most. These things are often complex like that.

Wow, I guess Germany made the call.
It says some, so I assume that leaves room to incrementally add more to add pressure?

I should temper with - "some" could skew it from being big to more of a statement than really cutting off Russian commerce.

There was a later update they are putting restrictions on the Russian Central Bank, too. I guess that’s kind of a big deal, too. Edit, ok I get it. They’ve been propping up the rubles value with reserves from their central bank. They can’t now.

And they’ve now agreed. Orban. Can you believe it? I think it’s testimony to the fact that the majority of nations, including that led by a tyrant who’s wanting to do business with Putin, are outraged.

Yeah, that’s actually a bigger deal than Germany agreeing.

I'm still waiting for details - for those interested, the countries most dependent on Russian natural gas (hats of to Germany as part of G10 and could have vetoed with half of their gas coming from Russia) www.statista.com/chart/26768/dependence-on-russian-gas-by-european-country/As I said, they haven't cut off all Russian banks, so may be allowing a work around for natural gas and targeting banks who will be less disruptive - I'll be interested to see the details.

Massive explosions near capital of Kyiv right now. It's 1:00 a.m. their time. Heartbreaking.

This is the Russians’ 3rd attempt to take the capital - they’ll be hitting it hard. Citizens are under a 36 hour curfew to try and minimise casualties 😕

but I understood that his life was threatened. I believe Zelensky's life has been threatened also. By way more than an 18 wheeler driver, too. He is a brave man and I wanted to point out the difference in what was the hot topic on 2peas a week or so ago compared to now. Kinda puts things into perspective, I think. YMMV. Zelenskyy’s entire country is under attack by a foreign power. Trudeau had some people throwing a big temper-tantrum and threatening his life over vaccines that 90% of their colleagues had already gotten. I don’t blame him for not risking his life for a few nut jobs. Talk about false equivalencies.

Russian troops are advancing in the city of Kharkiv as people are desperately seeking ways to flee. In Kharkiv, a Desperate Choice: Stay or Go?KHARKIV, Ukraine—Hundreds of people huddled on a platform at Kharkiv’s train station on Saturday, glancing up toward each approaching thud of Russian shellfire. Braced against the biting cold, suitcases stacked all around, they waited for the next westbound train to escape the invading Russian army. Not everyone has the option to escape. Thousands of civilians remain in Kharkiv, despite the increasing frequency and proximity of Russian shelling and rocket fire. In these exposed suburbs, long lines of people gathered outside a supermarket on Saturday to stock up in case of a siege. The shelling was loud, the shelves increasingly empty. In the city center, another grocery store line snaked down an otherwise empty street. “It’s absolutely terrifying,” said Ilya, a 24-year-old tech worker who was hoping to stock up on groceries. He asked to withhold his last name for security concerns. “I didn’t expect it was going to go this far.” A menacing rumble of multiple rockets exploded inside the city, jolting the line of people. “At this point, I have no words,” Ilya continued. “We can’t leave—it is impossible. Everything is blocked. Train stations are full of people. Everyone wants to escape.”

This is No 10 latest official statement LINK regarding the latest sanctions. These sanctions will bring down the Russian government which is the only way of stopping Putin unless we want WW3.

Have y’all seen where the Kremlins website has gone down and the tv channels have been hacked in Russia? They are now playing Ukrainian music. Apparently the hacker group Anonymous is behind it.

I also worry what will happen if Kyiv falls. What is he going to do next? Ukraine is so outnumbered, and I worry that since things aren't going great for Russia right now, what extreme measures will he take next?? UGH I hate this.

Putin is quickly losing support all around. There are now two "law makers" in Russia who did vote for the independence of the two new 'countries'. They are now stating that they do not approve of the attack on all of Ukraine.
It is also amazing the number of ordinary Russians who are risking their freedom and possible lives protesting on the streets.

CNN: Erin Burnett. Hungry is taking people with PassPorts, not requiring Visas. Poland entry very backed up, taking people without papers and is still taking pets.

The hope is that when these oligarchs that surround him and support him realise his actions are affecting them personally and they are seen as pariahs to the rest of the world, they'll get rid of him some way or another. They are not going to stand there and watch their wealth and their way of living being destroyed by him.

Just now on MSNBC Putin has ordered his nuclear deterrent forces to be on "HIGH ALERT" as tensions build over Ukraine.. More State functionaries are resigning . More are speaking out against his actions in Ukraine.

It is one of the most difficult things for me to get my head around, as a U.S. resident. Unless you immigrated here, you've just never lived in a place where anything like this has happened. I can't imagine facing this. I can say that if we need to do some sacrificing of convenience here to help the effort there (in various ways), I feel like it is the absolute basement level of what I can do. I have seen several non-profits raising money to go help people get out. I donate to Bethany Frankle's B STRONG charity. They are actively getting people out, helping 1 family get out every 10 min (or something like that). I figured my money was better sent there than going to dinner every night this weekend. www.today.com/popculture/popculture/bethenny-frankel-aid-ukraine-rcna17741It’s refreshing to see a reality star use their powers for good. Say what you (general you) want about Bethenny, this woman gets shit done! It’s impressive.

I saw that the Russian news propaganda is showing footage of the streets of Kyiv looking normal, everything is fine. People are safe. Soldiers are surrendering peacefully.

You know, there was a time when I would have thought, WTH, how do people fall for and believe shit like that?? But then I look at our own country and see how people have fallen hook line and sinker for some total bullshit stuff.
