With the news that Ukraine was invaded by Russia this morning, I'm feeling like I need to keep some sort of documenting, journalling, something...both to help me make sense of what is happening but also because this is likely to be a big deal historically and everyday people's perspective of past historical events has been important, I think. I wonder what my grandparents thought in 1914 and 1939 (they were all born between 1891 and 1903) . Much like documenting the pandemic, I think, but less personal focus and more international? I don't know quite what documenting is going to look like. For now, I've just typed thoughts running through my head, dated them, and saved a document file. Maybe I should look for a headline from the BBC to snip and add? I fear that there are parallels between Germany in the late 1930s and Russia of today (Sudetenland -> Crimea, Czechoslovakia -> Ukraine, Poland -> maybe the Baltic states?) and this'll end up another world war. I hope and pray not but ... I'm rambling....

I will be documenting it. I screen shot CNN last night when it announced Russia was invading. BBC would be a good one to have as well. Right now, I am just making notes and grabbing some photos off the web and adding them to a Digital file folder for later. Not sure what I will do it all. Oh, and I am making a list of prices of things because I feel like we will see much higher prices in the near future (gas, groceries).

War is God's way of teaching American's geography. History is an account, mostly false, of events, mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers, mostly knaves, and soldiers, mostly fools. Ambrose Bierce

They were actually much higher than today. I am not sure what I'll document for current situation.

I’ve been capturing screenshots and pictures on my phone. Not sure what I’ll do with them, but I will have a timeline of events and speeches with time stamps. Because knowing me, anything I capture now isn’t getting scrapped for a while.

I feel like I want to record something about it, I'm much more aware now than I ever was during things like the Gulf War, so I feel I have a better understanding of the possible ramifications of what's happened in the last day or so vs the Gulf War when I was just annoyed it was non-stop coverage on the two or three channels we had in those days and all the shows I wanted to watch as a teenager weren't on. I've grabbed a couple of screenshots of headlines and plan to write some thoughts down tonight.

Does anyone remember the website that has "today's" newspaper headlines from all over the world?

I am making a list of prices of things because I feel like we will see much higher prices in the near future (gas, groceries). I save my grocery receipt from time to time, based on keeping in my PL everything which I wish my Grandma had saved all those years ago. This morning, I filled my car and kept that receipt too. I noticed that it was rather more than it was just a week or so ago. I too screenshot the front page of a newspaper on my phone when something momentous happens - election result, extreme weather, 22.2.2022 and so on. I really didn't want to have a "Russia v Ukraine" card in my PL but sadly, it will be there.

I also screenshot. For the NYT if you subscribe, you can actually view the front page of the print newspaper, so I like to do that since it's more visual.
I regularly screenshot or note articles every other week or so and include it in my documenting, generally my storyline chapters books. I do major headlines (wars, covid numbers, attacks, elections) and then stuff I am interested in (space, genetics, medical advancements, science/animals). One of my stamp sets has two stamps: "in the news" and "current events" that I use regularly.

I usually don’t document too many current events but I feel compelled to document this war. I think because In the last decade I’ve done a great deal of reading on how Hitler stole the art, antiquities, & archival materials from the countries he invaded. That in turn led me to start reading about the arts in Germany between WWI- WWII. You can’t begin to address that topic without dealing with the politics of the time. I too see similarities between our time & then. It’s disturbing, in a lose sleep over it kind of way. Especially when Putin starts invading & conquering countries and the West stands by and does nothing. We know the consequences of Putin’s actions and our inaction. We fought 2 big wars, and still we stand aside and let Putin continue. I don’t know how I’ll document this yet. All I do know is that the pictures will not play a big role, if any. I also think we will learn about the arm twisting that went on behind closed doors to make things happen (specifically Germany & the Russian gas line). At this point I’m feeling like I’d need to do a lot more research and then write a book. Not exactly what I plan on doing. I just haven’t been able to let go of my interest in the cultural reactions to events like these. I’m also interested to see the differences in how Ukrainian refuges are treated vs. Afghani refugees. Especially in countries like Poland, Greece, Germany, and France.

I often do a page of something current but will not likely do this particular event. The last current event I scrapped was Kamala Harris swearing in. In the past I did 9/11, Katrina, Barack Obama when I saw him campaigning, and some voting pages. I did some Covid as it related to us personally, like empty shelves, wearing masks, vaccine.. I might do Ketanji Brown's Supreme Court appt.
Otherwise I tend not to scrap current events because I no longer scrap for myself and I am so bogged down with photos I just can't keep adding stuff.

I typically only document the happy things because I dwell on the negative things too much in my head. HOWEVER, I did document all the craziness of January 2020. I've occasionally thrown in a funny meme or a news article in my family album since then. Sometimes it is a lot to deal with. I have a set of news stamps I plan on using. I can't remember the name of the manufacturer though. I put them in a clear envelope and forgot to label them.
Something that helps me is to take screenshots on my phone and move them right away to my camera album. So when the month is over, I make a new year and month album. Otherwise, I forget about my screenshots folder. This has also been helpful when we've gone to events where you can't take photos like plays.

Not yet. I think, much like 9/11, I'm still too scared by all of it

I definitely feel this way. I’ve documented the pandemic in my own way. It helps. ❤️
