Never watch Black Mirror (there’s literally an entire episode about the social score nightmare)? Read 1984? Think about anything critically?

I’m quite capable of talking both politics and lots of other things. I don’t think posts should be shunned, like there is something terrible about being political. The board is riddled with game threads, which I never participate in, but I would never shun them to their own board either - people clearly enjoy them, so it’s fine with me.

Yes well maybe those people need to take a break from the board instead of the rest of us who want to enjoy our time here. Maybe that should be our code phrase? "I think you need to step away from the board/thread" Unfortunately all that does is further enrage them and invite even more posts & attacks on other peas. Easier to back away. YMMV though. It's really too bad. You know if some said something like that to me, it would totally cause me to pause and consider my words and the place they were coming from. I have hard days too. I could easily come here or anywhere else and take out my frustration on everyone. With that, I need to shut this thread out of my brain today. For the very first time in 6 years now I feel like there is a bit of mental space in my head just for me to fill that isn't full of anxiety, panic, and worry and I want to fill it positively. As busy said, the peas can be very, very awesome. I know when we are at our best,we are amazing. ❤️

myshelly, anytime i am on the opposite side that you are, i consider that a win. i assure you, your two peas social credit score wouldn't be great.
not talking about an actual social credit score like china has, but something like the reddit karma score might be useful in lots of internet applications, it would be reasonable.

if a certain number of people voted to block you, out you go. Not a fan of that either. LOL While there are a few people I wish would stop posting their crap here and wonder what positivity they actually get out of their time here, I would not want the number of people blocking them to make them be booted out. What if a group of posters just decided they didn't like you and blocked you, for no other reason than they don't like you?

"I think you need to step away from the board/thread" Even when it's meant to be kind, it's practically the same as "I think you need to calm down." When has anyone ever calmed down after being told to do so? 😄 Never. Based on the proliferation of memes about it alone. 😝

Except it is open to abuse because it leans left, except on specific subs. I participate on more than a few, and I’ve seen perfectly reasonable, non abusive comments downvoted to hell because they don’t lean the right way (depending on the sub) politically.

You recognize that you just posted this, when not 5 minuets before you were being a bitch to another poster, right? You are contributing to the toxicity of this thread.

I worry with something like that if you have a valid (but unpopular) opinion, then you get immediately downvoted by those who feel superior in their thinking. The feature is definitely abused on Reddit, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, I think because covid was so politicized and because of the 24 hour news cycle, politics have become so pervasive in everyone’s lives, especially in the last 2 years. I understand some peas would prefer this board remain a happy place without all of the politics. Everyone could use an escape from the stress of the last 2 years. And I understand the frustration when politics pop up on a thread that appears safe. But, I do think the political threads have a place here, too.

This has been discussed ad infinitum. You'd end up with 20 separate boards for food, travel, pets, games, politics, cooking etc etc. And the general consensus is always no.

I don’t mind the political threads because I stay out of them, but when a post is made asking a specific non-threatening, literally completely innocent question, people need to keep their rude opinions to themselves. I didn’t ask for anyones negative opinions. I asked about where to stay for a vacation. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about the place I want to visit. It’s my prerogative. You don’t have to like it, but I’ve been going to this said state for at least 15 years, and will continue to do so. Either add answers to the questions, or move on. I will definitely think twice about posting anything to this board anymore, with the exception of my thoughts and prayers (which some of you don’t agree with, but that’s who *I* am, and will continue to be.), or an actual answer to a question may be able to assist with. And, no, it’s not because I don’t have thick skin. Nothing in that thread was directed at me, but it did not belong there, and I refuse to wade through peas spewing crap on my innocent post. Take it elsewhere.

I backed out and said nothing, thinking I should have spoken up before I backed out. I'm sorry that whole thing happened!! The other problem is that I have family living near that area, which hurts my heart but I love them and will visit when possible. (BTW: your earrings are great!! How's going with the selling?)

Got it.

oh, and i would like to see the politics threads move to their own space. tired of all the politics threads. if all you want to do is talk politics, i am sure there are other places to do that. I think that is unreasonable. “Politics” is an amorphous term, and it is pretty easy to tell from a thread title if the thread is about something you would put in the politics bucket. A lot of us, I think, are processing and following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; that is political, for sure, but it’s what’s on our minds. I posted earlier this week about the anti-trans stuff in Texas; as a parent of a non-gender-conforming kid, that is weighing very heavily on my mind—I don’t think of it (personally) as politics, but as speaking to my deepest parental fears. I also get that, because a political figure is taking the action, it is also politics. Given the level of argument that can go on in a thread about whether or not to return a shopping cart, I don’t think the arguing is necessarily political anyway.

Listen, we all know which peas are the Bitchy Von Icanthelpbutbeabitch. I cannot recommend the ignore button enough, as changing others’ personalities doesn’t work. Only how we react (or not) to them. Works for political threads, game threads, my threads if you can’t stand me, etc really well too. Give it a try girls.

I would like to make a point about that thread that went bad. If you are a family that loves a member of the lgbtq+ community, knowing where there isn't acceptance of your loved one in a travel location is important to us.
Also, some of us don't think who our loved ones are should be (is a?) political issue. Calling it that and dismissing it as a political issue in itself can be offensive.
I'm hoping to say this in a non-threatening way because I really want people to understand. This is a huge deal for us and if I were posting like Kiki did, and for some reason didn't know that information about the location I was traveling to, I would have appreciated the posts that had pointed it out.
I do see that some responses got nasty. Those aren't the responses I'm referring to.

I think they do something like that in China. My mom told me about it awhile ago, where they track people and they are dinged for various things (can’t remember what but it was very intrusive and messed up). Not sure we want that here.

The problem with that is that it is not uncommon for non political threads to turn political. Just look at the recent travel to Clearwater thread...who would have thought that would turn political? Then that would really be encouraging groupthink here. That’s not what a supposedly democratic board should be aspiring to. Like Skellinton and MichyM said, using the ignore feature would be a good remedy. If there’s a non-political thread that gets hijacked, don’t respond to the posters who hijacked it. Non-political threads get derailed because some respond. That’s like tossing a lit match onto something that’s already incendiary. So, of course, it degenerates from there. Just ignore and stick to the topic. (Specifically about LGBTQ issues…just because someone doesn’t wish to discuss it on her thread doesn’t mean that person doesn’t care. If a pea starts a thread on basket weaving and someone comes along to inject an LGBTQ issue not germane to the topic, that’s unfair to the OP.)

Absolutely agree.
This is why I left the board. 22 years I’ve been here, off and on (I think?). This last time I left for an extended period. The sheer UNKINDNESS and vile bullying.
I’m dismayed that someone can’t ask for trip advice without a whole lot of ugliness thrown her way.
Let’s do better. Be better.
