Prayers said. I hope the little one responds to antibiotics quickly. How in the world would a baby just born on Friday contract meningitis? Surely the area for newborn babies would be one of the biggest priorities for keeping sterile all the time, but especially during a pandemic, wouldn't it? I know that meningitis can be a viral infection but can also be bacterial or fungal. And I would have thought that whatever they are using in that hospital to combat and sterilize against Covid 19 would kill the germs that cause meningitis. Please keep us updated when you can and let your niece know she has the peas pulling for her. I am a NICU RN. Babies can be born with meningitis. OP, I am glad the medical team caught this before the sweet baby was sent home. Has mom been able to visit the baby and hold him yet? Big hugs your family. Thanks. Yes she is able to hold him thank goodness.

And I believe she had viral meningitis not bacterial but after a course of antibiotics she went home with no issues. The only issue was that she couldn’t leave the hospital, this was a 1985, until the anabiotic‘s were done. I’m sure that’s not the case anymore. Gravity. Could the meningitis have been caused by the mom having strep? I know that when my nieces gave birth over the last couple years they were tested for strep before the babies were born

Oh, how worried everyone must be. Prayers said.
And I really appreciate the questions and answers about meningitis and newborns - this thread was also an education for me.

Babies still require hospitalization for IV antibiotics to treat it.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. Initial test for meningitis is negative but apparently there’s a second test, as it can lie dormant, so we still don’t know what is causing the infection. Now they are testing for herpes. They are still in hospital. The positives are that whatever is causing it, his little body is fighting it as the infection markers are now lower than they were at first, and he is feeding well. Apologies if info I’m giving doesn’t make sense, I’m hearing the details second hand from my sister and I don’t know anything about childbirth. It’s so frustrating that, apart from the dad who can visit for 2 hours a day, no one else can visit, she’s really low and lonely in there. I can’t imagine how hard it was for new mums in full lockdown. I passed on all your good wishes to my niece and she was touched by your wishes.

How scary! I have heard of babies being born with meningitis. I hope and pray that whatever is going on with the sweet little guy can be figured out so he can heal.

I’m glad his markers are showing he’s fighting it. I hope he continues to improve and can go home soon.
My grandson was born super early last November and his big brother couldn’t meet him for 5 weeks and it was heartbreaking and made it all very confusing for him, not to mention Mummy and Daddy had to take turns at the hospital etc. It is very difficult and I really feel for them.

Thank you. Hope all is OK with your family now. My niece’s first two pregnancies/births were very difficult, when this one happened so quickly we thought that it was a blessing, but it turned out to be as stressful as the first two. We are staying positive, I’m so grateful that I have the peas to talk to as I don’t want to burden my sister with my worries. I don’t post very often but I know that the peas are there when we really need them.

I'm glad he's feeding well and those infection markers are coming down. Hopefully, they figure it out and he's on a speedier path to healing.

Bless him he sounds a right little fighter. I’m glad his markers are down. It’s such a difficult time for the ones that need that extra support.

Not really an update as there’s no news. My niece and her baby are still in hospital, meningitis has been ruled out but we don’t know what is wrong with the poor little guy. I’m starting to get more worried by the day. Thanks for everyone’s good wishes.

I'm so sorry there is no real change for the better. I really hope the doctors can narrow it down and start an effective treatment soon.

Hoping you have some positive news joelise ? Sorry I’ve not given an update yet, there is no new news to give, mum and baby are still in hospital. We are hoping for results of new tests on Monday. The good news is that he is still feeding well and is a good weight. The meningitis results came back negative but we are still waiting on the Herpes results. The good news is that my niece was able to take the baby down to reception and he met his brother and sister and also his grandma (my sister) they were able to have a cuddle and my niece was finally able to see her children. This was such a relief for her. Thank you for asking. We are starting to feel more positive. The hospitals are just so busy that it’s hard for my niece to get any information.

Not for anything, but my dd#2 developed a UTI at a very young age (she was younger than 6 weeks). It was terrifying - they also thought she had meningitis and she had to have a spinal tap. I was still nursing so I stayed in the hospital with her. I'm tearing up at the memory of her in that crib and when we ran her to the ER with our older dd, who was only 2 and my mom and her husband came at 1 am to pick up our older dd. My dh, who is not a crier, burst into tears in my step-father's arms - so out of character but indicative of how worried and upset we were. And she's fine - which it sounds like will be the case for your niece and her sweet baby.
