My Canon G16 is slowing down so I've started looking into replacing it. It was about $600 and it seems like the latest Canon G cameras are about the same price. But I'm wondering if I might do better by upgrading my iphone. I have an 8 Plus and it's fine but the camera isn't as good as newer iphones. I rarely use my dslr these days. I'm mostly using my iphone and point and shoot. So have you given up on using a point and shoot? If you still use one would you recommend it? If you've upgraded your iphone are you happy with the camera?
Another question - do you use icloud on your iphone or do you shut that feature off?

The best camera is the one you have with you so I would go with the phone upgrade if it were me. Overall I think you'll get more benefit from it, but I'm also a person who hates juggling multiple cameras and carrying a purse and would prefer to be able to share everything on IG without any extra steps. Your mileage definitely may vary if you carry and use your point and shoot regularly already. Mine just sat on a shelf next to my dSLR 90% of the time after I got my iPhone.
I use Photostream to get my photos into my laptop automagically but I don't use the iCloud Photos feature. I have google photos doing pretty much the same thing from my phone though, as an extra backup.
An 8 Plus is probably almost due to start dying on you soon anyway, the way phones are built these days. I forget, are they up to 13 now? I keep getting tagged in spam about iPhone giveaways, but I can't keep track.

Fifteen years ago I took my Canon DSLR, three lenses, my laptop, and a backup drive whenever I traveled. For the past five years, I took only my iPhone (with iCloud backup). I've never regretted the downsize. I have many photos in my scrapbooks and on my walls, and you would never know the difference.

Oh gosh I haven't carried an actual camera with me in years. Definitely upgrade your cell phone. Their cameras take amazing photos these days.

I only use my iPhone these days. I always have it with me, I can easily share photos and it takes decent enough photos for my purposes. I do use iCloud, as then the photos also transfer automatically to my iPad, which I find easier for looking at photos.

I don't have a point and shoot, I have my dSLR and you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. I don't carry it around all the time, but I way prefer it over my iPhone pics. I can tell the difference and, while the camera on the iPhone is much improved compared to older models, it's not what I want to use when I print out vacation/special event type things. However, as was mentioned by joblackford, I'm a firm believer in whatever camera you have is best. Upgrading to the iPhone 13 Pro (best camera currently for iPhone), you'd see a huge improvement. I would like to point out that the "Protrait Mode" is good if you want to get that "it's a phone pic but also better" type shot. I just find not having complete control over everything is a pain, for me, hence the dSLR. Overall, I'm a photo snob and I fully admit that, while the rest of my family is perfectly happy and content with their phone cameras and haven't looked back at point and shoots in years. Regarding the Cloud, I pay the extra 99 cents a month to have a back up, but I do regularly back my photos up to my desktop which then automatically backs up to an external HD and a separate service to another online back up.

I spent a month in Europe last December; 100% of my photos were taken with my new iPhone (purchased in October). I was so happy not to have to drag along one more piece of equipment (i.e., camera). My pics are superb.

I primarily use my iphone. I used to take DSLR on trips, haven't done that since....2016ish?! Even tho I enjoy playing around with manual photography, for most things iphone works fine. I prefer candid snapshots for documenting most of the time. I have an iphone X, I can't speak to if the newer ones are better, but I think they have better night/dark features?
I do use the iCloud and pay a little each month for more. I've been going thru and backing up my photos between external hard drives and a cloud based service lately.
I want to suggest renting cameras if you are in the market. For years I went thru BorrowLenses.com, haven't in a while, but they were always good for renting lens. You can also rent all different kind of camera bodies. They also run specials and stuff too.

I have the iPhone 13. Prior to getting it I watched a ton of YT videos about features. Many of the reviewers mentioned the camera, and when I specifically looked for camera reviews I decided to get the phone. You won't be sorry. I love the phone, and the pictures are amazing.

I too have a point and shoot, DSLR and an iPhone. I take about 99.99999% of my photos with my iPhone. The last time I used my DSLR was when we went on a cruise to Alaska in 2019. My point and shoot is very neglected and I should just donate it or recycle it.
If I were you, spend the money on a new iPhone.

It comes down to what you usually use. Have you consistently been using your point and shoot? If so I’d probably replace it since the quality of the pictures will be better than the phone. If you’ve found you haven’t been using it upgrade the phone. Like PP said I’m kind of a photography snob and can tell the difference, but I’m also shooting raw with a DSLR and editing my pictures. iPhones do a great job, but for me, I’m ok lugging around my beast.

Thanks for all of your input. I’m leaning towards an iPhone 13. I need to figure out how to simplify moving my iPhone pictures to my pc. Every time I do it, which isn’t often enough, I feel like I’m trying to figure it out for the first time again.

I’d vote for a phone upgrade as well. Annie Leibowitz is the one who said the best camera is the one that you have with you. If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me!
I do use the Cloud backup on my phone. Photos are also on my computer and another site. It’s too easy to lose your phone and then all your photos are gone. I have 80,000+ photos on the Cloud and am only using 47gb of my phone memory. I use the Optimize Photo Storage for that. It keeps a thumbnail of the photo and downloads the rest of the data if you tap on the thumbnail. It’s very easy to use and I don’t need to spend the extra $$$ for 256mb of storage.
One recommendation would be to take a class at your Apple store on taking photos. There are a lot of different settings that you may not know about on the new photos that will really enhance your phone photos.

I have a lovely iPhone 13 and an old DSLR, and my DSLR is still way better than my 13 for anything not close up.

Without reading any of the other replies, I would say to definitely upgrade your phone rather than buying a new camera. I got an iPhone 12 Pro Max just over a year ago, and I have not touched my DSLR or my P&S since then. DD got the 13 Pro a few months ago, and that camera is even better than my 12 Pro Max.
Definitely get one of the 13's!!

my DSLR is still way better than my 13 for anything not close up. Yes that's true, but if the choice is between a new point & shoot or a new iPhone 13, then surely the phone is a better choice. I don't want to lug a DSLR around every day. The only time I get my DSLR out these days (not that I have for over a year) is if I want to take a photo of something with a zoom lens. The day they make phones with a great zoom is the day I put my DSLR into storage permanently.

Ditto...I'm not entirely sure I remember where my P&S is. I can't remember the last time I pulled out my DSLR (family Christmas photo in 2019 maybe?)

Every time I do it, which isn’t often enough, I feel like I’m trying to figure it out for the first time again. Before my desktop's USB slots started acting up, I was able to plug it in and my computer had me set up my upload options and would automatically do that once I plugged it in. Since my USB lots crapped out (which seems to happen with every desktop I've had in the last 10 years), I have a work around, but doing it daily definitely keeps it from becoming overwhelming. When you plug in your iPhone it should pop up a folder and then you can decide where you put them. I organize mine by something like: Pictures/iPhone/2022/March 2022/2022.03.04 for Videos (way less of those), my organization is: Videos/2022/March 2022. I also separate my iPhone pics from my dSLR photos, but don't separate my dSLR by day because I do not use it daily and also have my memory cards I keep as another back up. Good luck!

A few years ago I went to a mirrorless DSLR (Sony a6500) and I love it, although only take it for travel or big events. Felt much more compact than my old Canon DSLR and I still have the zoom and can change lenses if I wanted. It has a wifi connection, so it is super easy to transfer the photos to my iPhone, which I pretty much do exclusively and then transfer to my Mac if needed. I totally get it and think you can get by with just an iPhone, although I definitely feel like I have more control over my settings with the DSLR to justify it for me. I did a senior photo shoot and have photos from a big trip that made me glad to have it! If I was coming from a place of not having SLR experience for at least a semi-manual mode, I don't know that I'd recommend it as the auto mode is likely very comparable to the new iPhone models (which all my kids have).
FWIW, I don't get to pick my iPhone model (work phone) and last year I got a "new" one and they gave me a 10 and I'm guessing newer models have less digital zoom issues than the 10. I also seem to get moisture/haze issues with my phone camera at some point which affects the overall look of my images, so far I'm still doing okay.

I agree 100% except I should throw out the disclaimer that I haven't done much with an iPhone 11 and up. Digital zoom really degrades images pretty quickly. That was something I even compared between DSLR models, since that varies quite a bit.

I wouldn't take my DSLR many places, but I love it so much for the photos I do take. Since I still scrapbook, I love having a great camera. I love just sitting outside and having the right camera to take pics of all the wildlife.

This was just in my neighbor's yard, but I still had to zoom in on my DSLR. I scrapbook still, so getting great shots is really important to me. I do get that most people use their phone more than I do, so I understand why people would upgrade their phone. I just traded in my 8 in December and that was because the screen was cracked. I had no issue with using my 8. Buck Fall by Nancy Tim, on Flickr

Oh for sure, the zoom function on phones is pretty crap. Your photo of the buck is amazing! And you're right, even the best phone would not have captured such a great shot from that far away. In fact, I'm pretty sure the last time I used my DSLR was to take photos of some birds in my yard, from the back door. I do Project Life and 1SE (video), so I need/want a camera with me at all times, and my phone is perfect for those everyday photos. If I went on an overseas trip, I would still take my DSLR. When we went to Vietnam, I took my DSLR everywhere, and DSO used his phone camera. (Surprisingly some of his phone photos were better than my DSLR photos, but that probably says more about the user than the device hahaha!)

I use Dropbox to move photos from my phone to my computer. It is set up to upload automatically when I'm on wifi. I don't pay for storage just move my photos from the Dropbox folder on my computer to a permanent in folder on my hard drive. I try to do it monthly and after any big photo events like a vacation. Haven't connected my phone to my computer in years.
Also haven't had a point and shoot for probably 7 yrs. But I have android phones (currently a Pixel 6) so no experience with Apple Phones.

Sounds like I'm one of the few who still uses a camera. I'm devoted to my Canon GX7 Mark II.
It is another piece of equipment to carry around and it's not as reactive as snapping away on an iPhone, sticking a filter on it and uploading it to your social media of choice but I love it.
I love the control I have over the settings, I find the quality of the images to be way superior and I just find it a more enjoyable experience.
I should mention that I do not do daily documenting. I only document life events like vacations and birthdays where image quality is really important to me.

I haven’t read all of the replies so far, but I would definitely recommend upgrading your phone. If you are sticking with the iPhone, the newest 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have the best cameras so far from Apple. I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro last Fall and was blown away with the photo quality. I know four people that have also upgraded to the 13 Pro after seeing my photos. There are a couple of threads on the main board that discuss phone camera quality if you want to check them out. Here are some photo examples, no editing or filters, just straight from the iPhone: IPhone 13 Pro Photos

My DH has the 13 pro max and I have the 12 pro max. I'm amazed at how much better his photos are than mine. I didn't think it would be that big a of difference and it is. I try and only upgrade every other year due to cost, so I'm trying really hard to hold out till the fall when the new one will come out. If you can't wait though, I think you'd be really happy with the 13 pro.
