Have you watched it? It's one of those movies that we've been meaning to watch. A young man from Minnesota has one of the main roles (the son) so last fall the local news stations had stories about it. After it won SAG awards last week, we finally made a point to sit down and watch it. OMG. We loved it. I love coming of age movies and this one was very touching. It was predictable and all of the things that I wanted to happen, happened. I cried through one scene and was tempted to back it up and watch it again.
The world is sad right now. If you need a feel good movie, this is it. It would be worth it to get the free one week trial, watch Coda and then the series Acapulco. You would have a great free week of Apple TV+. I'd recommend then spending $5 for a month and watching all of Ted Lasso too.
Any other recommendations of good things you've watched on Apple TV+?

I loved it too. The main character is played by the daughter of British singer Aled Jones who is famous for singing ‘Walking in the Air’ for The Snowman at age 13.

We loved Coda as well.
Last night we watched The Lost Daughter, directed by Maggie Gyllenhall. I was disappointed and kinda bored.

We watched it Saturday night and really enjoyed it. I think that the actor who plays the dad will win the Oscar for supporting actor.
We watched The Power of the Dog on Friday night - it was as disturbing as Coda was enjoyable, but has haunted me as truly excellent films do. I highly recommend it, but it is not a feel-good film by any stretch of the imagination and should only be watched when you are in a good frame of mind, IMO.

I’ve watched it 3 times and cried each time. I just love it. I’ve I also downloaded a couple of the songs sung by the actress and really enjoy listening to them.

I watched it a couple of weeks ago and just loved it! I’m working through movies with Oscar noms in major categories and it’s my fave so far. I would be surprised if it won best picture but the actor who played the father was nothing short of amazing.

You might enjoy the French version of Coda (it came out a few years ago) - La famille Bélier. I doubt it's on Apple, though.

One of the best movies I have seen in a long, long time. I cried through most of it. Like, truly ugly crying by the end of it but in a good way. Gaaahhh, it is so good!!!

ellen have you seen Ted Lasso yet? It’s another feel good type show. We loved Ted Lasso! After we finished it we watched Acapulco - which I liked even better than Ted Lasso. I went on a family vacation to Acapulco in 1985 - about three weeks after the season finale of Acapulco. It brought back all sorts of good feelings for me. The music teacher in Coda is also in Acapulco. I appreciate that people here saw Coda and loved it. I was talking about it at work today and no one had heard of it.

It looks like it’s time for me to expand my horizons.

I was so happy to see CODA win.
The silent scene during the concert is just brilliant.

I can’t wait to see it. I’m not a CODA but I have a friend who is. I’m also a teacher of the Deaf and still teach ASL. It is extremely rare for a movie to be made honoring Deaf culture and the language, and sharing something “real” about Deaf families and their dynamics. I haven’t seen it but I’m happy it was made.

I had a friend who was also a CODA (we sadly lost touch when I moved.) She had an amazing story - she was the only child of deaf parents and their only link to the hearing world. She was set up on a blind date with a guy and thought the date went really well, but he kept putting her off for a few weeks afterwards. They finally went out again and when he came to pick her up, he started signing to her parents - he'd spent the few weeks apart learning sign language. And yes, she did marry him.

I was so happy to see CODA win. The silent scene during the concert is just brilliant. ***SPOILERS*** You know how you can be particularly critical of any movie that portrays your profession? The concert scene made me crazy. There should have been an interpreter at the concert. The school is obliged to provide one. The parents just had to request it, just as they would have for years for parent-teacher conferences and other events. But if we had gotten that reality, we wouldn’t have gotten that particular thematic build-up scene and then we wouldn’t have gotten the daughter-initiated resolution at her later audition. Just like the preposterous idea of a judge today basically fining somebody for having a disability. Out loud! Or the idea that the CODA was literally/legally needed for her parents’ continued employment. There were so many better, realistic ways to portray those important CODA/Deaf themes for an audience that largely doesn’t have exposure to them. Instead, they went the heavy-handed, Lifetime movie writing route too many times for my taste. I do give them points, though, for having the parents discussing dinner plans during the concert. In the past, there have been too many hackneyed, hearingcentric scenes of Deaf people being wistful or sad over not hearing music. Okay, grumpus out. If we had downvotes, I understand they would rain on me. LOL.
