Journaling on layouts.
I like how it looks on other people's layouts and I like how it fills up space on the page, but I've tried it and it's just not for me. Now I just write key details on the back of the layout so if I need help jogging my memory about an event I can go back and look, but it is really basic information (names, month/date if I know it/very brief description of the event or memory).
Does anyone else here not journal directly on their layouts, or are very minimal journalists?

For me, the journalling is an integral part of the layout. The picture tells a story, the journalling tells the story that the picture can’t tell.
There’s no right or wrong, do what works for you.

I consider my albums one big journal, but that doesn't mean I need to actually journal on every page, lol. Sometimes I don't have room for journaling, or I feel the photos/title/page tells the story itself. And that's ok, not every page needs journaling (for me). Just like sometimes I don't have room for a title! And that's ok, too.

A lot of times I hide the journaling, making a pocket behind the photo to add a pull out. I can add my thoughts and info, but it’s not out there for everyone to see.

I am quite happy to leave journalling off the page. Not every photo needs journaling. Sometimes I just want to scrap a gorgeous photo of my kids. Sometimes just a date and place is enough for me. I have a shit-ton of beach/river/pool photos to scrap, and sometimes there is no back story. It was just a fun day at the beach. I feel the same way about titles. I put too much pressure on myself to come up with a title for my pages. Sometimes I just throw my hands in the air and say $%&# it! Not every page needs a title. (Unless you're super talented at titles like kitbop !)

I am probably 50/50 when it comes to journaling/not journaling. I really dislike writing and it's a struggle for me to do it. An interesting title and the date are more important to me than any journaling I might do.

With the exception of once or twice in 25+ years of scrapbooking, I do not journal on my layouts. Sometimes, I will add a date in the bottom corner, if it was specific to the occasion(like 50th Anniversary, 30th Birthday).
Edited to add..... I do use title or alphabet letters to make a title or saying, that is related to a page. Example >> Road trip! Shopping. Name of beach or city.

I journal directly on my pages. I am not a story teller. When I tried in the past, it just felt too contrived? Definitely couldn't get it to work. It's typically basic facts or a quick sentence if I feel the photo needs an explanation.

I run the gamut from no journalling or just a date/place to a photo-less page full of journalling. It really depends on what I'm doing - if I have a story to tell, then I tell it whether I have photos or not. But sometimes, like AussieMeg says - it's just photos I want to scrap.

Thanks AussieMeg! I've been sick the past week and over the crop weekend...just a cold, but congested and I could tell my brain wasn't working at full speed because I could NOT come up with titles that pleased me! However, it was good for me to use just descriptive titles and get over my compulsion. Journaling is super important for me. But I don't enjoy doing it, so I try to keep it on the short side. Plus, If it's too long, it won't be read! I look for a different angle than "this happened". A background story or a small tidbit that helps me remember what life was like in this moment. When I go back to layouts I did 15 years ago, I love the ones that have journaling so much more than the ones that don't.

When I go back to layouts I did 15 years ago, I love the ones that have journaling so much more than the ones that don't. Me too! I am happier with the older layouts that have the most journaling but I do what I feel like in the moment when I'm making the layout and call it good. It's suppose to be fun and sometimes, I really don't have a lot to say or what I do have to say doesn't go with the photos. I do try and take weekly notes. When I'm making pages, I refer back to my notes (hit or miss how well I do, I think for February I had maybe 3 days with some notes but for March I have almost every day) and then at the end of they year, I print the notes and tuck them in my album. They are usually more personal notes, so things not likely to make it on a journal but I may want to re-read in a future year. Love the permission to not do a title. Thanks AussieMeg! Sometimes coming up with a title is pain. Next time, I think I'll just skip it.

For me, journalling is the BEST part! I agree that it can be. But what if you're scrapping the 425th time you've taken your dog for a walk during COVID lockdown, or the tenth visit to the beach this year? I don't want to make up journalling just for the hell of it. Sometimes I just want to whack a date on it and call it good!

I don't want to make up journalling just for the hell of it. Sometimes I just want to whack a date on it and call it good! I think the difference for me is that I wouldn't scrap those things as separate pages. I'd take my favorite 6-8 photos from walking the dog during COVID & write about how it felt to be outside, how it gave me an appreciation for it, etc. Same with the beach photos - I'd choose some from the various pics & write about 'great beach season this year... highlights included... etc etc.' Not saying your way is wrong at all. That's just the way I do it. Even with Christmas, I have some layouts that are, say, various gift openings throughout the year, with stories of things like what Santa means to us, how we hand out gifts, how dad helps clean up, etc. All the things that are tradition, in one layout, with pictures that span a time frame. That all said - sometimes I'm a longer journaller, sometimes it's just a few sentences.

I am definitely a teller of stories on my pages, it's rare that I have a page with little or no journalling, but there are absolutely times I just want to scrap a cute photo of the cat, or something that just doesn't require more than what can be said in a title. There's a place for both in my album, but like kitbop, when I look back at my older layouts, it's the ones with journalling that that I typically love most.

Journaling is above the photos in importance to me. When I go back to my old scrapbooks- or I see my girls looking at them- we are pouring over the journaling to remember the little details and funny saying etc- things we wouldn’t have remembered if it was just the pictures. I do PL now so my pages combine random daily things with more event type things and each picture doesn’t get a whole story but it does get a mention and then more details about certain pictures. I certainly see what more traditional scrappers are saying about not every page having that type of journaling- I had some like that, too, when I scrapped 12x12. But more often they did have journaling- I’d combine a fav pic with a story not maybe related to that specific pic of a dd- just something I wanted to remember.
Dd1 asked me to create a scrapbook with all kinds of stories from family things (basically combining stories about traditions etc from the time I wasn’t scrapbooking). So the journaling aspect is super important to her and she wants to keep them to have my perspective on how things were, why we did them. If she wants to read that I’m going to make it for her.
Our course there’s no right or wrong but for me, without journaling I wouldn’t be interested. That’s why I love scrapbooking though- it combines three of my favorite things (journaling, pictures, and creativity/design).

I agree that the journaling is important, but I don't always like the way it looks on my pages. In my albums I have reached a compromise where I journal elsewhere, and leave most of my layouts journaling free, unless a sentence or two is included on the layout. In my travel albums, journaling is now typed on a separate page with just basic details on layouts to make sure it cross references nicely. In my chronological albums, the journaling is done in the PL portion in a pocket, and my layouts of the month follow.

I do a mix and it really depends on the photos. Some photos have stories that need lots of journaling and I put that on the front. Sometimes a title and date are enough.
For all layouts I mark on the back the names, date and location the photo was taken.

The first thing to remember is THERE ARE NO RULES IN SCRAPBOOKING! I like to journal and I like to read the journaling on other people's pages. I have had it drummed into me the importance of dates and names. But I don't always do that. Sometimes I just write a sentence or two about my feelings about an event or photo.
Some of my pages are all about the story. Some more about "This happened." How much detail or how much of my feelings and impressions about the people and events in the photos depends on why I am scrapping those photos. If I have alot to say, I may include an envelope on the back of the page or a photo with a sheet of journaling in it.
When my dgk's first look at my scrapbook pages, they are often focused on the photos of themselves. But the older ones looking back love to read the journaling and talk about the experience. And the younger ones I was with this past month were full of questions: "Tell me a STORY, Gramma!" But they didn't want made-up ones. They wanted stories of themselves and siblings and parents and cousins and grandparents. These guys, when they are more into reading, will be poring over what I have written on those pages, too.

I was at a weekend crop this past weekend and was just commenting to my friends that I love to journal on layouts but like to use journaling cards - which are hard to find! I usually put who/what/where unless there was something special to remember and then I add that fact too.

I usually put who/what/where unless there was something special to remember and then I add that fact too. scrappymeg I like to make my own journaling cards; sometimes from Project Life cards, that I have altered or stamped in some way, and sometimes from paper, stickers, die cuts, etc. I have a few journaling stamps with lines if I feel like I need that too. I do journal on every LO, but mostly it is just a snippet from what was happening in the moment. Even if it is just another beach day, I will tie it to something else, like it being close to DD's birthday or what might be coming up, or just past. My journaling gets a bit rambly, lol. I also like to, for trip or specific albums, make a journaling page. It is sometimes the last page in the album. This is where I literally write all the how's and whys of the trip. I also like doing it as the first or second page, after the title page, as it's like the prologue to a story.

The layouts I like the best from my past are the ones with journaling on them. It doesn't have to be anything long and involved but I do want to know the story. I moved away from that in more recent years and that was a big draw to me moving to a PL format. I wanted to be able to jot down more everyday details.

Over the years I’ve been a very basic journal scrapbooker. I tend to have the basics- date, who (if I remember) and a generic/general few sentences. Looking back I wish I had more. More emotion, thoughts. Quotes, so I’m trying to go that direction which PL styles has helped some with. In the past I scrapbooked with a memory keeping, but also artistic flare to meet my creative desire. Now I’m doing more memory keeping with some artistic. I enjoy both, but as my kids are growing up they appreciate the journaling the most and have asked for more of that. So I will gladly do that for the as it’s their memories too.

I'm not picky about lines or none but just need space. I see alot of Project Life cards but most are either fully printed or have a big saying in the middle. I do use up any that have empty space in the middle, but my collection is getting very small If you see any I'd love a link if you have a second

tealpaperowl I will try to find some and post pics. ETA, found some! I tried to show some different ones. The Hamilton ones are more of diecuts, but I did still journal on the tea box. The first one I made for a beach page I was doing, so matched the colors. The size is just slightly over 3x4 because I wanted that teal-ish mat. I made the 2nd one for our trip to the Black Hills, and the 3rd are ones I made for Hamilton, the last one is a LO for one of our challenges, so I did the journaling box with a stamp and then cut it out with a die. Was also thinking you could put an ISO on the for sale or trade board, or on the main board for PL cards, I see people dumping them all the time. One person said she just threw some away in the recycling b/c she had too many. So you might get a bunch that way! 7193A8EB-B420-4CB5-90C0-E19C4FF9A04B by K Mage, on Flickr horse pic by K Mage, on Flickr 20190513_185659 by K Mage, on Flickr D01C5CB0-51BA-437B-A4AD-983B1DF68BF5 by K Mage, on Flickr
