I have never been a fan of my own handwriting on a layout, sure I have heaps of my earlier pages that I have written on but over the years I learned more towards printing my journalling out. During the last few years I went out and bought a typewriter, I was finding that I was wasting a lot of time with the computer option and often it would not print straight or I would get measurements off. The typewriter for me was just the best option. I do write on some layouts especially in my travellers notebooks/junk journals but fro my layouts I just prefer the neater look of typed journaling.

I was initially inspired to start scrapbooking waaaaay back in ‘98 when I was expecting my first baby. I had always enjoyed reading the stories and bits of info in my baby book (thanks Mon!)!and was excited to find out scrapbooking and memory keeping was a thing where I could combine photos and stories. My kids love to read their scrapbook stories.
I enjoy writing and can get wordy 🤣 so I usually use my computer to keep things neat and get more words in a space. There are very, very few LOs in my albums that do not have journaling.

I started scrapbooking so I could tell stories. The journaling might not always make it onto the layout but the intention is there. Sometimes a layout doesn’t need a lot of story tho. So I guess I’m all over the board.

I feel like journaling cards are everywhere!! Is it hard to find plain w/ lines to write, or ones that are empty/lined in the middle with graphics along the border? The ones that have some empty space in the middle to write! I'm not picky about lines or none but just need space. I see alot of Project Life cards but most are either fully printed or have a big saying in the middle. I do use up any that have empty space in the middle, but my collection is getting very small If you see any I'd love a link if you have a second So for example... Simple Stories comes out with a Journal Elements cut apart for their collections. Doodlebug has them too, Ex1, Ex2, Ex3 - recently each collection has been getting one. 49 and Market journal card cut apart paper P13 have some mini creative pads that would work well for journaling There are also tag cut apart sheets: AC, Simple Stores and Doodlebug all make them. SB.com has plain lined cards

I also prefer to journal on a designated spot or card. I have tried journaling directly on the page and I usually end up covering it up with a card and re-writing the journaling.

"A picture is worth a thousand words, but a picture without words is a million questions". Said somebody. I don't like journaling, but I enjoy showing off my album. A trick I learned was to go thru my album and talk into a recorder to develop an outline for journaling. I then use my computer to make words to fit in spaces available to accept the notes.

I do journal but sometimes it is just a date, name or place. Otherwise I tell more of a story but I rarely have lots of journalling.
So many times my photos just don't need it. For example: Evelyn's first smiles. 2 weeks March 2022. I mean what else does it need? I probably already used a So Sweet or Too Cute sticker on the page.

I hardly every journal and I should. I'm looking at photos from when the kids were little and I can't remember things about them.
I usually leave space for journaling but then I leave it blank. Maybe one of these days I'll sit down and try to get journaling on my old layouts.
Sometimes a good photo is just a good photo, though. No need for journaling.

What would be the point? I have 8 kids who have spawned or accumulated 36 grandkids, and I have no idea about great-grandkids. At age 81, I journal for people I may never know, who may just want a little insight of their family history.

I fell in love with scrapbooking because I've always wondered about the people who came and went before me. What were they thinking? What did they do day to day? What were they striving towards? I'd have been so excited to find a diary.
I'm still learning how to get to the point when I'm writing. I tend to run out of space. When I started in the late 80's, I didn't do too much journaling. I wish I had. I've forgotten a lot of what I thought I never would. So now I journal for myself and others.

I find this so fascinating! I don't even bother creating a page any longer if there isn't journaling. I've been scrapbooking for over 20 years and when I go back to my earlier pages, I am often frustrated by how little journaling I did. Yeah, the photo is great and all but I would rather understand the details behind that photo. And so, once I realized that I began to include it on all of my pages. And I have certainly hidden journaling in some cases but I almost never create a page without journaling of some kind. Now my pages are much more story-focused ... I build the page design around my journaling.

I don’t like my hand writing, but it is quicker and easier than using the computer! I have always tried to journal so that someone could look through my books without me needing to explain anything. So I try to think, if I were showing someone this LO what would I tell them about it.

* On a few of my layouts, 'journaling' consists of a page title and date. * However, most of my layouts have at a minimum a few more facts, like names and location. * If there is something I want to say about the photos or event -- other than date, names, location -- I add it, usually in a journaling box, journaling strips, or written directly on the page. It is often a single phrase or sentence about the significance of the photos. This is probably the most common type of journaling that I do. * If I don't want the journaling seen either because its more personal or distracts from the layout or there is not enough room, I will do a journaling card tucked behind a photo. * Sometimes the page starts with the journaling, for example, a "Currently" or "Year in Review" page, where the photos are secondary to what I'm trying to say.

I'm not much of a journaler but I have been shifting a bit. I also do not really care for my handwriting. I'm trying to get over that.
But like many others, I will hide journaling in a pocket or behind a flip up.
I've been trying to change a bit. I did something recently where I printed out the journaling, cut it into strips, then stuck them down. I think it looks really cool and adds a pop of color to the page. I also just wrote a whole paragraph and printed it out at the bottom of the page. Who would have thought!
On the same day, I did another page with no journaling at all. The pictures are of us riding Spaceship Earth. So I used stickers to spell out spaceship earth then put "The Best" on there. I had nothing else to say.
I've really loved reading all the responses in this thread.

I feel like journaling cards are everywhere!! Is it hard to find plain w/ lines to write, or ones that are empty/lined in the middle with graphics along the border? I definitely had a hard time finding plain ones. I am slowly using up a pack of 3x4 and 4x6 PL Grid cards. When I sorted my PL cards, if there were cards that had a simple border or small image but had a grid or lined background, I organized them with my grid cards.

I should have finished reading the thread. Now my pages are much more story-focused ... I build the page design around my journaling. I wish I could think that way. It's hard for me to even think of what stories are worth recording since no one looks at my pages.
