Last night I was looking for embellishments for a page, and pulled out my bin of flair buttons and noticed a lot of them had brown spots on them. I dissected one, and while the back of the button was bright and shiny, the opposite side -- the side under the paper and plastic -- was completely covered with rust. All in all, I had 5 packages of October Afternoon flair buttons, all with rust spots, and 3 packages from an Etsy shop with rust spots. I really loved those buttons! I plan to go through my albums and remove any flair from those sources. My flair buttons from Studio Calico and Basic Gray are rust-free -- not that they won't rust in the future, but they appear to be better made. All this to say that if you have or have used flair buttons from OA or an Etsy shop, you might want to check for rust. I checked to see if this had been a topic of a 2 Peas Refugees thread previously, and found one from 2017, so thought it might be worth mentioning for those (like me) who might have missed that earlier thread.

The 2017 thread was mine. I don't use flair anymore and threw all mine out Some of it was cute too!

Yep, I threw out all kinds of flair because it was rusted. Such a bummer.

Someone had a theory that the rusted flair might have been caused by liquid adhesive or the type of adhesive used.

Sorry, I meant when the flair was made. On another message board, someone peeled back the rusted flair. There was rust on the back of the paper where it came in contact with the metal back of the flair. If you flip the flair over, the very back of the metal part might not have any rust. I have flair from another scrapbooker who custom made them for me. There's no rust on that flair, she didn't use adhesive. Hopefully, that makes sense.

That totally makes sense to me, especially based on the spots on my flair.

Oh, sorry - yes, your explanation does make sense. I’ve had it rust on the front side, under the coating. Also in the back around hollow metal area. Some no rust at all. I had mist all of mine in a little jar. I have o e set of OA tin pins still in the package and it looks okay, but I don’t think I’ll ever use it in scrapbooking knowing it’s vulnerable. ☹️

I was sad but tossed all mine too a couple of years ago after I noticed they started to rust. I tossed it all, expecting it to rust at some point. I need to go back and check my early albums and see if I need to pull any off though. I haven't done that yet.

Me too. Chucked most of them. Some had not rusted. Glad I didn’t purchase many. Dotty about flair says their flair are plastic backed and don’t rust.

I remember Shimelle going through her bowl of flair at some point a few years ago (?) and she also had a bunch that had rusted. I think she probably blamed the London damp. I guess it might depend on climate, but if it's the way they're made that's a real bummer. I never really liked the look of flair under a plastic page protector so I barely ever used any except on a few cards, and probably don't have any inside a pocket page.

This is a timely reminder as I was flipping through an album last weekend and noticed the flair had all rusted. It's frustrating for sure. OA and ones I bought from Etsy are the worst offenders in my stash, I still have some that haven't rusted that I've had just as long, although I don't use it often now.

Quite a few of mine have rusted, too. I threw out the Two Peas ones years ago. I just found some flairs in my old Felicity Jane supplies, and I'm tempted to use them since they go so well with the other elements. They seem ok for now, so I'll take a chance. If anyone has any experience with the FJ flair badges, please let me know!

I had some that rusted a while ago as well so got rid of them. I really don't use them anymore now.

I would agree that it is possible (and likely) that adhesive used in the making of the buttons caused them to rust, since there are others that did not rust. Thanks for sharing that theory.

I went through a little box of embellishments today, where I had several packages of flair. October Afternoon still okay, Studio Calico looks like it might be starting to turn… and three packs or Ormolu were dotted with rust and tossed out.
This is only notable because the last time I went through that box, maybe last year, they were all okay. I thought these ones could be considered safe by now.

Ah man, I have used tons of flair on my layouts. I don't have it in me to check right now, I'll do it later.
