First, thanks all! Good advice! Loydene, you were mostly right. Maybe the internet has spoiled me, not sure. But they did not have hardly anything new, but no really cool old stuff either. Lots of Photo Play, lots of gnomes, lots of stamps. I was hoping they would have a bit of Sun Chaser in, but no such luck. It was a nice store but TBH not too much caught my eye. I got the 6x8 pad of Simple Stories Full Bloom; as kitbop suggested, some stuff might look better in person and that absolutely did. Very cheery without being sickly sweet. Also a few sheets of Fernwood that I was missing and the Prima Golden Desert journaling notecards. That's all! I budgeted 50 dollars and spent 22. The other store, despite its website stating it was open, was actually closed. Sad! However it was good to spend time with a friend and the day was nice for a drive. babylou, we went to Eau Claire, WI. Thanks everyone!! A friend of mine who used to scrap and is just getting back into it wants to take a little road trip tomorrow (about 90 min from where we live) to go to a town that has 2 (!!!) scrapbook stores in it. Wooohooo!! However: I do not need a dang thing. I have loads of paper, have my April BOBW kit I made, bits and bobs, washi, stamps, ink....etc. It's not exactly about the money...it's more about how much stuff does one person need and could that money be better used elsewhere... However, we do not have a scrapbook store in the Twin Cities proper. Yes, there is one in Plymouth (Anchor Paper, love u guys) and one in Pine City, on the way "up north" (shout out to Marnie and Ron!) but not in the cities. Unless I missed it, but I don't think so. So this is kind of a big deal. So tell me, what would you do, and how do you tell the little devil on your shoulder "No!" when they are whispering, "But you don't have the whole Fernwood collection..."

OK, in all seriousness...you need more Fernwood. Don't walk in with an "all or nothing" attitude. Them's fightin' words and if you cave you might cave hard. Walk in with a firm budget and the attitude that you might find some things that are different in person than online. Seeing things in person helps me make wiser choices (I recently passed on 2 whole collections that were in my online cart, but I got to see them at my LSS and realized they were NOT for me). You may find some things that you didn't realize WERE good for your style! Have fun!

If you don't take money you will find something you actually need and be kicking yourself for not being able to buy it.
I would go in with a set amount you are willing to spend up to and stick with it when are you going to get to do this again?

kitbop, what did you pass on, just curious...Good advice though. I am excited to see things in person. Having never been to these stores, I will be interested to see what they keep in stock, if they are very current or have a lot of old stuff. Colors always look different in person than they do online. They are out of state, so that will be interesting too.

I say go and allow yourself to buy one thing. Then that's it.

It's not exactly about the money...it's more about how much stuff does one person need and could that money be better used elsewhere... LOL...I was no help. My vote was tied between going whole hog and taking a small amount of cash. I voted for telling you to go whoel hog. Yes, I am an enabler I also have way too much stuff, so I get where you are coming from. I will justify my response by saying that I am spoiled for LSSs. If this is a special opportunity for you I say embrace it and have fun. Keep in mind what you have and if you find something you love, go ahead and treat yourself. I also try to find things that will make it more fun for me to use your existing stash. Stop in after and let us know what you found! Have a great time!

I also try to find things that will make it more fun for me to use your existing stash. Ooooooo, this is great advice. In fact, I am going to take 20 min and make a little list of things that maybe would help me use other stuff more, along with some notes, like "If I found October Afternoon or Basic Grey for .20 a sheet"-I know, Magical Scrapbooking Christmas. But I honestly don't know what kind of stores these are, so maybe they have a ton of old stuff on clearance, who knows?

I’m able to shop in person at a scrapbook store generally twice a year. I will usually just buy anything that catches my eye while I’m there. Everything else I buy is online except for one monthly kit and adhesive. If you really want to practice restraint set a budget and stick to it. I probably would but whatever I wanted, though. LOL!

Sorry but when it comes to scrapbook stuff I buy what I want if I think I can use it. I would not even want to limit myself.
I find often times it's easier to not buy when I know I can.

I was at my LSS a couple of weekends ago and I set a budget for myself. I ended up not even hitting my budget so it is possible!

In my opinion, there's no such thing as "too much scrapbook stuff - too many scrapbook products". "Need" and "want" are two totally different things. If you're going all that way, might as well treat yourself to some goodies. I'm a bad influence!

The poll has expired, but I want to put in my two cents worth. My vote is to go the whole hog! I can't remember the last time I saw an actual brinks and mortar scrapbook shop. I don't even paper scrap anymore, and I reckon I'd still "go the whole hog" hahaha.

Yes, let us know what you bought! Poll is closed, but I would have voted to “go whole hog.” We haven’t had any LSS in my area for over a decade, so if I am traveling and can go to an LSS, I don’t hold back . It’s so much better to see things in person, especially paper designs and colors, than shopping online. Show us pics if you can!

I'm wondering what town you're going to that has 2 stores?! I live in northern Iowa and thought I knew most of the stores in the midwest area, so I'm curious what I've missed! LOL!

Dang, I missed this whole thread. I would have suggested that you buy whatever you like, and if you feel like it's too much, consider it a gift down the line. Mother's Day, birthday, Christmas, whatever. Wrap it up and enjoy it later. I gave myself the gift of Shimelle almost a year after she was clearanced out! Can't wait to hear what you bought

Way too late to help ya out, kmage . But my take on it is this: If this is an adventure, entered into infrequently, then enjoy the day. Don't spoil it by sticking to an artificial budget. Start with a list of needs, but let the products you see and touch guide your wants for the day. If this is going to be a regular occurance--once a week, once a month, every two months, whatever--then budget what you can spend each trip.

I missed the poll also - but Hey, you are young. You have a lot of time to use it all.

I'd totally go but fully expect that the store will disappoint. I haven't been in a real scrapbook store in years -- they just don't seem to be around anywhere I am -- but I can't say I miss them since I'd been experiencing that disappointment for some time! But I'd still go -- to see whatever products they might have IRL -- and to enjoy a fun lunch with a friend in another town!

Good for you! "Full Bloom" is a line I want but haven't seen in person - glad to know you liked it, makes me more confident. In store I skipped "Play all day" - I thought the B-sides looked great online, but in person it was all far too cutesy for me. The new Vicki B. line (Sweet Shop) grabbed me however, which surprised me because online I didn't like it as much.

Glad you had fun and didn't break the bank, kmage . I think for me the deciding factor for spending is my mood. Some days everything looks amazing and fun and I want it all. Other days, even something I have been dreaming about for months does not seem to be quite what I want. There are four LSS's in Edmonton, AB, (2 1/2 hour drive one way for me, and about 20-30 min trip between stores) and one of these days I want to take the time to visit them all in one day. They each have a different vibe, from unique to artsy to tried-n-true to trendy. One day this spring I need a ROAD TRIP!!!
