Sorry the ride was awful. I did my bike ride last year at this time with temps in the 90s. Every day when I was phoning home, my husband would comment that I sounded miserable. I was. Pretty much a no fun 300+ bike ride in the heat.
It's hard to plan, you sacrifice temperatures for long sunlight days.

Oh blemon I'm so sorry to read of your experience - not at all what was planned, eh? I hope you're feeling more together now and that you're more comfortable at home. Being in such temperatures makes me feel like a delicate English flower - I soon begin to droop, even without the added fun of a bike ride. Take it easy and look after yourself x

I'm happy to hear that you and your daughter enjoyed the TN process. Hopefully that will leave you with more happy memories than the ride and heat. And sending wishes for a small ER bill... fingers crossed! Yes. Fingers crossed. I have to get my insurance company to their billing. Hopefully it won't be too bad. And yes, she really loved the TN! Every day had a different template so it allowed for structure if we needed it but also flexibility. I told her she could cover anything up with a photo if she wanted. Really fun. We did have a good time. I just rode 100 fewer miles. Yes! It's so hard to plan. I love bikepacking and we'll definitely do it again. We will just do things differently and have better contingency plans. It's exhausting but you get to see so much since you're going slower than if you were in a car. Oh blemon I'm so sorry to read of your experience Thank you! My genes are all Eastern European/Polish so the heat is no longer for me, I'm afraid.

I love your book! I'm sorry you ended up in the ER. The heat is not for me, either.

blemon - That's quite an adventure! I'm glad you're okay and also am hoping for a small ER bill. Can't wait to see the finished project.

I'm so sorry your trip was during the heatwave. It sounds like you did the best you could under the circumstances but your body was probably telling you to stay home. I'm glad you already made the decision to stay in hotels on this trip. We are headed to Wisconsin for our summer trip. My husband is looking at a new bike and found what he wants in Madison & Milwaukee. Maybe we will try a piece of the Katy Trail in the fall. It's nice to hear the trail wasn't completely awful. Love the completed TN! The pictures are great and all of the stats that are included... JUST LOVE IT!

I'm hoping that I will eventually get over this but I do fear I'm going to have to be careful when it's over 90. And yes, so glad we had already booked the hotels!!! Lifesaver. I would NOT have been able to camp. No way. And we went to Wisconsin and Michigan a few years ago and it was amazing. My husband has family in Door County. So gorgeous there. And you will love the Katy Trail. It's really top notch. Thanks for the feedback on the album. It was definitely a labor of love. So glad I made the effort beforehand. So sorry your trip was a bust but oh my goodness that is one awesome notebook!! Thank you! We definitely treasure these. Except for 2020 and 2021, I have a travel album for each trip we've taken since the kid was about 5 -- some of mine go back to college. I used notebooks and filled them with journaling and ephemera.

The completed album is just gorgeous, I've loved seeing it come across my insta feed, although I'm sorry to hear it wasn't an entirely positive experience for you.

and also am hoping for a small ER bill Just over $2900. I got the bill today. Called with my insurance info. Fingers crossed. The card says on it that medical expenses outside the state have to be pre-approved. Um yeah, next time I need to go to the ER after midnight, I'll give y'all a call. The completed album is just gorgeous, I've loved seeing it come across my insta feed This is just a beautiful project!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

I love your TN!
June in Missouri is definitely not the time to bike the Katy. There’s a reason we call Missouri “Misery.” It’s so much better in the fall, especially with the fall colors along the bluffs of the MO River (especially along Rocheport). Hopefully you can come back when the Rock Island Spur is completed and makes a loop with the Katy. I’m glad to hear the trail surface was good. Missouri’s State Park system is one of the best in the country. 😀
