I think I’m missing something obvious, but Googling hasn’t helped me figure out what it is.
I have a HP Laser printer but can’t get foil to stick to anything I print from it.
I have a Scotch laminator, Minc and Deco foils. Neither foil worked - not even a little. I scribbled on the same paper with a Heidi Swapp toner marker and both foils stuck completely first go. All I can think is that it’s the HP printer/toner, but a bunch of websites say they use or recommend an HP if someone wants to get a printer for home use.
Are there different types of laser toner - do I need to buy a specific type of foil-friendly toner? I’m under the impression that toner works and inkjet or sublimation doesn’t, and it’s that simple. I know that printing in b&w on a colour photocopier doesn’t always mean you’re getting the toner that’s needed, but this is an inexpensive home laser printer that doesn’t even have the option for colour so i don’t think that’s it.
Any suggestions on what I’m being oblivious to? 😂

A suggestion in case you haven't already tried: the laminator needs to heat up for 20-30 minutes, well past when the "ready" light comes on.

Yeah, it works with the toner marker, same paper, both foils, so I don’t think there’s anything off with the laminator. It has a preheat(?) thing where you can put anything through until it’s up to cooking temperature…lol

I don't have any suggestions for you other than what Ryann said, but just to let you know - I have an HP laser printer and I have no problem with foiling with it. I have the Minc and I have to heat it up (to #4 out of 6 settings) to make it work. It doesn't work on lower heat. I've used both Minc and Deco foils. Maybe there's a difference between toner from a printer and toner from a marker?

Go into your printers advanced settings, look for print preferences and set the print density to it’s maximum. I have an inexpensive Canon laser printer and don’t have any trouble getting the foiling to work but I always increase the density so I get a ready saturated image.

I heat up my laminator for at least 20 minutes and change my printer settings to 600 dpi which is the max on my printer.
