I feel like I have dreamed of this day for years but I seem so unprepared. My new Silhouette Cameo just arrived and I would love to know what accessories you can't live without. Silhouette America has a great sale on right now and I would like to take advantage of it. I plan to start out working with paper crafts but I would love to get into some home decor, glass etching, and my daughters would love me to be able to cut words to add to bows that they make and sell. Do you have a favorite blog that you follow that is dedicated to the Cameo? Is there anything that you wish you knew when you got your machine? Thanks in advance for all your tips and suggestions.

I just watched video after video until I felt like I was ready to cut something. I started with paper, but really you can start with anything. If you want to cut home decor, then you might want to look into different types of vinyl. You can't really buy quality vinyl in a craft store. I buy all of mine online. Here is some info on vinyl.

There is a Cameo master thread here. That will help you with some things. You also might want to join the Silhouette Plus forum. They have free tutorials and answers to just about any question you could possibly have. They are a free site. Silhouette School has a blog, I think. You can also find lots of ideas on Pinterest.
I usually get my regular vinyl locally from sign shops. One shop gives it to me free. I use it on glass, as well as for etching. I just buy my etching cream with a coupon at a local craft store. For the bows, you might want to use iron on vinyl, but it might depend on what your bows are made of.

htstepper and scrapnnana thank you! It is good to know that you can use regular vinyl from a sign shop. My husband works for a wide-format printer and they have leftovers that he asked if I could use. The bows are grosgrain ribbon for the most part. I will take a look at the resources that you both recommended. I have cut a few cards and envelopes so far this morning and need to go find a crown image from the Silhouette store for some cheer awards that I am making for my daughters' cheer banquet.

General tips....keep it out and hooked up so that you can use it easily...if it's not available, I find, it doesn't get used. Also, Kerri Bradford had amazing classes for using the Cameo....very worthwhile....I've taken 4 of her classes and learned so much! You can cut fabric (to make bows or other items) with the Cameo....you just need the fabric blade and the interfacing for your fabric of choice.... You can design your own tags and other embellishments when you get more used to it....this machine is amazing!
Congratulations on your new toy! I LOVE mine and use it all the time. I am constantly learning new things to do with it!

Make sure that you load the mat correctly. So many people cut through their mat the first time because of loading incorrectly. You have two choices each time you load and if you go too quickly, it is easy to do the wrong one.
Have fun!

I have taken 5 of her classes, each class I learn something new, she is a wealth of information. I recommend her classes to everyone I know who gets a Cameo. Well worth the money.

gloryjoy and aliwinn, thanks for the recommendations for Kerri's classes. I will take a look into them. I have played around some and have really enjoyed working with it so far. It is so convenient and easy. It will be a permanent fixture on my desk. I can't wait to spend more time playing with it this weekend. Thank you all!
