Last night we had two tornado warnings. On my phone it says "Emergency Alert" then under that "National Weather Service: TORNADO". And on the left is the symbol of a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on it. This was accompanied by that emergency siren-type noise. My dh and my dd did not get this alert. All three of us have iPhones. It didn't matter so much for my dh since he was here in the house with me (although it might matter at some point if he was alone) but dd lives in an apartment RIGHT where the cloud rotation was seen. She doesn't even have regular tv service where she could turn on the news. Although she wouldn't have known to do that anyway. She had no idea of the warning until I told her. A friend on FB said maybe it was because I had the National Weather Service app downloaded. But besides the fact that I don't think I do (I just use the default weather app that came with my phone, although maybe that is NWS?) I always thought these emergency announcements were automatic for everyone just like Amber Alerts are. Anyone have any idea why they wouldn't have gotten the alerts? Is there somewhere in our phones where these can be turned off? Dh knows less about his phone than I do so I'm sure he didn't do it, but maybe it came that way (it's new-to-him, from work). And I can't believe dd would have turned them off because she's a worrier. I'll ask both of them when they wake up. Any other ideas?

Have them go into: -Settings -Notifications: scroll to the very bottom of the list -Amber alerts -Emergency alerts--tap and go into this to turn on -Public service alerts

I just googled and found this:.
Turn Government Alerts on or off By default, Government Alerts are turned on for your device.* When you receive a government alert, you hear a special sound that's similar to an alarm. If you want to turn these alerts on or off, follow these steps: Go to Settings > Notifications. Scroll to the very bottom of the screen. Under Government Alerts, turn the type of alert on or off.
I get them on my phone too. I just got a mandatory evacuation alert for the local canyons the other day. I am quite a ways away from the canyon so I guess they don’t just alert the canyon people themselves. I had to look it up to see that they were concerned with flooding. We only had one day of rain so that area must have had more than I got. My phone is downstairs on the charger and I am snuggled under the covers with three cats and my dog sleeping all around or on me so I can’t check my phone right now without upsetting the herd. I don’t know why the other two phones didn’t get the same alert unless they both accidentally turned this off. Check the above instructions on both phones to see if their settings are just turned off for some reason.
**Oops. Repeat info,here.

Interesting that you got the alert even though you're not right next to the canyon. The first warning was for the next county over from mine (the one where elaine lives ) and at first we wondered if maybe dh didn't get it because his phone has a DC area code whereas mine has a Northern Virginia one. But then we learned that dd didn't get it either so that didn't make sense. Plus, given how close DC is to that part of Northern Virginia it didn't make sense that he wouldn't get it. -- Well... he's awake now but getting ready for work. I will have him check his notifications settings.

So dh just checked his phone and all the notification settings are turned on. However, he said that it might have something to do with the security settings on his phone...he said that their phones are set somehow so that they're not locatable. it's a State Department thing for the safety of employees overseas. Or something. Anyway, he thinks that's the answer, and he's going to ask their Tech Dudes today. That doesn't explain dd, but she hasn't replied to my text yet so I suspect she's still asleep.

I got the alert in the middle of my online class last night - literally 60 seconds after I commented in our online chat that it was minsooning outside. It also came on my Apple Watch (I have cellular on my watch). My home office is on the top floor and I was debating going down to the basement, but didn’t want to miss class.

I have the same issue last night. Tornado warnings here, my husband got the alert, but my son and I didn't. All Apple phones. I checked my notifications and they are all on.

Mine does the same thing. I woke up one morning and checked FB, and a bunch of my neighbors were talking about they were hiding in their basement from storms/tornados. Me: slept thru it and NO ONES phones had one alert. We all have apple phones. I looked into it, and my stuff was turned on, but I still dont get the alerts. I have no idea.

I have all my emergency alerts turned off. They just blast me out of bed during the middle of the night.
Not once when an actual emergency has directly affected me has an alert gone off. I have been in the direct path of 3 tornadoes. Nothing.
If Des Moines, which is 2 hours away, might get a cloud going over - everything goes off. I did have my location services on.
We are in an area that is poorly covered by NWS or any of the TV weather services. I do not rely on them.
When we had terrible weather coming in Mid December - I found a guy on TikTok who is a meteorologist who covered what was coming at me 100 times better than anything else that is supposed be be keeping me safe. He isn't from my state.
I don't want Amber alerts or anything going off on my phone.

I’m in NoVA too, and had to turn on the county alerts at the county website. At least I think so. If you’re in Fairfax County: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/topics/alerts Guessing other NoVA counties have the same opt-in site. I apologize if this is a repeat. I didn’t read all the posts before posting because mulch delivery is 5 minutes away.

I turn them all off except the Presidential one, which you cannot turn off (at least on Android OS). They always seem to come in the middle of the night and scare the shit out of me

I'm also in Northern VA and was in choir practice last night during the weather alert. We were singing and suddenly a lot of people's phones went off with the alert at the same time - mine did not (Android). I'll have to check my settings and make sure I've got these notifications turned back on now that we're edging back to the severe weather time of year. You do have to have location services turned on to be able to get the alerts, so yes state dept & many other gov't-issued phones will have location services off by default for security.
I found it interesting that for the people who got the alert -- it did NOT tell them where the tornado was. We were in a safe place (stone church/lower level) in Alexandria, but very near to the border with Arlington and there was nothing in the alert indicating the location of the tornado that was spotted (supposedly "nearby"). So everyone was frantically checking their phones before we left the building.

That sounds likely... if your location settings are off, you're not going to receive location-dependent notifications.
