Probably a dumb question, but honestly I cannot remember what I did the last time I upgraded my phone (which was about 100 years ago ) -- I have an iPhone and Verizon Wireless.... should I go to the Apple Store or to a Verizon store for a new one? If it doesn't matter then I'd much rather go to the Apple Store since the Apple people are always helpful. But if I'd have to then go to a Verizon store after getting the phone at the Apple Store then I might as well just go to one place, Verizon, and get it over with. Yes, I googled. But I'm wondering what your own personal experience is.

You can do either. When you buy a new phone all one needs to do it to transfer the sim card from one phone to the other. All your network details are on that sim card. Just make sure everything you need to keep on your old phone is backed up to the cloud.

I went to ATT but our local store is great - you don't transfer sim cards with new phone - you just put them next to each other and everything transfers.

I just got a new iPhone a couple weeks ago. I tried to go through Apple - and it looks like it would have been a breeze- they had an option where I would pick my carrier online and buy phone and they’d mail my phone to me all set. Except it turns out we have a business account without cell service and Apple doesn’t deal with those well. So we had to go directly through t mobile. They mailed it to me and I just popped my SIM card out and the phone sat next to each other and transferred everything and I logged into iCloud and done. Very simple.

Ds is the only one of us with an iphone and we always get his new phone at the apple store. It is a very easy process.

I have done both and it goes fine - but i will share with you, the best experience i had was getting my new phone at Best Buy. Super easy to work with and they sometimes give a rebate (BB Gift card).
Good luck whatever you choose!

Go to the Apple store. They will help you transfer your data. Make sure you know your Apple ID and password. Make an appointment for faster service.

With our last phones, we went to Best Buy. It was the easiest purchase we’ve had with phones.

I dreaded going to the Verizon store. They always played some game. Like here is this free Bose Bluetooth speaker, or here is this free iPad, but there is some catch (like you had to get the IPad with cell service, and the cell service was only an additional $5 per month but you had to commit to that service for 2 years). And if you turned down the freebies, there was some catch on the phone price. We started going to Best Buy or the Apple Store and it was much more pleasant. It’s been about 5-6 years since we stopped going to Verizon, so I’m not sure if they still do that.

I always get my phone from Apple. My local cell service store is beyond frustrating. I am better off doing it myself.
That said - I had to just make sure I bought a phone from Apple that was compatible with my carrier. So do make sure you have that particular phone.
In order to activate the phone, I had to call my cellular carrier and have them activate it. Even though I changed the SIM card - I still had to have them activate my phone. It was a very simple process, but I had to call back a week later because calls were not coming in. That could have just been a fluke. Everything else was working.
The transfer of data from one phone to the other was a snap. As the other said - just sit them next to each other and follow the process. Going iPhone to iPhone is so easy.

Yes, this sort of thing is exactly why I posted to ask about everyone's experiences...I just don't trust people in stores like the Verizon store or others like that. I do trust Apple. I recently bought a new laptop at the Apple Store and the guy steered me to one that was NOT their most expensive after I explained what I'd be using it for. He said I could spend the extra money if I wanted but I didn't need all that was in that model for how I was going to be using my laptop. So I trust them not to try to sell me a bunch of stuff.

First, I'm a huge Apple fan. My company builds custom iOS apps. I'm very invested in the Apple ecosystem.
That said... I think the Apple Store experience sucks these days. You have to make an appointment, or have a huge wait, and I don't think the staff is nearly as knowledgeable as they used to be. I no longer go in-store unless I absolutely have to.
I haven't bought a phone in person for many years. I've ordered our family's last several phones through Verizon online, because they offer much more generous trade-in allowances than Apple does. It's painless. My new phone arrives, I back up my old phone, wipe it, drop it in a pre-paid envelope and mail it back.
I was not planning to upgrade to a 13 Pro Max, but Verizon offered me so much trade-in on my 12 Pro that I couldn't resist. If I went through Apple, the phone would have cost about $200 more.

We get our new phones from the Apple store, either online or in person. Couple of times we picked it up at the store and a couple of times we had it mailed to is. Both were hassle free and easy. When Verizon used to have the 1 free every 2 years deal, we had to get it from the Verizon store. I can’t remember ever having any problems.

Question: will the Notes that are stored on my phone-not in the Cloud-transfer?

We’ve always gone to our Verizon store. No issues or problems. The Apple store is in the mall, a bit of a pain with parking, making an appointment, still having to wait, too many people…it’s a zoo there always.
Verizon store in the strip mall near us. Easy parking, less chaotic.

Question: will the Notes that are stored on my phone-not in the Cloud-transfer? Not unless you transfer them to iCloud first. (Let me revise to say there *are* ways you could accomplish this, but they're not nearly as simple as syncing through iCloud. You'd need to connect your phone to a Mac, do a complete backup to your Mac, and restore the new iPhone from that backup via Finder.) ETA: Actually, now that I think about it, you may be able to accomplish it with Quick Start bluetooth phone to phone transfer but I'm not certain. Quick Start is super useful but also a bit opaque in what it transfers directly and what relies on iCloud.

Question: will the Notes that are stored on my phone-not in the Cloud-transfer? I don’t think so. But I do believe that you can transfer them one-by-one after you set up your new phone. Your old phone will need to be connected to the internet.

I like that idea because I can take my time and look at all the options and think about it (and maybe text my Tech Advisor, aka my ds ). I think I'll take a look at that first! Thanks.

After the last time of dealing with the AT&T store, I’ll go to the Apple store every time. The account is in DH’s name so that we get the military discount/suspension privileges and he has me as an authorized user on the account. EVERY. DAMN.TIME. I go in there, they tell me that my husband has to come in and authorize my upgrade/changes/whatever I’m doing.
I once had my new phone out of the box and all set up, agreed to the iPad addition, and made some changes to the data plan. Then the salesman sweeps it all up and says, “Just have your DH come in and we can release the phone to you.” Um, what is this, 1950? I called their bluff and told them to change it all back to my old phone. The manager was called in and he magically found my authorization after about 15 minutes of me staring him down.
I once went through the whole process with my 15 year old who was getting his very first iphone and after all the paperwork and negotiations, told me that the phone wasn’t in stock and the new one will be in in a week. Nope, never again. Apple just sells me the new phone and it’s done.

If you are talking about the Apple Notes app, if you open it on your phone you will see there are two different file sections, on the iPhone, or in iCloud. If your notes are stored on the device, just move the notes to the iCloud section, then make sure you go into Settings then tap on your ID, then tap iCloud and make sure syncing is toggled ON for Notes. Then when you get your new iPhone and sign in with iCloud, the notes will all sync over.

That sort of stuff makes me so mad. grrrr It irritates me so much. When we move back to the States, I may change to Verizon. I’ll price them out and then decide. We don’t have any phones on a payment plan now, so it would be a good time to change. Although they all have their own issues!

I ordered and paid for the phones online and went to the local store to pick them up. That was the end of my interaction with anyone in the store

I usually do it with Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile because we tend to upgrade when there is a deal on the phones, like the 2 for 1 DS and I had on the last upgrade. I also change our services provider to get porting credits, etc.
A couple times both phones we wanted weren't available in the store so it was mailed to us and the set up was easy.
The one thing I've learned is to order screen protectors and cases as soon as I know which phones we are getting so I don't have to worry about dropping a naked phone while I wait for them to come in. They are so, so much cheaper online than in the stores.
