So my mom who I love dearly was questioning my potato peeling habits. I discussed this very important issue with my sister. She does the same as me. Mom thinks we are both crazy and swears she didn't raise us now. (LOL) Withholding our method for now.. So do you use a knife, a veggie/carrot peeler or something else??? I know this is a very deep subject.. please let us not fight..

Knife! DH hates how I do it, but I could never get the proper grip of a peeler on a potato. Though I can use a peeler for a carrot.

Peeler and I peel away from myself- never toward my hand. I like the basic metal peelers the best

paring knife. i have greater control and speed with the knife than a peeler.

I was raised to use a vegetable peeler and challenge anyone to a peel off who says a knife is faster. FWIW, I rarely peel any vegetables these days. Beets always, but rarely anything else.

Okay.... well here is the rest of the story... My mom has always used a knife and she can peel a potato like no other. She is right underneath the skin with no loss to the potato, and usually can cut the skin without breaking it. She was watching me peel potatoes and said "what the hell are you doing?".. I was just using the little peeler just peeling away and I am not good at it... I was like "WHAT? I am using a VEGETABLE PEELER peeling a VEGETABLE".
She is getting all hot and holier than thou on me.. I was like I am calling my SISTER and I can guarantee you that she does the same as me, you little missy smarty pants mamma. Sure enough, sister is the same as me. Mom was like "WHO the hell raised you two like that?" LOL... She was like if you were around me, you would be using a knife.. I was like MOTHER, I am normal, you are the weird one. Why do they make vegetable peelers in the first place?
We all got a big chuckle out of it... thought I would share.. my sister and I are VERY close with mom and we give her a hard time.. lol.. but she dishes it right back.

I'm not coordinated enough to use a knife I use a peeler ... Me EITHER... I can have a huge potato and use a knife and be left with a little golf ball sized potato. And cussing it out.

peeler here - growing up mum used a peeler and dad could peel a potato or an apple with a knife in one continuous strip. My peeler was in the dishwasher mid-cycle today and I ended up peeling apples with a paring knife - let's just say, I didn't inherit dad's skills.
[I also rarely peel - carrots, yes, beets, yes, potatoes only if I'm mashing which is rare)

I use a vegetable peeler for both. But I peel carrots away from myself and potatoes towards myself! My Pampered Chef peeler must be 20 years old or so and it still works great.

It is funny, but I peel apples with a knife, but I’ve never tried it with veggies. I always use a peeler for veggies. I don’t know why.

I tried once to peel potatoes with a paring knife and that didn't end well for the potato, or what was left of the potato when I was done.

My MIL uses a knife for potatoes and takes half the potato with the skin (I'm only slightly exaggerating). Then makes fun of me for using the peeler? I'm EXTREMELY fast with the peeler. Messy, but fast.

Same. Only thing I can think of that I peel these days is if I’m doing mash. I don't even bother if mashing. I mostly use Yukon or other thin skinned potatoes and the skin adds a rustic flare. I loved baked whole or hassel-back apples and don't peel them. Apples do get peeled for a rare pie or crumble.

I grew up using a potato peeler.
It feels like it was every single night during my childhood rhat I had to peel potatoes, although I know my sister and I probably shared that chore until she went to nursing school and then it fell to me.
For the reason we didn't have potatoes very often once I got married and had kids. We had lots of rice and pasta.
We have potatoes much more often now because my dad is a meat, potatoes and vegetable kind of guy. Usually 3 or 4 times a week on average.
However, now I can delegate the chore to MY daughter. Who also uses a peeler.

I hate cooked fruit and have never peeled an apple.

Regular potatoes rarely get peeled but if I do I use a knife. Sweet potatoes I use a vegetable peeler. Not sure why. We very rarely eat apples, and I buy baby carrots so no peeling those.

Paring knife. My mom tossed me to the wolves at about age five and I never learned about vegetable peelers until junior high home. The teacher was horrified when I was peeling potatoes with a knife but was happy with the result when I was done. She stopped yelling at me when I completed 5 pounds in under eight minutes! Along with all the onions, bell pepper, garlic, green onions and carrots we used in our first class to make stew. She wouldn’t let me help after because I was too fast and the others needed to learn. I still cannot use apeeler very well these days and only keep it around for for orange or lemon peel to make thin strips to slice/julienne.

I was in Honduras for the winter and a local friend made us dinner one night. She was peeling her vegetables with this GINORMOUS butcher knife & getting the tiniest peels I've ever seen. I definitely do not possess that skill

I use whatever I happen to have on hand. I don’t think we even have a peeler at the lake cabin. I usually don’t peel potatoes even if we’re mashing them. I’ll peel apples if I’m making a pie though.
