What I particularly love is that they jumped straight to “fired.” No warning, no reprimand - that worksheet was apparently such an egregious violation of policy that it wiped out four years of problem-free teaching. This stuns me. Except that white skinned people have always found white "flesh" coloured Band-Aids and it is only last year that J & J ( the makers of Band aid) have brought out band aids to match PoC's skin LINK Thanks for the link and saving me the search. I knew the expansion of bandaid colors to include a variety of skin tones was very recent.

Outright nonrenewal for teachers is pretty rare, TBH. It’s usually reserved for behavior that actively endangers kids, or else an ongoing and persistent violation of policy. I’m glad she got the reason for her termination in writing (one worksheet!), so they can’t come back later and try to say that she was fired for something else. I hope she has legal grounds to sue. Clearly, this firing is intended to send a chilling message to the teachers in the district and create a culture of fear. It’s reprehensible. I really worry for the teachers. And I really worry for the kids. The next generation of young people in many places is going to be very poorly equipped to navigate the world.

Honestly, this is ONE reason why I cannot stand FL. The narrow-mindedness of the majority of people down here is downright frightening to me. So, real, honest History is not permitted to be discussed or taught in schools now? Anything regarding being gay is also out. They're limiting topics and teachers in so many ways. Not only does FL (also) have the Covid shortage of teachers, but add on the other factors. Seems like DeSatan wants to turn the clock back to the 1950's or earlier, where people of color and women have no choices. It's disgusting. Also, not being able to teach about history (Hitler, Putin, etc), is leaving out a large portion of reality. These kids are not going to know what REALLY happened in recent history. You're telling me that there are no Jewish families in these States? No gay people in their families either? No knowledge of what's happening RIGHT NOW with Russia? It's messing kids up. This is what really chaps my hide. They want to control real life narratives: history, etc., but have a nervous breakdown because Twitter censors their lies and misinformation.

Granted I don’t shop for bandaids often and I never bought them online but I have never seen other colors except the usual flesh tone or kids.

I live in Missouri and I hate the politics! It’s such a red state and I’ll never agree with the BS here. I’ve lived in NC, SC and GA since I’ve left Canada and this is my least favorite state. DH doesn’t get why but all I can say is we have to vote in every election. I hate that the teacher got fired. There are so many red hat MAGA people here and it just sends my BP up. I feel ya! UGH Where I live, there are still huge Trump banners for 2020, and now I am seeing Trump 2024 which make me want to vomit. Also, lots of cars with Let's Go Brandon stickers, LGB flags etc. And let's not even talk about our governor. Blech. I no longer have kids in school, but I do care about what is happening. My 23 yo daughter is a new teacher, who has only been teaching for less than a year, in a low socioeconomic district, and she is already burned out and often says, "What else can I do with a teaching degree?" It's so sad. I recently started following a FB group that is called "__________ county parents." OMFG. The way some of their minds work and the things they post in this group are truly frightening.

However, this is what we can all look forward to when more of these types of people get on school boards in the next few years. Just like teaching, the good board members are leaving because of this BS and what we will be left with is right wing idiots.

We had 9 or 10 superintendents resign this spring from districts in North Texas. Way too many at once to be a coincidence. I’m sure they are tired of getting emails from nutjobs, having their jobs and lives threatened, etc. Some might like to do the right thing and back up teachers, but they have lives and families to worry about as well. We’ve seen what these people do - they call out threats to school board members about “we know where you live.” And everyone lives in fear. We are being held hostage by terrorists, and our jobs and even lives are threatened if we teach point of view as this teacher did, or if we acknowledge Josh’s two dads, or stop a kid from bullying a trans classmate (indicating it’s OK to be trans). All this is being fed by right-wing media and politicians who stoke fear to push their own agenda. When will these people wake up and see that they’re being played for fools.

Florida is now banning math books... On Friday, Florida Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran announced that the state had rejected the math textbooks under the state's Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) standards. *** The approved list followed a thorough review of submissions at the Department, which found 41 percent of the submitted textbooks were impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics – the most in Florida’s history. Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics," the department announced. "The highest number of books rejected were for grade levels K-5, where an alarming 71 percent were not appropriately aligned with Florida standards or included prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies. Despite rejecting 41 percent of materials submitted, every core mathematics course and grade is covered with at least one textbook," the department said. Corcoran has been pushing the moral panic over Critical Race Theory. In a December press release from Gov. Ron DeSantis, Corcoran claimed, "our classrooms, students and even teachers are under constant threat by Critical Race Theory advocates." DeSantis praised the banning of math textbooks. “I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law," DeSantis said after Corcoran found 21% of math textbooks "incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT." www.rawstory.com/desantis-critical-race-theory/#cxrecs_s

unbelievable. What is the conservatives problem with SEL? Have any of these people making decisions actually spent any time in a classroom? Nice of the education commissioner to do this just before leaving office. If they found this many math books unacceptable, how many social studies books are going to get axed (they're next on the list) www.wfla.com/news/politics/florida-doe-rejects-54-math-books-from-state-curriculum/TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Department of Education announced the rejection of just under half of the textbooks submitted for curriculum inclusion for the 2022-2023 school year.
It’ll be the first time the state’s new curriculum, the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking is used. The books rejected were for mathematics instruction.
The Florida BEST Standards were passed into law through Senate Bill 1048, moving the state to progress monitoring from more traditional standardized testing practices and opening up new curriculum requirements to be made.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 1048 on March 15 while in St. Petersburg.
During his final days in office, Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said the FDOE had rejected 54 of the 132 books submitted, 41% of them, over their alleged “indoctrination” and similarities to curriculum previously banned when Florida ended its use of Common Core standards. Of books submitted, 71% of books for grades K-5 were rejected, according to the FDOE.
Despite the large number of books rejected, the state said “every core mathematics course and grade” has at least one appropriate textbook to use in the coming school year. The announcement by FDOE said the K-5 books were rejected for not being “appropriately aligned” with Florida’s standards, as well as including prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies.
The announcement was titled “Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students.”
“We’re going to ensure that Florida has the highest-quality instructional materials aligned to our nationally-recognized standards,” Corcoran said. “Florida has become a national leader in education under the vision and leadership of Governor DeSantis. When it comes to education, other states continue to follow Florida’s lead as we continue to reinforce parents’ rights by focusing on providing their children with a world-class education without the fear of indoctrination or exposure to dangerous and divisive concepts in our classrooms.”
According to the department, here’s the breakdown of which proportion of books were rejected, by grade level or reason for rejection. A crossover of which age groups and which reasons for rejection was not provided.
78 of 132 total submitted textbooks are being included on the state’s adopted list. 28 (21 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT. 12 (9 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they do not properly align to B.E.S.T. Standards. 14 (11 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they do not properly align to B.E.S.T. Standards and incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT. Grades K-5: 71 percent of materials were rejected. Grades 6-8: 20 percent of materials were rejected. Grades 9-12: 35 percent of materials were rejected. In the announcement of the books being rejected, the FDOE said books were blocked that “included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics.”
According to the Committee for children, a global nonprofit, SEL is a “process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success.” The organization said SEL teaches problem-solving, self-discipline, and impulse control, among other topics.
While it hasn’t been signed into law yet, the rejection of these books on grounds of referencing CRT may be a telegraph of the governor signing House Bill 7, which bans CRT from state schools, colleges and universities. He is already expected to sign the bill, which has been referred to as the “Stop WOKE Act.”
“It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” Gov. DeSantis said. “I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law.”
A similar review process started for Social Studies textbooks on April 8. Publishers will have until May 13 to submit books for potential adoption into the new state curriculum.

We have a new superintendent this year and I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves because of the influence of the parent group in the district. We also had our HS principal quit during winter break.
I would love to know the examples of CRT that they "found" in the math books. Did a word problem mention that someone was a race or ethnicity other that white? How could CRT be taught in a math curriculum?
Last summer I posted the list of terms that they equate with CRT (which was very long) and yes, SEL was on that list.

Yeah, they send us their f'd up kids, complain that other people's f'd up kids are ruining the school, and then get mad if we try to help kids manage their emotions so we can get on with teaching 2+2. People are crazy.

Maybe the kids have to add up/count rainbow colored unicorns. Or maybe they have people of other races that they have to count in the books? GASP!

Not stopping to consider why bandaids were originally "flesh tone" in color is the issue of privilege. Hell, calling a color "flesh tone" as a color is even an issue...as if that pinky-beige is the only color out there. I am embarrassed to say that I had never thought about it until a few years ago. It never occurred to me that Bandaids were skin-tone. I just thought it was a color that somebody picked. 🤦♀️ I too have never realized that bandaids were supposed to be a skin tone. I just thought they were that color, pinkish. And I am Asian by the way. If I didn’t want them to be noticeable, I used clear ones.

Band aid discontinued them but then started making them again in 2020. Other companies made them during that gap. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make? www.band-aid.com/our-brand/our-toneAnd I don’t think the question about skin tone band aids is weird. I think the point of the questions is to try to help kids understand the countless ways that race impacts our lives, in ways that privileged white kids, in particular, may not have considered. The questions are intended for kids to see things from a different perspective, with questions that they can relate to.

I think that it’s a excellent question on the POV worksheet because it’s a very simple and relatable item that kids are familiar with. Making it useful in trying to understand a different perspective to their own. You’ve got to make it familiar to kids rather than too abstract or they won’t care.

I think the band-aid argument here is not nearly as important as the fact that a woman just lost her livelihood, and kids lost a good teacher, over a harmless worksheet. Because people are crazy. Let's stay focused.

Let's stay focused. You're right. Although it seems the voters in Texas and other states need to step up and pay attention to who they are voting for, because some of them will lose their jobs also.

I believe that list is from Peggy McIntosh's essay White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack. I tried to link it but the browser PDF wouldn't work. You can read it easily through Google search.
