Or whatever… ya know what I’m talking about? It’s not like normal conversation.
Somebody started it years ago, I guess. And now they all do it.
. I’m in a hotel watching tv with my mom. It’s been a while since I’ve watched network news.

So funny you posted this because just last night my husband said "I cannot stand the way these announcers talk!" LOLOL

There is a newscaster (msnewslady, I think) that records videos of her talking to her husband in her anchor voice all the time. It is really cute.

It’s not just the tv people, radio people do it too! There is this one lady on a local radio station that does the weather updates who drives me nuts.

So my 3rd graders are doing a program and the speaking parts are a fake news broadcast. I've been trying to teach them to speak with broadcaster voices. It's hard!

I have a friend that speaks very slowly and clearly enunciates every word. It's as if she's making a official pronouncement rather than just saying, "I'm going to get the cheese out." She'd make a perfect TV announcer.

KaylaMarieSully on instagram is a former news reporter who does hilarious parodies that often involve her young son. The Olive Garden tantrum is classic!

I have grandchildren just a little younger than your 3rd graders and honestly I don’t think they’ve ever heard a tv news broadcast, or radio news for that matter. They didn’t even have a tv until about a year ago and that is used mostly for sports or streaming movies. Their parents get all their news online and from podcasts.

They do hear sports announcers sometimes, depending on if their parents watch sports.

She'd make a perfect TV announcer. I had to break that habit when I finished grad school because it made me sound like a loon. There's something about voice majors - they all talk a certain way, very clearly enunciated with nice round vowels - and I definitely had picked up that speech pattern. Moving to Texas helped break it pretty quickly.

I don’t really notice when I watch the local news at home. They speak pretty much the way I hear in real life. I do notice when I travel the newscasters sound the same everywhere, they don’t have the local speech pattern. And I like the way local newscasters pronounce non-English words common in their area properly. For instance, in San Diego, newscasters usually pronounce Spanish words like native Spanish speaker. And in Hawaii, the same, Hawaiian words pronounced like native speaker.

Slight tangent but my MIL was a kinder teacher for several years (but nothing like a 30 yr career) and she constantly speaks like she is talking to a 5yo, over emphasizing syllables, drawing out words, high pitched voice, etc. Sha also sometimes just narrates what it happening to fill in space. She is totally capable of speaking normally as it does happen, but at 75+ yrs old I don't see it changing.

Also a tangent - I just watched the Seinfeld episode where Kramer answers the phone for the movie theater hotline. When that was first aired we would always use his voice while asking each other for information - “Wwwhy don’t you just TELL me which movie you’d like to see?”
I feel like this doesn’t translate well in writing 😆

Related, my husband is currently in the kitchen and talking on the phone to his broadcast partner. Which, as with his dad, means he's speaking with is on-air voice. I'm in my office, directly above the kitchen, and can hear every. damn. word.
sigh

We have a good friend who is the morning "drive guy" on a big city news station. I rarely hear him out of his broadcast voice - and I know it makes his wife insane. He's always "on."

Radio host, Delilah. I just can’t. I can’t. oh, I wanna reach thru the radio and slap her. Hard. There’s a TikTok bee 🐝 rescue lady who posts COOL video. But she WHISPERS her narration. It’s just silly. I’d get it if she was whispering while filming, but that’s not the case.

I agree with you, katlady, thankfully San Diego newscasters that I watch have normal announcing/reading voices. I know others love him, but I.cannot.listen.to.Keith.Morrison. The constant pause and questioning inflection drives me nuts.
