Was watching ATC and the chef was talking about folding the foil in a “business fold”. He then proceeded to fold the bottom third first and then the top third (c fold). This had me wondering whether I’ve been folding letters incorrectly as I use a Z fold. How do you fold letters? If you do a z fold, does your top panel face in or out?

I do it the way the chef did. Also, I know some people make the top layer a little longer than the bottom, but I make the top a little shorter than the bottom. So not even thirds.

I don't know if one is more correct than the other, but I do follow the "c fold" method.

"C" fold. Although some use the "Z" because they want the recipient address in the window of the envelope.
Also with the "C" fold. The first fold should be at the opening of the envelope with the top end on top. That is so the letter can be read immediately upon taking it out of the envelope!!

C fold with the top third just a bit longer than the rest so it can be unfolded easier.

C fold.
I don't have window envelopes, so no need to do it any other way.

C fold with the top third just a bit longer than the rest so it can be unfolded easier. This is what I do.
For a "friendly letter", I fold in two, with the bottom "half" a bit less than the top, then fold in three with one of the outside "thirds" being slightly wider than the other two. You can grab one corner, give it a flick, and the page opens up.

I use the Z fold but most of my letter folding is going into a windowed envelop. Using the Z means the printed address shows up in the window. I do it out of habit for the rest of my letter folding.

The z fold is for bills where the address needs to show through the window.
A business fold is the only acceptable way to fold a business letter.

C fold unless it's a window envelope, then it's a Z fold.

10th grade typing class - C fold with top fold a little shorter. Like her (and I like the first comment): youtu.be/V5gelIkXXLg

In thirds. It fits the envelope perfectly that way.

Just a slight hijack - Have you ever had to return an invoice or a signed letter and the envelope that is provided is just a hair too small for a business letter folded in thirds?? So annoying!

"C" fold. Although some use the "Z" because they want the recipient address in the window of the envelope. That's how I do it. At work I have to do the Z fold because we have an address window in the outer envelope. Anything I wind up mailing for myself is the C fold method.

Not that I fold many letters, I'd be lucky to send more than one every two or three years, but I did happen to send something last week. I did a C fold.

was taught in high school in Personal Typing class to do the c-fold. I took that same-titled class. Most useful class I ever took, bar none. I also remember that the first fold, from the bottom, went exactly under a line of text - maybe the salutation - which we had “returned” the typewriter carriage a prescribed number of times to type. It was all very precise.

Not a fair question since I worked in law offices since I was only 13. I ALWAYS do the business fold. It's all I know! Also, I'm so used to using a pen (the top of a pen) to flatten out the letter so that it's not too thick for the envelope + it's neater.
