Here is a cool video of Jennifer McGuire making rainbow backgrounds with diecut scraps. They are really pretty with white overlays cut with card sized cutting plates. Has anyone tried this?

Just watched her video, now I want that kite die 😉 Her cards were super cute! I went on a strips of paper jag a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully this will link to my IG where I posted a photo with a few of them. I also made my first shaker card (that was fun) using strips of paper. I’ll try and remember to take a photo of it tomorrow. http://instagram.com/p/CcyGg_iJilr

MichyM those cards are AMAZING!!! Love the different ways you cut and reassembled your strips. Great happy colours, too.

Oh, strip cards are some of my favorites to make, and yours are amazing! Curious which SSS video - I’ve missed so many the last few months, but maybe Laura Bassen, the rainbow queen? I meant to watch one so will go back. Did you first score the CS to make the neat lines on the edges of the strips in the cards with the short rectangular strip sections - like the bottom right one? That was clear as mud, right? 🙄
ETA Just watched the Laura vid. Heaven. Doing it - thank for your cards and the reminder.

MichyM I love your cards! You’re a beginner card maker? Nope! 👍🏼 I really liked the video Jennifer posted. The contrast between bold color and white overlay was awesome. What I really appreciated was her pointing out the difference cutting strips and using a die.

You are all so sweet, thank you! CardBoxer , I'm not 100% sure that I understand your question. Are you talking aboout the lines on the long side of the strips on the one on the upper left, and the two on the bottom? Those 3 cards' strips were cut with a die, and I actually am not thrilled at how pronounced the indent (line) from the die is on them. The one on the upper right and in the middle were cut with my paper trimmer. As far as the inspiration, I was very heavily inspired by SSS designers, and Laura Bassen sounds familiar. ETA: oh and the two different geometric backgrounds (top 3 cards) were made with embossing folders from the SSS .99cent sale a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty darned happy with that deal.

Laura Bassen is aka Laura Fadora and I re-found the video (thank you!) where she adhered strips to a CS rectangle, then cut the rectangle into 2x2” squares, then the squares into triangles and the triangles into eight smaller triangles. She was the first really well known cardmaker whose work I was taken by, not that I knew she was well known when I discovered her. Her background in graphic design and it shows.
And yes, those three cards. Each little strip looks like it has a debossed line across the top and bottom of it, right? I like the texture and interest it adds. That’s what you don’t like?! It got me thinking about texture and that it would be fun to make strip cards with some of the strips cut from embossed cardstock. Strip cards are a favorite and I’ve included patterned paper with regular cardstock, or cut up background fails.

Just a thought for those who love stripping. Some older shredders cut 1/4” strips. While I use a variety of sizes, 1/4” is common, alone or with other sizes. Someone at an LSS gave me that hint and then Jennifer McGuire showed it in an older video. The shredder I found just came with the top portion, no base, which was what I wanted. Found the video. Jennifer shows the shredder in the first couple minutes. www.jennifermcguireink.com/2017/04/rainbow.html

Ingrid Blackburn is an artist, card maker, scrapbooker (used to be?), mixed media pro and cool human. I took a virtual interactive, zany class that she, Justine Hovey and Laurel Beard taught. (The instructors and later some students were challenged to make a on line using several elements written on strips of paper pulled from a bowl in 10 minutes. Or was it five?) Ingrid has an 8-minute video about using scraps that she linked me to after I commented on a new video “short” of hers using scraps. I had missed the earlier one. She’s all about possibilities, and her videos/teaching help me loosen up my brain, since I get too into the “right” way to make cards, precisely following steps. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but it’s nice to break loose and not box oneself in. And the techniques in the video can be changed to suit anyone's style. youtu.be/ODXY6nIWQOw

I finally watched this video yesterday, very cool. I realized I liked a few specific things about the cards she made - I like the look of the die cut strips and the way they have that edge, different from trimmer cut strips, I liked the colors she was using, and I liked how bold the finished cards were with bright white die cuts. The white ink over the backgrounds was a cool effect, and the tone-on-tone sentiments in the background was an interesting idea. I'll have to check my stash and see if I have any plain (not stitched) rectangles to try this with. My first thought was that this might be the justification I need to buy one of the TE strip sentiment stamp and die sets, which I could use anyway. I think the Hero Arts mailbox die would be a fun foreground element, maybe paired with a frame. Besides that I'm not sure I have many dies with bold elements and frames that would look good with this type of background. Maybe a giant hello?

MichyM, those cards are great! I really like this idea and would love to see more ways to use solid colors. I've been wanting to buy a sampler pack of cardstock from The Stamp Market but want to be sure I will actually use it. This idea helps!

That was Crushing on Cardstock that I may have talked her into in a thread a while back It was one of the best classes I’ve taken. It was very inexpensive so I went in figuring if I got an idea or two, fine. But it was excellent. Of course it’s not live noe, so questions in the forum won’t be answered by instructors. It’s $18.00. www.onlinecardclasses.com/product/crushing-on-cardstock/

If looking at some of the cards made on Instagram, something to keep in mind is that specific stamps and dies weren’t required, so the point was learning the techniques or approaches. Of course there are links to buy what they use, so enabling happens. Speaking of cardstock, I’ve fallen in love with The Cardstock Warehouse. Great customer service, wonderful variety of colors and specialty cardstock. Tapping on some of the specific colors/types of cardstock also brings up thumbnails of example cards made with the cardstock. They carry both text and cover weight in some papers, so choosing the correct one in the drop down menu is important. And individual pieces can be purchased, as well as a swatch deck. I bought two pieces of a lot of types and colors initially, and then packs. www.cardstock-warehouse.com/ETA 8.5x11 samples ship free. Of course you’re paying more per sheet, but when wanting to check out color or finish, for me it’s been well worth it. Or when wanting only a few sheets in a color since it’s not one used very often. www.cardstock-warehouse.com/collections/samples

This has been a great thread. I'm super psyched to try these techniques this weekend.
MichyM, like everyone else said, your cards look awesome.
Thanks for the link, CardBoxer, I'm going to check it out now.

I have multiple packages of their cardstock and NONE of them are a true 8.5 x 11 - they are ALL cut crooked! I have to trim off a sliver of each side to guarantee I’m working with a properly straight piece of paper. It’s maddening.

I’ve never had that happen to theirs though have with a couple other companies, and have different types of their CS. Did you contact them? Curious which CS you ordered so I can double check mine if I have it too. With CS that’s been off from other companies it was’t hard to square up, maybe partly because my main trimmer is a big Carl cutter, and can cut multiples.
