Do you call trimming with a string trimmer…weed-whacking, weed eating, or something else?
I enjoy learning the different names and phrases that are used for common things in different regions. I was reading the how much do you pay for lawn services thread and saw everyone mention weed eating. I would have used weed-whacking. What do you use?
sorry my question is worded strangely in the poll and I can’t edit it…but hopefully you know what I mean. 😉😄
ETA - I added string trimmer, that may help to clarify my question. 🤞😄

I call it weed whacking... I've watched a few youtube videos- from an Australian landscaper, I think- where they called it a whipper-snipper, which I think is really cute!

I had to look up what you meant but with that machine I call it strimming, with a strimmer. If I'm pulling them out by hand it's just weeding.

I had to look up what a weed whacker is, and in the UK, it tends to be known by its original brand name, a strimmer. So I would call the task strimming.

It’s weed whacking here. And it only very rarely happens at our house because DH hates doing it. He changed the contour of our landscaping so there are no places the lawnmower can’t hit. Now on the flip side at our hunting property, you could easily spend 2-3 HOURS just weed whacking because there are so many areas where the grass can grow tall and you can’t get to it with a mower. It sucks.

Weed whacking in Ontario. Not me, of course I'm allergic. When DH does it, I close all the doors.

It probably would have been easier for you to understand what I meant if I had a well thought out and grammatically correct post instead of the garble that I posted. I will admit to being a bad multitasker. Thanks for responding anyway. 👍😄

Here in the US there are a lot of companies that make string trimmers... the brand of trimmer we own is a Husqvarna, so if we did that, we would have to call it 'Husqvarna-ing' lol. That's too much of a mouthful to say!

Good grief! You know where my mind went, yes, straight to the lady garden! 😆. Just goes to show it depends on if you are writing or reading. I have the worst gutter mind when it comes to reading threads and posts and that did not even cross my mind. I hope that isn’t a sure sign that I really am getting old, as that is half the fun. 😉😄

We weed-eat using the weed-whacker. I never considered this one. So the machine is not called a weed eater? ETA- I have so much to learn. We use the weed-whacker to weed-whack. 😄

That's too much of a mouthful to say! The name has come to mean the activity There are plenty of others around but and if you google strimmer you'll be shown lots of brands. "A Strimmer is a power tools that uses a nylon line which rotates very fast to cut and trim grass. The term “Strimmer” is actually a brand name created by Black & Decker to describe Grass or Line Trimmers." Another point is that they're not just for weeds, more for lawn edges, grass around the base of trees etc. so that's maybe partly why we don't call it something relating only to weeds?

I dunno why my mind goes directly to calling it a weed whacker when that's not all we use it for. language is messy, isn't it? lol.

A Weed eater is used to do any weed-eating. I don't do it though, just tell the gardener if an area needs more/less attention!

We use a weed-whacker to edge the lawn. I don’t think I personally have ever used it to actually whack weeds. Lol! And I’ve seen gardeners use it to trim bushes.

We are weed whackers who use a weed whacker to do the job. Ds21 calls it the "get back machine" because he heard Dh say that to him so many times. 😆
