Just curious. A breeze caught my door this morning. I left a note because I wanted to be a good example for my kids. I know I didn't want to, though. What do you generally do? I know I'll be more careful in the future.

It has never happened to me yet. Maybe because I always park way in the back where there are less cars or even no cars.
If it happened, I hope I would do the right thing and leave a note.

What do you say in the note? Are you leaving your personal information? Just saying sorry?

As far as I know I’ve never dinged a car. A long time ago I actually scraped a car while parking and I left a note with my phone number.

I’ve never done this. I am always really careful about opening my door - as much to protect my door as others. We always taught our kids to be careful as well. I am pretty careful about parking though- I don’t park in really tight spaces if at all possible. I’m more likely to drive farther out and park with less cars around.

I too park no where close to other cars. I’ve never dinged another car that I’m aware of. Certainly, not now. I definitely get my steps in before I even get to the store.

I’ve never been in this situation, but I would leave a note with my contact information.
ETA: Our cars are a big investment, so we take care of (and take care with) them. A door ding would be a big deal.

I said no because I don't think I've ever done it. I tend to park away from other vehicles though. If I thought I had done damage that would tick me off had I been the owner, I would leave my info.

With a tiny door ding, no I would not leave a note. If the door was caved it, yeah I’d probably leave a note.
Do door dings suck, yes but honestly, that’s just part of parking in public. Let me preface this by saying I’ve been on the receiving end of many door dings over the years.
Also, most door ding marks rub off with a mr clean pad. Don’t come at me with those are bad. They’ve NEVER ruined my paint.

Never happened to me but if I did, yes, I would.
I grew up with a dad who insisted we be extremely careful opening doors and have a husband the same way. The only time I have trouble with high winds. Thankfully it hasn't caused any problems for me yet.
I did have a guy once park right next to me at Target and open his door (not at all windy) and SLAMMED his door into my car as I was still sitting in it. He looked at me, shrugged an apology and walked off. I got out and looked ready to go after him but miraculously, no dent/scratches. I was still pissed that someone would do that and then just shrug it off and walk away.

I would suggest also taking a picture of the dent/ding.

I would never notice if someone dinged my car unless it was a really massive indent, my car is our camping and off road vehicle so it has suffered much worse than a little ding!
I have never hit another car but I’ve certainly backed into and side swiped a couple parking garage poles in my day. But if I did ding someone’s car I would leave a note.

They’ve NEVER ruined my paint. This is pretty much my feeling. I try hard not to touch the other cars and teach the kid the same lesson, but sometimes it happens. It’s always been a minor tap and I walk away with a clear conscience. I guess if I ever did real damage, I’d leave a note. My car (15yo) has many door dings, but I think some of them are from my own family, so I can’t really complain.

My car just began to get dings on the driver's side. I know it's happening here in my parking lot. I park carefully, get out of the car & make sure I left enough room on both sides for other cars, yet there are more dings daily. Grr. This hasn't happened in the past few years that we've had the car. Not sure what's dinging it or why. The car to the left of me is always far enough away NOT to ding my car.
I usually park far away from other cars when I'm food shopping, etc., so my car door never dinged other cars. I'd feel terrible if it did.

I dinged another car pretty badly once. I did not leave a note, but waited until the owner came to his car since it was in a shopping center. A man with a boy about 10 came out. I apologized and offered to pay. He was so nice and pointed out several other dings and told me not to worry about it. Then he thanked me for being honest and not driving off. I think It was a good situation for his young boy to see 😊

I don't think I've ever dinged anyone's door. The person who put a very noticeable ding in my car about a month after I got my new car did not leave a note. I pretend it's not there, but it's there.

I was sitting in my car waiting for a mom, baby and boy about 5 to get into their car when the boy opened the door to jump into the seat and his door hit my car door. He was over exuberant (maybe just being a typical boy that age). It made a dent in my door. When he was in his car I got out and looked at it. It was repair worthy. I said something to the mom and she shrugged her shoulders and said, “So, what do you want me to do about it?” I commented that I wanted her insurance information so I could get it repaired. She said, “Oh get over it! Kids will be kids.” She jumped into her car and drove off. I had the presence of mind to take a picture of her plate and a picture of the damage. I contacted my insurance company. Because my car wasn’t moving and because it was clear that her car was involved (green paint on my white car) my insurance agent took care of everything. They contacted her and got her insurance information and she ended up paying for it. I would have appreciated it if she would have been more aware and offered her information in the first place.
. I voted other. I would stay there to talk to the person if it was bad enough. However, that said, I am very careful where I park and who I park next to (not a beater type car). It drives my DD crazy.

If I caused damage to another person's property of course I'd leave contact info. Now if there was no damage then of course not. Thankfully I've not been in this situation as I tend to park far away as I've seen the crazy people do.😊 twinks I'm so glad you were able to resolve your situation. That lady sounds like a real piece of work.

I can't back out of a parking space well, and our parking lots in our area are so tight. So I have to park far from the store where I can easily pull through and park (and pull out). So I hardly ever park next to a car. But my old van didn't have a good hinge so I always had to hold the door to open it.

I would leave a note because my current vehicle is sporting a huge dent in the door compliments of some loser who parked next to me when I was volunteering at DD’s elementary school one day. I know it was a red car and it was parked in the handicapped spot next to me because I saw it parked there when I went in and no one was parked next to me when I left. DH took it to his buddy at the repair shop and the cost to get it fixed was over $1800. So yeah, I was pretty pissed that the jerk who did it didn’t leave a note.
In a somewhat related story, I had parked in a parking ramp downtown one day and as I was walking in I witnessed a lady hit another vehicle parked next to her as she was leaving the space. She knew she hit something because she got out and looked at the damage to her bumper and the other person’s car, kind of shrugged, then got back in her car and drove away! Well, while she was getting back in her car, I was busy taking a cell phone photo of her, her vehicle and license plate along with a photo of the damage to the other person’s car.
After she left, *I* left the person she hit a note with MY phone number, so they could call me to get the info I had on who had hit their car. Sure enough, the guy called me and had me forward the cell phone photos I took to his insurance agent along with my report of what I saw, so I hope they were able to track her down and be made whole. People can really be jerks sometimes if they think they can get away with it.

I am pretty careful about where and how I park. I won’t park in a spot that’s too narrow, even if it means a much longer walk. If I pull into a spot crookedly, I back out and center my car.
I’ve only left door dings twice, both when trying to get into my car, and I did not leave a note either time. If an asshole parks so close to the line that I cannot open my door wide enough to get into my car without hitting the other vehicle, then they deserve a door ding and I’m not going to leave my info. I’m not going to wait for who knows how long for them to return and move their car, either.

So far, knock on wood, it hasn’t happened to me. I try not to park in tight spots and I am very careful about opening my door. Now, I do have little dings on my car. Annoying to find them.
One time, someone in a near empty parking lot, still managed to back out of a space and hit my bumper. I was pissed because the car was only a few months old. I purposely parked on the level that was almost empty. But judging by the damage on my bumper, I am sure they had damage too, good!

All parking lots should be like Costco (or at least our Costco) there isn't just lines, it's a line, curves over creates a space then up to a second line, another curve at the other end.
I always park further away to avoid getting squeezed in. I don't think it's a big problem here. Everyone has big and new vechiles and just parks far enough apart. Lines are barely visble anywhere and many vechiles hardly fit in them. Lots of space in parking lots.

We have the problem of parking spaces being as narrow as legally possible so they can get more cars in the lot. Especially an issue in older areas and small business complexes. Sometime my smallish car barely fits between the lines. And we have lots of big vehicles on the road too (F150’s, vans, etc).

Lines are barely visble anywhere and many vechiles hardly fit in them. Lots of space in parking lots. I freaking LOVE Costco’s parking lots! The spaces are nice and big and as you said, there’s a cushion of space between them. Back in the day, I used to make a few loops around the lot to find a spot close to the doors. But once I had my kid I realized I was doing it all wrong. The best spots are the ones right next to the cart rack even if they’re a little further from the door for a couple reasons. One, there’s only the possibility of one car parking next to me that could bang into my door; and two, I’m right next to the rack so I can unload my car, put the cart away in the rack (fulfilling the Pea Promise LOL) and I can jump right back in my car and go. And for the parents of little kids, 3: you can grab a cart from the rack to put your kid (and car seat carrier for little babies) in without having to lug them into the store first. Now that I’ve been enlightened, I always opt for the spot next to the cart rack.
