My son has an internship in the Boston area and I’m trying to help him find housing. It’s a 10 week program, so he’s looking for something to accommodate just that length of time. I’ve looked on Airbnb, but everything is so expensive. It’s a paid internship (thankfully), but I don’t want EVERYTHING to go to housing/food, ya know?
So, any ideas on where we can look? Would it be worth it to contact realtors in the area? We’re in south Mississippi, so we’re having to do everything online.

Your best best is a sublet from one of the gazillion university students, on a job or internship elsewhere for the summer. If you have any connections to get access to summer sublet postings from some of the universities, that is your best bet.

Sublet from a student.

I think "sublet" from a student is the best idea. But if that doesn't work, rent is "cheaper" in southern NH and he could take the commuter bus into the city. Is the internship right in the city?

Thanks, y’all. How do we search for sublets? Is there a website that would list them?
I’m not sure exactly where the lab is that he’ll be working, but I know it’s not on the campus of the college the internship is through.

My daughter's school had a program for summer students to connect for subletting. Start with the college? Boston is a GREAT place to spend a summer -- I hope he really enjoys it.

In our area Facebook marketplace is a popular place to look for house rentals. A LOT of subletting is talked about on the Facebook parent page of my DSs college. Or perhaps an extended stay hotel?

It really depends on where the internship is (in the city, North Shore, South Shore, Metrowest, etc.). Boston is expensive; the air BNBs you are seeing are normal pricing for around these parts. Rentals are hard to come by right now, and are getting more and more expensive even up into Southern NH. I agree a sublet would be your best bet, or just renting a room in a house where you can access the MBTA/T (assuming the internship location is near a stop). It is a great place to be in the summer time though! I would see if the university his internship is connected with has any resources and go from there. Good luck!

Thanks again, everyone. So, I found out that he’ll be working at the Weld Hill Research Bldg of the Arnold Arboretum. On Centre St, not far from VFW Pkwy. Do, would it be best to look in the Roslindale or Forest Hills areas or would a different area be better? He will not have his car with him, so he’ll be relying on public transportation.
The internship is through Harvard University and he was given some information a while back with options. He’s out of the application window to see about a room on one of the local college campuses (Harvard did not offer this as an option on their campus) and was basically told Airbnb or the classified ads.

My son went through the same thing when he interned for a summer tech position in California a few years ago. The best he could do was one of those extended stay hotels. Just try to get one of the chains in a better area. He ended up paying about 3K per month but he didn't have to worry about buying/renting furniture, etc. They gave him a discount for paying a month at a time rather than a week.

From the map I would suggest Jamaica Plain, if he can find a place there, which is a neighborhood I like; I don’t know exactly where his work site is, but it looks like he could take the subway from JP to the general area you describe.

Some apartments will rent month to month, but you will need to figure out furniture. Or at least a bed. The Facebook parent pages from my kids universities are full of people looking for subleases because another student dropped out or won’t be at the school over the summer. Maybe try those pages?
$3,000 a month is what we payed when we lived in Weston, so I’d say that’s about normal for anything around Harvard. We’ve lived in 14 cities around the world and Boston was the second most expensive (the most expensive was Seoul). Everything is expensive there.

So I grew up in that area. The good thing is public transportation is ok. I’d look at West Roxbury (where I grew up). You could also look in Dedham, Roslindale, Hyde Park (where my DH was from). They’re all on public transportation. I think you’re going to find JP very expensive if he can find anything…I feel like everything is expensive right now. There are tons of colleges in the area, I’d try those FB groups to see if anyone is subletting for the summer. I know this is not going to be popular but you could call the 2 churches in WR to see if they are aware of anyone subletting or renting a room for the summer. The only reason I’m suggesting that is because WR always had young adults over from Ireland in the summer to work summer jobs (I met so many cool people over the summer in my town). Did some Googling: www.apartments.com/west-roxbury-ma/studios/

We ended up going the realtor route when my brother was there. Rentals are hard to find and are expensive.

So, I did join a sublet Facebook group, and have gotten a few replies to my post. One was well within his budget, but when DH looked at the crime rates, it was a no go.
I have someone that messaged me about a place in Roslindale, which is less than 2 miles from where he’ll be working. I’m waiting on details about it.
Thank you so much for the help. This is so stressful for me since I know nothing about the area.

Familiar with that area. I think it's in a fairly newly built building as well. It's no where near Harvard even though it's part of Harvard. I agree with the peas above. I'd look in West Roxbury first, then maybe Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Hyde Park but be careful of certain areas there. You could even look into certain areas of Brookline and Chestnut Hill. It's very close to Faulkner Hospital too for another reference point. I guess some colleges around there to look into would be Boston College and Hellenic Greek College, then Harvard Medical School, Emmanuel College, Simmons University and Northeastern a bit further into town.

Try this website Furnished Finder. It’s for traveling nurses and professionals but if he passes the background check it might be an idea. I have a friend that rents her seasonal home using this site.

Thank you. I’m checking them out now. I had a place booked, but now I’m thinking it’s a scam. I’m sick over it right now, as we paid a deposit, plus first month’s rent by direct deposit. 😢
